The Benefits of Reading
Reading is more than just a way to pass the time. Scientists have found that reading offers many benefits for our minds and bodies.
First, reading can improve brain function. A 2024 study from the University of Cambridge showed that people who read regularly have better memory and concentration. The study followed over 2,000 adults for five years. Those who read at least one hour per day had a 30% lower risk of memory loss in old age.
Second, reading reduces stress. Researchers at the University of Sussex found that reading for just six minutes can reduce stress levels by up to 68%. This works even better than listening to music or taking a walk.
Third, reading helps develop empathy. When we read stories, we enter the minds of the characters. We experience their joys and sorrows. This helps us better understand the feelings of real people in our lives.
Fourth, reading improves sleep. Many experts recommend reading a book rather than looking at a phone screen before bed. The blue light from phones can disrupt sleep, while reading a physical book helps the mind relax.
With all these benefits, it‘s no wonder that reading is called the best exercise for the brain.
A 2024 study found that reading one hour per day can reduce the risk of memory loss.
Reading for six minutes can reduce stress by 48%.
Reading helps develop empathy because we enter the minds of characters.

In 2024, a small library in Morocco celebrated a remarkable achievement. The Al-Qarawiyyin Library, located in the city of Fez, has been in continuous operation for over 1,200 years. It is recognized by UNESCO as the oldest working library in the world.
The library was founded in 859 AD by a woman named Fatima al-Fihri. At that time, very few women received an education. But Fatima was different. She used her inheritance to build a university and a library. The university became one of the most important learning centres in the Islamic world.
For centuries, the library housed thousands of rare manuscripts. Many of these were hand-copied by scholars. The collection includes a 9th-century copy of the Quran and the earliest known written records of the travels of Ibn Battuta.
In 2020, the library completed a major renovation. The project took four years and cost over $10 million. Today, the library has modern facilities, including a special laboratory for preserving old manuscripts. However, the building still keeps its traditional Moroccan style.
In 2025, the library was visited by over 500,000 tourists. This was a record number. The library now offers online access to some of its manuscripts. Anyone with an internet connection can view these treasures from anywhere in the world.

Reading Online vs. Reading Paper Books
With the rise of e-books and tablets, more people are reading digitally. In 2025, a survey found that 55% of Chinese readers preferred reading on screens, while 45% still chose paper books. But which is better The answer may depend on what you are reading and why.
Speed and convenience
Digital reading offers unmatched convenience. You can carry thousands of books on a single device. You can adjust font sizes and brightness. You can look up words instantly. For travel or daily commuting, e-books are hard to beat.
Paper books, however, offer a different kind of experience. Many readers say they remember information better when reading on paper. A 2024 study from the University of Valencia found that readers of paper books scored 10% higher on comprehension tests than e-book readers.
Eye strain and sleep
Staring at a screen for hours can cause eye strain. The blue light from screens can also disrupt sleep. Reading a paper book before bed is generally better for sleep quality.
The emotional connection
There is something special about holding a physical book. The smell of the paper, the feel of the pages, the sight of a full bookshelf — these things create an emotional connection that screens cannot match.
The future
Most experts agree that both formats will continue to exist. Some books, like novels and picture books, may always be better on paper. Others, like reference books and travel guides, work very well digitally. The best approach may be to use both, choosing the format that fits your needs at the moment.

My Favourite Book
My favourite book is The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. It tells the story of a young prince who travels from planet to planet and learns about life and love.
I love this book for two reasons. First, it teaches me that the most important things in life are invisible. What truly matters is what we feel in our hearts. Second, the drawings are simple but beautiful. They make the story even more touching.
This book has changed the way I see the world. I hope everyone can read it.
