(2025·全国二卷,阅读D篇)Does your soul die a little
every time you throw away unused food? Mine does.Maybe
that feeling comes from growing up in South Africa, where the
phrase “there are children starving in Africa” was more of an uncomfortable reminder of fact than a prayer at dinner time.
Food waste is a growing concern in the restaurant, supermarket, and supply chain industries. From technological solutions to educational campaigns, food producers and sellers are looking for ways to use more
of what we’re already growing. But last month, one popular New York City restaurant tried a different way:It changed its menu to exclusively (专门) offer food that would otherwise be thrown away.
For two weeks in March, Greenwich Village’s Blue Hill restaurant was renamed wastED, and served items like fried skate cartilage, a juice pulp burger, and a dumpster diver’s vegetable salad. Each dish was tailor-made to raise awareness regarding food waste.
A study by the Food Waste Alliance determined that the average restaurant generates 33 pounds of food waste for every $1,000 in revenue
(收入), and of that waste only 15.7% is donated or recycled.Up to 84.3% is simply thrown out.Restaurants like Silo in the UK have experimented with zero-waste systems, but wastED took the concept to its logical conclusion.
It should be noted that none of the items on wastED’s menu was technically made from garbage.Instead, all the ingredients (配料) used were examples of meat cuts and produce that most restaurants would never consider serving.Things like kale ribs, fish collars, rejected sweet potatoes, and cucumber butts were all re-appropriated and, with the help of a number of good chefs, turned into excellent cuisine.
Though wastED received enthusiastic reviews, it was designed from the start as a short-lived experiment; Blue Hill has since returned to its regular menu.Nevertheless, it serves as a reminder that there are many ways to address problems of sustainability, and that you can make an amazing meal out of almost anything.

33. Why did Blue Hill carry out the experiment?
A. To customize dishes for guests.
B. To make the public aware of food waste.
C. To test a food processing method.
D. To improve the UK’s zero-waste systems.
解析:细节理解题。根据第三段第二句可知,Blue Hill进行这项实验的目的是提高人们关于食物浪费的意识。

34. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. Why the ingredients were used.
B. Which dishes were best liked.
C. What the dishes were made of.

A
(2026·合肥二十校开年考)A can of soft drink and two large eggs may have a similar number of calories, but the eggs will provide us with protein, vitamins and other nutrients, and satisfy our hunger, while a fizzy drink provides little more than calories. The important concept here is nutrient density (密度), which refers to the number of nutrients we take in for each calorie consumed. No one would suggest replacing sweet drinks with eggs, but what can we do to increase nutrient density in our diets?
“Have you had your five a day?” on British supermarket shelves is a reminder to customers to ensure they are eating at least five slices of fruits and vegetables per day, promoting a healthy diet. Many countries have launched similar campaigns to encourage people to eat more healthily.Fresh, natural produce is usually very dense in nutrients.Eating a wide range of fruits and vegetables is important, so some advice focuses on including different colors of food in our diets.“Eating a rainbow” could be one way to get more nutrients.
Other advice recommends that we should be more adventurous in what we eat.Cooking food that we haven’t eaten before can lead us to use ingredients that we don’t usually consume. This can give us a wider range of nutrients. It’s not just about fruit and vegetables.Even flavorings such as garlic, ginger or turmeric can have antioxidant and anti- inflammatory properties, while also leading people to use less salt.Dairy products such as milk and cheese are high in calcium, while in limited amounts, meat can be a good source of protein.
If you’re not feeling that adventurous, then swapping food items can be beneficial.Choosing wholegrain bread or rice instead of white
bread or rice can increase fibre intake.Unsalted nuts provide more nutrients than snacks such as crisps.Possibly surprisingly, popcorn is a wholegrain snack that is high in fibre.
So, fresh fruit and vegetables, swapping the worst things, and just a little bit more adventure could be the secret to a more nutritious diet.

