My mother and I were staying in a town near Pompeii (庞贝). The earth shook those days. That night, I was sleeping when the ground shook very hard. My mother rushed into my room to wake me up. We had to stay outside for the night. My mother was so scared. She didn’t shut her eyes for even one second. By six o’clock the next morning, many buildings were still shaking. We decided to leave the town.
The road was crowded. We were at a place out of town. Just then, shocking things happened. Our bus couldn’t go straight ahead. It began to move from side to side. The sea moved back suddenly, and many sea animals were left on the sand.
We noticed a very dark cloud over Mount Vesuvius (维苏威火山). Soon, the cloud moved down and covered the sea. My mother asked me to continue without her, but I refused to leave her behind. We moved on while the cloud was spreading over the land like a flood. It turned day into night. The air was thick with smoke and ash (灰烬,火山灰) began to fall in heavy showers (大量落下). All around us, women were calling, children were crying and men were shouting. People were trying to find their families in the dark.
Thankfully, after a while, the daylight returned! Everything was covered in ash, like the snow in winter. After a night of living between hope and fear, we had no thoughts of things to come.

③ Hailstorms are very dangerous. They can cause lots of damage (破坏) to people, buildings, cars, plants and animals. In fact, hailstorms can even cause deaths. For example, a hailstorm killed more than 1,000 English soldiers in 1360. So we should know how to stay safe during it.
④ One way to protect yourself from a hailstorm is to have your tools prepared throughout the year, and one of them must be helmets. They can help you save your head from both the hail itself and other things brought by the heavy storm. You should also make a plan for your family so that you all know where to go for safety.
⑤ What’s more, make sure you stay inside until the hail stops and stay away from windows. If possible, find a room at least one level down from the top of the house. Finally, if you get caught outside in a hailstorm and can’t find a house to stay in, find something to protect your head. Remember: stay out of lowland areas, because they could be filled with water. And don’t forget to avoid trees.

第四部分 读写综合 (共两节,满分25分)
第一节 任务性阅读(共5题;每小题2分;满分10分)阅读下面的短文,根据短文内容回答问题或翻译句子。
Floods (洪水) often happen after or during heavy rain. Too much water can cause damage (损害) to homes and roads and can even wash cars away. More importantly, floods can be very dangerous to people’s lives as well.
If a flood happens suddenly without getting prepared, people may have no way to run. The weather report helps people prepare for heavy rain and floods. People try to protect their things by putting sandbags in front of their doors to stop water from coming into their homes. Floods are more likely to come to lower places, so people living in lower areas or near rivers are more likely to be in danger. If the heavy rain is reported early, the people in these areas will be saved before the floods arrive.
Some scientists say that because of global warming (全球变暖), more places may have heavy rain and floods. Because it’s difficult to stop the floods, scientists spend time on ways of finding them earlier so that people can run away quickly.
Floods can happen quickly in many parts of the world. We need to prepare earlier and act quickly before they begin. Stay away from water and get to higher ground during the floods. Finally, go back home carefully. There could be something dangerous in the dirty water that washes into your home. Clean your home as soon as possible after the flood is gone.
