Although I’m not a music major, I brought my beloved violin to the United States during this study abroad semester. This violin could not be kept apart from my life.
When I was six years old, I was one of the typical kids who started to learn musical instruments. Parents would hear their young kids shouting, “Mom! I want to learn the piano! Dad! I want to learn the violin!” Well, the difference is, for me, that it was not my free will. Yes, my mom just forced me to play the violin. In the violin school, you could hear the kids crying in the practice room after being scolded (责骂) by their moms. I was one of them. At the time, I hated the violin. However, I started to love the violin when my mom stopped focusing on my relationship with the violin in high school, because her attention naturally changed to my school performance. Maybe she didn’t have enough energy to force me to practice anymore.
When I finally got into college, the first thing I did was to register for the campus orchestra. I didn’t want to stop playing the violin. The orchestra helped me get involved in such a harmonious, friendly group for the first time while I was playing an instrument. It was my first time meeting friends who have similar hobbies, passion and dreams. I can’t forget my first classical concert. I was feeling true love toward the orchestra and the violin. I was extremely excited and I couldn’t wait for the next concert. The time just passed as a blink. Two hours felt like 10 minutes.
For everyone, it’s never too late to learn to play an instrument. It is really one of the best ways to express one’s emotions and communicate it to other people, and I have grown my emotions while being a part of an orchestra.
4. What can we know about the author’s mother when he was six
A. She loved playing the violin. B. She suffered from a serious illness.
C. She cared about the author’s grades. D. She forced the author to learn the violin.
5. When did the author begin to love the violin

C. After graduating from college. D. After going to the United States.
6. What did the author do first when he entered college

C. He signed up for the campus orchestra. D. He met friends with similar hobbies.
7. What does the author think of his first classical concert
A. Impressive. B. Beneficial. C. Ordinary. D. Inspiring.

Sports can help you keep fit and get in touch with nature. However, whether you are in the mountains, in the waves, or on the grassland, you should be aware that the sport of your choice might have a great influence on the environment.
Some sports are resource-hungry (资源消耗大的). Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water. Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses (高尔夫球场) in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of some countries, golf is often held responsible for a serious water shortage.
There are many environmentally friendly sports. Power walking is one of them that you could take up today. You don’t need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don’t have to worry about resources and your wallet. Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit. If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones. Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.
Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environmentally friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled (回收的) materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms”. They are better replacements for traditional health clubs and modern sports centres. Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it’s free.
8. Which of the following is the author most probably in favour of
A. Cycling around a lake. B. Motor racing in the desert.
C. Playing basketball in a gym. D. Swimming in a sports centre.
9. What can we learn about golf
A. It is popular in the dry regions.
B. It causes a water shortage around the world.
C. It pollutes the Earth with chemicals and wastes.
D. It needs water and power to keep its courses green.
10. Why does the author use power walking as an example
A. Because it is an outdoor sport.
B. Because it improves our health.
C. Because it uses fewer resources.
D. Because it is recommended by experts.
11. In which part of the magazine can this passage be found
A. Education. B. Environment. C. Art. D. History.
D
The ocean is the largest natural sink of carbon dioxide (CO2), taking in about a quarter of our annual emissions (排放). That uptake of CO2 makes the ocean’s surface more acidic (酸的), which harms ecosystems like coral reefs But until now, researchers did not know the extent to which acidification was reaching deeper waters.
Jens Daniel Müller at the Federal Institute of Technology Zurich in Switzerland and his coworkers developed a 3D model to study how CO2 moves through the ocean. They used this model to show how CO2 the oceans have taken in since 1800, around the start of the industrial revolution, has affected deep-water acidity.
They found a clear acidification signal down to 1,000 metres in most of the ocean. Some areas, such as the North Atlantic — where the powerful ocean carries carbon from the surface to deeper waters — saw acidification down to 1,500 metres. Some pockets of deeper water that are naturally more acidic saw even more acidification than the surface, which limits their ability to take in more CO2.
“This is more or less what researchers expected would happen as the ocean takes up more CO2,” says Müller. “But it’s a different thing to really see the data coming in to confirm this.”
Notably, about half of all the acidification since 1800 occurred after 1994, as our emissions of CO2 have risen sharply. “We see this rather rapid progression,” says Müller.
The level of acidification is so high that it threatens sea life in many parts of the ocean, For example, sea butterflies are at particular risk because their shells dissolve (溶解) in acidic water. The rise in acidification has also doubled the areas where cold-water corals will have trouble surviving.
“And ocean acidification is set to continue as the water takes in more CO2. Even if we were able to stop CO2 emissions immediately, we would still see a process of ocean acidification for a couple of centuries or so.” says Müller.
12. Why did Müller’s team design the 3D model
A. To protect ecosystems in Switzerland. B. To research CO2 movement in the ocean.
C. To measure the health of ocean life. D. To track movements in ocean currents.
13. What have rising CO2 emissions brought about since 1994 according to the text
A. A sharp increase in ocean acidification. B. A significant rise in the level of the ocean.
C. A rapid progress in sea life preservation. D. A stronger ability of oceans to take in CO2.
14. What is Müller’s attitude to the future of ocean acidification
A. Approving. B. Indifferent. C. Doubtful. D. Concerned.
15. What is the text mainly about
A. The history of ocean acidification since 1800. B. Advances in deep sea exploration technology.
C. CO2 emissions are speeding up climate change. D. Ocean acidification is reaching deeper waters.

Eddie lived in a friendly town filled with music. Sharing the same passion for music, Eddie formed a band, The Stars, with his childhood friends Luis and Ruben.
One day, they received a letter inviting them to a local music festival a month away. Excited, they decided to practise separately every day and then together once a week. But deep down, Eddie worried about their show because of Ruben, the guitarist. Although Ruben was a quick learner, he didn’t like to practise on his own at home. As a result, he often made a lot of mistakes due to lack of practice. This was a big problem for the band.
One week later, as scheduled, they gathered at the drummer Luis’s house for group practice. But they had only played a few lines when Ruben started making mistakes. “Sorry. I ... I just ...” Ruben tried to make an excuse.
“You just haven’t been practising again. You are always like this! We need to practise more; we are running out of time.” Luis’s face turned red with anger. Ruben also shouted back. Both boys stood locking eyes, full of tension. Eddie broke up the argument and calmed them down. He turned to Ruben, asking why he didn’t play at home. “I don’t like to play music on my own,” Ruben confessed (坦白). “My guitar sounds lonely by itself. You know I have trouble focusing on things.”
That night, Eddie’s father asked how band practice was going. Letting out a frustrated sigh, Eddie told him what had happened, saying they were considering replacing Ruben. His dad listened quietly, and then offered a simple suggestion, “Instead of practising the same song alone, why not figure out what helps Ruben focus ” Not wanting to lose Ruben as a band member or as a friend, Eddie began to think about it.

Suddenly an idea struck Eddie. He decided to create a “music buddy” playlist for Ruben. It included songs they loved and some relaxing background music. Eddie and Luis also started practising with Ruben via video calls, making it feel like a group session. Ruben became more focused, and his skills improved rapidly.
The day of the music festival finally arrived. The Stars took the stage. Ruben played flawlessly, and the audience was enthralled. Their performance was a huge success. Afterward, Ruben thanked Eddie and Luis for their support. The band realized that understanding and helping each other was the key to their success, and they continued to create beautiful music together.
