跨国守护“花儿”民歌
In summer, the land in Minxian County, Gansu Province, turns green. Villagers meet there for the
Hua’er folk(民间的) song festival. Among them is 69yearold Frank Kouwenhoven, a Dutch(荷兰的) music expert. He loves recording the singers’ voices.
Hua’er is a folk song tradition. People sing it in many local ways of speaking. It compares women
to flowers. Nine groups of people have loved it for hundreds of years. In 2009, it was listed as the
world intangible cultural heritage(世界非物质文化遗产).
Kouwenhoven has studied Hua’er for over 20 years.In the 1990s, he and his wife discovered Hua’er folk songs. They were amazed and began to visit Gansu and Qinghai. They talked with local singers, ate the delicious local foods, and even stayed at the singers’ homes. Sadly, his wife died in 2012 and he
stopped his work. But he returned to China in 2017. He wanted to finish their shared work to remember her.
Kouwenhoven says Hua’er is more than music. It has a long history and carries the dreams of the
land. To share this treasure, he has donated many items of Hua’er to universities. “I want the world to
hear these voices,” he smiles. “They are China’s gifts to us all.” He plans to do something to let the
world hear the beautiful music.

in different ways. Young people call each other by first names, but grownups use first names and
