Discovering China's Living Treasures
What comes to mind when you think of China's treasures?Perhaps the Great Wall or ancient paintings? But some of China's most valuable treasures cannot be locked in a museum. They live in the hands, voices, and daily lives of ordinary people.(1)______ In China, there are over 100,000 items of intangible cultural heritage, ranging from folk music and dance to traditional festivals and craftsmanship.
One of the most well-known Chinese ICH items is paper-cutting.(2)______ During festivals like the Spring Festival, people paste red paper-cuts on windows and doors, hoping to bring good luck and happiness to the family. The art dates back to the 6th century.(3)______ For example,Shandong-style paper-cut is famous for its bold and large patterns, while Sichuan-style features delicate and tiny details. In 2009,Chinese paper-cut was added to UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.Today, young people are learning this traditional craft in schools and workshops, keeping the art alive.
Another fascinating ICH item is shadow puppetry.Dating back to the Western Han Dynasty over 2,000 years ago,it is one of the oldest forms of theater using light and shadow.Puppets, usually made from animal leather, are held behind a white screen while a bright light shines on them.(4)______ A troupe(戏班) usually includes a puppeteer, several musicians, and a singer who performs all the voices in the story. The plays pass on historical stories, local customs, and social beliefs from generation to generation. In 2011,Chinese shadow puppetry was inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
Some ICH items turn everyday materials into something magical.Take wheat straw painting(麦秆画)as an example. After being carefully selected, steamed, ironed, cut, and pasted, the golden wheat straws—once ordinary leftovers from the harvest—become beautiful artworks showing flowers, birds, and landscapes.(5)______ "We want more young people to know about it,"said an inheritor of the craft."It's our duty to pass it on."
Every piece of intangible cultural heritage carries a unique story of Chinese wisdom and beauty.Let's protect them together—they are the living treasures that connect our past with the future.
A.This ancient folk art uses simple scissors and paper to create beautiful patterns of flowers, animals, and lucky symbols.

Experts at the University of Edinburgh studied the relationship between music and remembering a foreign language. They found that remembering words in singing was the best way to remember even one of the most difficult languages.
The experts got the result by doing an experiment. They invited 60 people and divided them into three groups of 20.Then they asked the three groups of people to study words from the Hungarian(匈牙利的) language. Why Hungarian, you ask?The experts said they chose Hungarian because not many people knew the language.
All three groups studied the Hungarian language for 15 minutes. The scientists asked them to learn in three different ways. They asked the first group to simply speak the words. They let the second group speak the words to a rhythm(节奏).And they asked the third group to sing the words. Then the three groups of people joined in a few language tests to see what they remembered. The group of people who learned the Hungarian words by singing them did better than the others. They did the best in four out of five of the tests. They also did two times better than those who simply learned the words by speaking them.
Dr Katie Overy was one of the experts who did the experiment. She thought the findings could help those who try to learn foreign languages."The brain seems to like music, especially for remembering,"she said.

Businesses also use special moments.A café might play soft music and serve warm cookies on cold days to make customers feel welcome.A bookstore could hold story time for kids every weekend, turning a visit into a happy memory. An ice-cream shop lets customers decorate their own cones—seeing a child smile while adding something is a moment everyone remembers.
