When 15-year-old Li Ming joined his school's volunteer club last year, he expected to do usual tasks like cleaning parks or helping kids with homework. But a special project changed his idea of what volunteering could be. Together with 12 other ninth-graders, he started the“Memory Box” project to connect with elderly people living alone in his neighborhood. This project has not only made the elderly feel warm but also taught the teens valuable life lessons.
Many elderly people living alone in the community often feel lonely because their children work in other cities. They have lots of interesting life stories but few people to share them with. The teens first visited the elderly residents to chat with them. During the talks, they found that most of the seniors kept old photos, letters, or small items that carried precious memories—— such as a ticket from a 1980s film or a handkerchief made by a family member. However, these treasures were usually put away in drawers and forgotten.
The“Memory Box” project then took shape. The teens bought simple wooden boxes and decorated them with colorful paint and handwritten notes. They helped the elderly sort out their meaningful items and put them into the boxes. To make the memories more vivid, they also recorded the seniors’ stories about these items with their parents' permission. Some teens even learned to edit short audio clips and stored them in small players, which were placed in the boxes too. One 78-year-old grandma, Mrs Zhang, cried happily when she heard the recording of her talking about her wedding day.“I haven't thought about these things for years. This box is more precious than any expensive gift,” she said.
What made the project even more special was its spread. After local media reported it, several other middle schools in the city joined in. Now over 200 students are taking part, and more than 150 elderly people have received their own memory boxes. The teens also set up an online group to share tips on talking with the elderly and making the boxes. They found that listening patiently is just as important as the boxes themselves.
For the ninth-graders, the project was an eye-opener. Li Ming used to be a shy boy who avoided talking to strangers. But now he can easily start a conversation with elderly people.“I used to think volunteering was just doing something for others,” he said.“But it turns out that helping others also helps myself grow. These elderly people's stories teach me to cherish the present.” The school's volunteer club advisor, Ms. Wang, added that such activities let teens see the power of small acts of kindness.