(2026·江苏泰州一模)Indoor food growing operations are seeing both successes and failures in the United States. Some companies in the food industry are investing (投资) even as competitors fail.
California-based Plenty Unlimited this summer began working on $300 million indoor plants, while Kroger announced that it would be increasing its availability of vertically (垂直地) farmed produce.Meanwhile, two indoor farming companies that got strong
backing — New Jersey’s AeroFarms and Kentucky’s AppHarvest — filed for financial failure and reorganization. And a five-year-old company in Detroit, Planted Detroit, shut its doors this summer.
The industry changes do not worry Jacob Portillo, a grower with Eden Green Technology, an indoor farming company.“The fact that other people are failing and other people are succeeding is going to happen in any industry you go to,” he said.
Indoor farming refers to growing crops indoors, which experts sometimes call “controlled environment agriculture”.There are different
methods. One method called vertical farming involves putting produce
from floor to ceiling, often under artificial lights and with the plants growing in nutrient-enriched water.Other growers are trying very large greenhouses, indoor beds of soil in big buildings and using special robots for parts of the farming process.
Supporters say growing indoors uses less water and land and permits food to be grown closer to consumers, saving on transport.Indoor growing is also a way to protect crops from increasingly extreme weather caused by climate change.
But critics question the sustainability of operations that can require a lot of energy for artificial lights. And they say paying for that light can make profitability impossible.Curt Covington of AgAmerica Lending, a private investment company centered on agriculture, is not convinced that indoor farming operations can work — except in special cases.Given the high cost of indoor operations, Covington said, “It’s just hard to be very profitable.”

(2026·“皖南八校”大联考)Growing up with a mother who introduced swedes (芜菁甘蓝) to Indian cuisine, Hill-Maini developed an early appreciation for the transformative power of cooking. His culinary (烹饪的) adventures took him to New York City, where, at just 18, he was redesigning menus for Manhattan restaurants. But the call of science beckoned (召唤), leading him through biochemistry at Harvard and eventually to UC Berkeley, where he now combines his passions for cooking and research.
The star of Hill-Maini’s research is N. intermedia, the fungus (真菌) responsible for oncom — a traditional Indonesian food made from soy pulp leftovers. What makes this fungus extraordinary is its ability to turn indigestible plant waste into nutritious, flavorful food in just 36 hours.
But Hill-Maini and his team didn’t stop at soy pulp. They tested N. intermedia on about 30 different agricultural waste products. The results were astonishing — the fungus thrived on almost all of these agricultural waste products, proving its significant role in food recycling.
The science behind this fungal magic is fascinating.N. intermedia belongs to a group called filamentous fungi, which produce enzymes (酶) that break down complex plant materials that human digestive systems struggle with.In doing so, they not only make the waste edible but also increase its protein content and improve its flavor.
One of the most exciting discoveries was the existence of two distinct types of N. intermedia: wild types found globally and types that have adapted specifically to human generated agricultural waste. This suggests a fascinating co-evolution between the fungus and human food production practices.
However, would people actually accept it? To answer this, Hill- Maini worked with Rasmus Munk, head chef of the Michelin two-star restaurant Alchemist in Copenhagen. They presented red oncom to 60 people who had never encountered it before.“We found that, basically, people who had never tried this food before made positive comments about it,” Hill-Maini said.“The results were pretty good.”

(2026·湖北新八校协作体模拟)The historic city of Suzhou is crossed with canals.Old whitewashed buildings line the banks.A century ago some of these would have been Chaguan, or traditional teahouses, where locals gathered to discuss the news or conduct business.13. There are dozens of Starbucks outlets in Suzhou, as well as other coffee sellers.Last year China surpassed America, becoming the country with the most branded coffee shops in the world.
The early history of coffee in China is unclear. It is reported that it was Danes who opened the first coffee shop in the country in the 1830s.14. That was partly because the Qing Dynasty looked down upon foreigners and sought to prevent their influence.A century later, Lu Xun, a celebrated author, wrote that he didn’t drink the stuff, “I always thought it was for the Westerners.” He and most other Chinese people preferred tea.
  15. After China introduced market reforms and opened up to the world in the 1980s, foreign firms such as Maxwell House and Nestle brought instant coffee to the country. They catered to local tastes, making their mixes sweeter and less bitter than what they sold elsewhere. The biggest coffee-drinking group was still white-collar workers in first-tier cities aged between 20 and 40.16.
Today, a wider range of the population is partaking thanks to the rise of domestic coffee chains selling affordable coffee. The leader is Luckin Coffee, with over 20,000 outlets.17. A cup of basic Luckin coffee is about a third of the price of an equivalent Starbucks offering.Luckin’s sales in China exceeded Starbucks’ for the first time in 2023.Both chains are expanding into smaller cities.
A. Starbucks, by comparison, has 7,300 shops.
B. China is home to nearly 50,000 such outlets.
C. Unfortunately, the drink didn’t catch on then.
D. It was totally a different story fifty years later.
E. Holding a Starbucks cup became a status symbol for them.
F. This marked the beginning of a new era for coffee in China.
G. Today visitors are more likely to find shops serving a different kind of drink.
