Lungfish are one of the most amazing animals in the world. They are fish, but they
have lungs, just like humans. This means they can breathe air, not just water. There
are six species of lungfish, and they live in Africa, South America, and Australia.
One of the most interesting things about lungfish is how they survive in dry seasons.
When the water in their homes dries up, they bury themselves in the wet mud at the
bottom of the river or lake. They cover themselves in a slimy substance that keeps
them moist. Then they slow down their body functions and sleep for months, even
years, until the rain comes back.
Scientists study lungfish because they can tell us a lot about how animals evolved.
Long ago, some fish started to grow lungs and move onto land. These fish were the
ancestors of all land animals, including humans. Lungfish are like living fossils,
showing us what those early fish might have been like.
Lungfish are not the only amazing animals in nature. There are many other animals
with special abilities, like the earthworm that can regrow its body, or the anglerfish
that uses a light to catch food. Natural history museums are great places to learn about
these amazing creatures.
