For two decades, Jack Wilmore worked at his family’s supermarket in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California, filling his life with the daily routine of stacking shelves with goods. He seemed never to give a second thought to the academic world he had left behind — until a family trip changed everything.
When touring mainland universities with his teenage daughters, Jack stepped into the lecture halls. Suddenly, surrounded by books and the atmosphere of learning, he felt himself at home. It was a feeling of coming home to a place he had never lived in.
This feeling brought back a hidden regret. Years ago, Jack had intended to get a biology degree, but family duty called. He gave up his dreams to save the family business — a sawmill he successfully turned into the town’s first supermarket. Yet, despite his success, a difficult question kept coming back to him: “What is my true role in life ”
The answer struck him a year later, triggered by a memory from his youth. Back in school, Jack was the person everyone turned to with their troubles. He was such a good listener that a local radio host once told him, “You listen like a young psychologist.” Trusting his instinct, Jack applied to study psychology at UC Santa Cruz. At the age of 45, he was accepted.
“I had to get used to being much older than all the other students,” he says. “In fact, I was older than my professor. But I believe disadvantages can always be advantages. And I ended up helping the others because I’d had more life experience that carries psychological impact, which could reflect classroom theory.
Jack came top of his year and impressed his tutors so much that he was offered a job researching and teaching, which he still does while studying for a master’s in neuropsychology. Now 53, and still in the job, he adds, “My only regret is not having done it earlier.”
4. What was Jack’s reaction when stepping into the lecture halls
A. He felt regretful for giving up his biology degree years ago.
B. He felt he truly had returned to his hometown at long last.
C. He felt a sense of belonging in the academic atmosphere.
D. He felt nervous about being much older than other students.
5. Why did Jack give up his dream of getting a biology degree years ago

B. Because his family couldn’t afford it.
C. Because he found biology too difficult to study.
D. Because he wanted to study psychology instead.
6. What inspired Jack to apply to the university at 45
A. His desire for a better career. B. The radio announcer’s comment.
C. His classmates’ encouragement. D. The advice of the family members.
7. Which of the following can best describe Jack
A. Frustrated and hesitant. B. Ambitious and adventurous.
C. Caring and humorous. D. Determined and responsible.

Have you ever seen an animal video online that made you stop and wonder Videos showing a wolf taking care of a rabbit, or a lion walking calmly through a small town are now spreading widely. This is possible because of AI technology. However, scientists warn such popular videos may hurt real wildlife protection and spread wrong ideas about nature.
A study in Conservation Biology points out that AI-generated animal videos create an untrue world, leading to wrong ideas about animal behavior and widening the gap between people and nature. Co-author José Guerrero-Casado stresses the danger of false (虚假的) information. For example, videos showing birds killing “bad” snakes might make people less willing to protect snakes, and create false ideas about animals that are already in danger.
The effect on children is especially worrying. These videos can give them wrong ideas about how people and animals really get along. When children discover that real-world animals do not act as they do in these made-up videos, it can have the opposite result, finally making them feel less connected to nature. This risk grows as young people increasingly turn to social media for information.
So, how can one recognize these videos Experts suggest looking for a few signs: unnatural animal movements that appear too smooth or seem impossible in real life; light and shadows that do not look quite right; and small details like fur or feathers that appear unclear or repeat in an unusual way.
To deal with these risks, the research team suggests putting more effort into education, like teaching media literacy (素养) in schools. As another co-author Francisco Sánchez says, the goal is to make sure “children learn early that there are no lions living here.” While they think this is important, the researchers also say that school lessons alone cannot stop the spread of false information made by AI. This leads to an important question about who else in society needs to help solve this problem, if school education is not enough.
8. How does the author introduce the topic in paragraph 1
A. By defining a concept. B. By making a comparison.
C. By giving examples. D. By quoting an expert.
9. What effect do AI-generated animal videos have
A. They make children no longer love animals.
B. They make teenagers live in an untrue world.
C. They shift people’s focus onto species in danger.
D. They mislead the public over the facts about nature.
10. According to paragraph 4, which is most probably an AI-generated video
A. A lion with continuous jumps. B. A deer with natural shadows.
C. A dog with unusual marks. D. A butterfly with colourful wings.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Wildlife protection: a widening gap. B. AI: a nature changer.
C. AI-generated videos: a big success. D. False animal videos: real threats.
D
Scientists have long explored to turn the mechanical energy of raindrops into electricity. However, traditional droplet (液滴) generators have problems like being heavy, expensive, and hard to make in large sizes. A team from Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics has created a new floating droplet electricity generator. It uses water in its structure, making it lighter, cheaper and more eco-friendly.
Unlike most existing generators that use solid platforms and metal electrode (电极), the new device floats on water. Water here works both as a support and a conductive electrode. This special design cuts the device’s weight by about 80% and its cost by nearly half, while it still produces as much electricity as traditional systems.
When a raindrop hits the floating layer of the generator, the water below takes in the impact and helps the drop spread out. At the same time, ions (离子) in the water carry electric charges. Together, these things let the generator make about 250 volts of electricity from one raindrop. The generator also has smart drainage holes. These holes use water’s surface tension to remove extra water without letting it flow back, so the generator works stably. It can also work well in different temperatures and salt levels, even in natural lake water. Its special structure makes it strong enough for bad environments.
Another advantage of this new technology is its capacity for large-scale production. Researchers built a 0.3-square-meter model, which is much bigger than earlier ones. It can power 50 LED s at the same time and charge small batteries in minutes. This means it could be used to power small electronic devices and sensors on lakes or near the sea, without taking up any land.
Professor Wanlin Guo, who led the study, said this “nature-integrated” design is a big step for cheap and light hydropower systems. These systems can work with solar and wind power. Besides making electricity, the technology can also help monitor water environments, like powering sensors that check water quality. Of course, there are still challenges. For example, raindrops fall unevenly, and the generator’s long-term outdoor use needs more testing. But this floating generator is still an important progress for practical hydropower use.
12. What is one advantage of the floating generator over traditional ones
A. High-quality material. B. Cost-effective design.
C. Easy-carrying size. D. Improved power production.
13. What does the underlined word “drainage” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Taking in water like a sponge. B. Keeping water inside.
C. Allowing water to flow away. D. Cleaning water by removing impurities.
14. What does the author want to explain by mentioning the 0.3-square-meter model
A. The generator’s powerful capacity.
B. Its larger size of traditional versions.
C. Its excellent performance in bad environments.
D. The generator’s flexibility in outdoor operations.
15. What is the author’s attitude toward the new generator
A. Doubtful. B. Unconcerned. C. Critical. D. Optimistic.

