The Grand Canal: A Hidden Wonder
When people think of amazing Chinese landmarks, they often think of the Great Wall. But did you know that China is also home to the world‘s longest man-made waterway It is called the Grand Canal.
The Grand Canal runs for about 1,800 kilometres from Beijing in the north to Hangzhou in the south. That’s longer than the distance between London and Moscow. It was built over 2,500 years ago, making it one of the oldest canals in the world.
Why was the canal built In ancient times, the north and south of China were very different. The south was rich in rice, while the north needed food. The canal was built to transport grain and other goods from the south to the north. It also helped connect different parts of the country, making trade and communication easier.
Today, the Grand Canal is still used for transportation, though not as much as in the past. Many sections have become popular tourist attractions. Visitors can take boat tours and see ancient bridges and traditional buildings along the way.
In 2014, the Grand Canal was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. However, some parts of the canal are in poor condition because of pollution and lack of maintenance. The government is now working to protect and restore this hidden wonder.

Pandas Return to the Wild
For decades, China has been working hard to save giant pandas from extinction. Thanks to these efforts, the number of wild pandas has increased from about 1,100 in the 1980s to over 1,800 today. In 2016, the giant panda was removed from the “endangered” list. But the work is not over.
Since 2024, China has been releasing captive-bred pandas into the wild as part of a new programme. In March 2025, a female panda named Huahua was released into a nature reserve in Sichuan Province. Scientists attached a GPS tracker to her to monitor her movements.
“The first few months are the most dangerous,” said Dr. Li, a panda expert. “Captive-bred pandas need to learn how to find food, avoid predators, and survive in the wild.”
Huahua’s progress has been encouraging. By April 2025, she had travelled over 50 kilometres from her release site. She has learned to find bamboo and build simple shelters. Scientists believe that if she survives another year, she will be fully adapted to the wild.
China plans to release more pandas in the coming years. The goal is to establish several self-sustaining wild populations by 2030. However, the biggest challenge remains: protecting their natural habitats from human activities. Without enough forests, even the most successful release programme will fail.
34. How many wild pandas were there in China in the 1980s
A. About 1,100 B. About 1,800 C. About 2,000 D. About 2,500
35. When was Huahua released into the wild
A. In 2016 B. In 2023 C. In 2024 D. In 2025
36. What did scientists attach to Huahua before releasing her
A. A camera B. A GPS tracker C. A microphone D. A food supply
37. What is the biggest challenge for panda protection according to the passage
A. Lack of bamboo B. Too many pandas C. Habitat loss D. Climate change

China’s National Parks
In 2021, China officially established its first five national parks. These parks cover a total area of about 230,000 square kilometres—roughly the size of the United Kingdom. They are home to nearly 30% of the country‘s key wildlife species.
Sanjiangyuan National Park is located on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. It is the source of three great rivers: the Yangtze, the Yellow, and the Lancang. The park protects the headwaters of these rivers, which provide water for millions of people.
Giant Panda National Park spans three provinces—Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu. It connects 67 separate panda reserves, creating a protected area of over 22,000 square kilometres. About 80% of the world’s wild pandas live here.
Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park is home to China‘s last wild Siberian tigers and Amur leopards. There are only about 50 Siberian tigers and 60 Amur leopards left in the wild in China. Both species are critically endangered.
Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park protects the unique ecosystem of Hainan Island. It is home to the Hainan gibbon, one of the world’s rarest primates, with only about 35 individuals remaining.
Wuyishan National Park is known for its rich biodiversity and cultural heritage. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site for both natural and cultural reasons.
By 2026, China plans to add several more national parks, including one to protect the wetlands of the Yellow River Delta.
