The Story of a Lost Village
In the mountains of Chongqing lies a place called Xiaozhai Tiankeng, but before it became a world-famous sinkhole, there was a village called Xiaozhai that no longer exists.
Xiaozhai was once a peaceful farming village. The villagers lived simple lives, growing crops on the mountain slopes. They had their own school, shops, and a small clinic. Children played on the paths between the traditional wooden houses.
In 1990, scientists discovered that the area had special geological features. The government decided to turn the area into a national park to protect the unique landscape. The villagers were asked to move to new towns.
At first, many villagers refused to leave. They had lived there for generations. Their ancestors were buried in the nearby hills. After several years of discussion, the villagers finally agreed to move. The government built new houses for them in a nearby town.
The old village was gradually dismantled. Today, the area is part of the Fengjie Tiankong Geopark, and millions of tourists visit every year.

The Changing Face of Transportation in China
Over the past thirty years, transportation in China has changed more than at any other time in history. These changes have greatly affected how people live and work.
In the 1990s, most people travelled by bus or bicycle. Long-distance travel meant crowded trains that took many hours. The journey from Beijing to Shanghai, for example, took about 20 hours by train.
Today, China has the world’s largest high-speed railway network, covering over 45,000 kilometres. The same journey from Beijing to Shanghai now takes only about four and a half hours. By 2026, China plans to add another 2,000 kilometres of high-speed rail lines, connecting more cities than ever before.
Public transportation within cities has also improved dramatically. In 2000, only three cities in China had subway systems. By 2025, more than 50 cities had subways. The total length of urban rail transit lines reached over 10,000 kilometres.
These changes have made life much more convenient. However, they have also brought new challenges. Traffic jams in big cities are worse than ever. The government is now promoting electric vehicles and public transit to address these problems.
How long did the train journey from Beijing to Shanghai take in the 1990s
A. About 4.5 hours B. About 12 hours
C. About 20 hours D. About 30 hours
How many cities in China had subways by 2025

C. All Chinese people now own cars.
D. Subways are the most popular form of transportation.

How AI Is Changing Our Lives Today
Over the past few years, artificial intelligence (AI) has moved from science fiction into our daily lives. AI is no longer something we will see in the future—it is already here, and the changes are happening faster than ever before.
In 2024, a new generation of AI tools changed how people work and learn. Students can now use AI to help with homework, but teachers remind them to use it wisely. The most important lesson is that AI is a tool, not a replacement for human thinking.
In hospitals, AI systems now help doctors read X-rays and MRI scans more accurately. A 2025 study showed that AI could detect certain cancers earlier than human doctors. This means patients can receive treatment sooner.
Self-driving cars used to be a dream. But in several Chinese cities, self-driving taxis have been tested on public roads since 2024. They are not yet perfect, but they are improving quickly. Experts believe that within five years, self-driving cars will become common in many cities.
Of course, AI also brings new challenges. Some people worry that AI might take away jobs. Others worry about privacy and safety. The key is to learn new skills and work together with AI, not against it.
What did a 2025 study show about AI in hospitals
A. AI can replace all doctors.
B. AI can detect certain cancers earlier than human doctors.
C. AI cannot read X-rays accurately.
D. AI is too expensive to use in hospitals.
What does the writer say about self-driving cars
A. They will never be safe. B. They have been in use since 2020.
C. They are improving quickly. D. They are already perfect.
What is one worry people have about AI
A. AI might take away jobs. B. AI will make life more difficult.
C. AI will stop working. D. AI will become too expensive.
What is the writer’s advice about AI
A. To stop using AI completely. B. To wait until AI is perfect.
C. To only let scientists use AI. D. To learn new skills and work with AI.
D
China’s New Energy Revolution
Over the past decade, China has transformed from a follower in clean energy to a global leader. This change has been so rapid that experts call it a “green revolution”.
In 2010, China had very few electric vehicles on its roads. By 2024, more than 20 million electric cars were driving across the country. In 2025, China sold over 10 million electric vehicles—more than the rest of the world combined.
Solar power has also grown dramatically. In 2010, solar energy provided less than 1% of China’s electricity. By 2025, this number had jumped to 15%. The world’s largest solar farm, located in the desert of Qinghai Province, covers an area of over 50 square kilometres.
These changes did not happen overnight. The government introduced policies to encourage clean energy. They offered subsidies to people who bought electric cars. They closed thousands of highly polluting factories.
The results have been remarkable. Air quality in major cities has improved significantly. The carbon emissions from China’s power sector have started to fall since 2024.
However, challenges remain. Battery disposal is becoming a new environmental problem. The government is now investing in battery recycling technology. By 2026, China plans to build over 10,000 battery recycling stations across the country.
