Golden apples hanging on the backyard tree finally made me understand my father’s silent love. But three years ago, when I was a 13-year-old boy, I thought adults knew nothing about life.
That warm spring day, Dad came home holding a small apple sapling (树苗). “Let’s plant it together,” he said. I shook my head. “Why waste time The store sells apples ready to eat!” But he smiled, quietly opened the roots.
For weeks, I complained (抱怨) as we watered the weak tree. “It’ll never grow!” I said angrily when the strong summer storms nearly made it fall over. Father simply saved it with bamboo sticks, saying, “Good things take time, just like building a strong house.” At that time, I didn’t get what he meant.
Our final exams were at the end of the term. Since I failed math, I tore (撕) my test paper angrily. “I’m done!” Father found me sitting next to our knee-high tree. Instead of giving long speeches, he pointed at its new leaves. “Do you remember when it almost didn’t make it through the storm Now it’s standing tall, all because it refused to give up!”
I realized it all of a sudden. I began to study just as the tree grew, slowly yet surely. My father quietly cheered me on. During late-night studying, he’d put energy drinks beside my books. Even without saying anything, his strong hand on my shoulder said it all.

A girl tells about her time spent with a boogie board in Mexico.
Not long ago, my family traveled to Cancun, Mexico. It’s a city famous for its beaches and water sports. There, my parents bought me a boogie board for 550 pesos (about 195 yuan). I made up my mind to make the most of it.
Every day, I brought it to the beach to ride the waves. I also used it in the pool, floating on it like a pool toy. But of course, after all the fun we had together, it was time to leave. I thought it would be easy, but it was not. I wrote the words “Used Boogie Board:200 pesos” on a piece of paper and stuck it on my board. I held it up and walked through the hotel, but no one showed any interest.
My mom wanted me to give it away for free, but I believed I could sell it. I even lowered the price to 100 pesos. However, 15 minutes later, I was still holding onto my board.

In a quiet village lived a boy named Tom. His grandfather, who worked hard on their farm, often said, “Every part of nature has a purpose.” Tom listened, but he didn’t really understand.
One afternoon, they prepared soil for tomatoes. Tom saw dry leaves on the ground and started to throw them away. Grandpa stopped him. “These leaves are important,” he said. “When they break down, they become natural fertilizer (肥料) for the soil. They feed earthworms (蚯蚓) and make plants strong.” Grandpa showed Tom how to mix the leaves into the soil. Tom also learned to put waste into different groups—fruit peels were used to make fertilizer for the plants, and stones were collected to build small paths in the garden.
When the sun goes down, Grandpa pointed to a broken rainwater barrel (桶). “Years ago, villagers wasted water,” he said. “During a long dry period with no rain, the crops died because there was no water.” Now, they fixed the barrel to collect rainwater for washing tools and watering plants. Tom said, “We must save every drop!”
The next day, Tom noticed solar panels (太阳能板) on the roof. Grandpa explained, “Sunlight gives us free energy. It powers our lights and charges our phones.”
That night, Tom wrote in his diary, “True wealth isn’t about owning many things. It’s about caring for nature. What we give to the earth, it gives back to us.”