Strength training is having a moment. Planet Fitness, one of America’s biggest gym chains, is cutting back on treadmills (跑步机) in favor of power cages. ____16____ Gym trends come and go, but this one feels different.
In 2010 the World Health Organization added a recommendation of two sessions of muscle-strengthening exercise a week to its exercise guidelines. ____17____. Japan, for example, updated its advice in 2024.
There’s no doubt cardio such as jogging is good for you. It lowers blood pressure and cuts the risk of heart disease, strokes and some kinds of cancer. Strength exercise offers many of the same benefits. And it also helps regulate metabolism (新陈代谢), keep blood sugar steady, and maintain healthy fat levels. ____18____
Much of the medical interest in strength exercise, though, comes from its ability to prevent, or treat, sarcopenia (肌肉减少症). This is the decline in strength and muscle size that accompanies ageing. ____19____ That process gathers pace in a person’s 60s and 70s. Lack of muscle increases the risk of falls, a big killer of the elderly.
With the world ageing rapidly, sarcopenia is only going to become a bigger problem. Though some degree of physical decline is unavoidable with age, evidence suggests that, even for people in their 80s, a bit of pumping iron can work wonders. As so often in medicine, it is better to prevent a disease from taking hold in the first place than to try to cure it afterwards. ____20____
A. Strength training is calling.
B. It may even help treat depression.
C. Many governments have followed suit.
D. The body’s muscles naturally begin to reduce in one’s 30s.
E. Sarcopenia also makes it harder to recover from injuries and illness.
F. This shift is part of a growing global trend toward strength training.
G. Unfortunately, few older adults are aware of the benefits of regular strength training.

The year her parents decided to break up, Alice began spending a lot of time at the Polka Cafe. It was the only place she could really think, and her mother didn’t seem to mind that she passed much of the summer there.
Two important things had happened before summer began. The first, of course, was that her father had moved out of their house, and the second was that Sarah was no longer her best friend. Alice couldn’t be sure how things had gotten so bad. They had gotten in a fight at school shortly after her parents announced they would no longer be together.
When her friends noticed her dad stopped dropping her off at school each morning, Alice always explained, “My dad is away on business.” She didn’t invite them over to play anymore, either. She made a lot of excuses not to hang out with anyone else. “I have other plans,” she told Sarah.
One day, while they were walking home from school, Sarah said to Alice in a rather annoyed tone, “Alice, what’s going on Why won’t you talk to me ”
Alice pretended she hadn’t heard Sarah, and continued to walk. She didn’t want to talk to Sarah about this right now. She didn’t want to talk to anyone about this.
“I’m serious, Alice. My mom told me what’s going on,” Sarah said. “I know about your parents.” This stopped Alice in her tracks. It was true they lived in a small town, and secrets didn’t stay secrets for long. But Alice had hoped it would not get out or at least stay hidden long enough for her to figure out how to bring it up. She was embarrassed and hurt. She wanted to tell Sarah when she wanted to.
Alice exploded in anger. “How dare you claim to know anything!” she shouted. “You’re a terrible friend. I never want to speak to you again!”

【答案】Reading Habits of High School Students
Nowadays, the topic of senior high students’ after-class reading habits is under hot discussion. I’d like to share my own habits.
I prefer printed books to digital reading, which does less harm to my eyes. I stick to reading for 30 minutes before bed every day, and usually spend a whole afternoon reading on weekends, focusing on literary works and popular science.
After-class reading brings me great benefits. It not only broadens my horizons beyond textbook knowledge, but also relieves my study pressure and improves my thinking ability. Good reading habits benefit us lifelong, so why not develop your own after-class reading habit
【答案】
Now it was August, and Alice sat in the Polka Café, lost in thought. The smell of freshly baked bread and the warmth of the café were comforting, but her mind was filled with regret. She missed Sarah. As she stirred her tea absentmindedly, Sarah’s words from that day echoed in her mind. Alice realized Sarah wasn’t trying to hurt her; she was just concerned. With a deep sigh, Alice decided it was time to mend things. The next day, summoning all her courage, Alice called Sarah and asked to meet. To her relief, Sarah agreed.
“I’m sorry too for having shouted at you,” said Alice. Sitting under their old oak tree, Alice confessed everything. She spoke about her parents’ divorce, her feelings of shame, and how she had pushed Sarah away unintentionally. Tears welled up in Sarah’s eyes. “I only wanted to be there for you,” Sarah said softly. They hugged, and Alice felt a weight lift off her chest. That day, they promised to always be honest with each other. For the first time all summer, Alice felt a glimmer of hope and the comfort of true friendship.
