At the Westonaria agricultural park in South Africa, farm workers are busy planting vegetables. But there’s silence around the park. That’s because most people here are deaf and communicate in sign language. They’re members of the Voiceout Deaf, farming project started by Matebogo Victoria.
Victoria has hearing problems herself, so she understands the challenges deaf people face. While studying at the university, she had to take classes with a hearing partner to help her understand and communicate with her teachers.
Victoria used to work for a bank. After she saw a lot of deaf people staying at home and unemployed (失业的), she hoped to do something to help. “Communication is the biggest challenge in the deaf community,” she said. “There are 44 schools for the deaf across South Africa. Many of the deaf either don’t finish school or don’t have enough money to travel far to go to one of the schools.” After careful consideration, Victoria left her job and started an agricultural business to help deaf people gain farming skills and get jobs matching their skills.
As part of Voiceout Deaf, farmers-in-training work on three different farms. Most of them use sign language, making communication easy. Although each farm is a learning environment, it’s also a workplace and a business. The farmers get paid for their work, and their produce sells very well.
Sibongile Maake is one of the farm workers. “I’m delighted with the work on the farm. I’m working slowly but surely, and I’m learning while making money. I can do things by myself. I am able to pay for things I need,” she said.

Volunteering is becoming more and more popular among middle school students these days. It is not only a way to help people in need, but also a good chance for teenagers to improve themselves and enrich their life experiences. As an eighth-grade student, I have taken part in many volunteer activities in my spare time.
Last Saturday, I joined a volunteer group to help clean up the city park. When we arrived in the morning, we found some rubbish everywhere. There were plastic bags, empty bottles and waste paper on the grass and along the roads. We divided ourselves into small groups. Some picked up the rubbish with tools, some swept the paths, and others reminded visitors to protect the environment. At first, some visitors looked at us in surprise, but soon many of them began to follow our example and stopped throwing rubbish casually.
After three hours’ hard work, the whole park became clean and tidy. The fresh air and green trees made people feel comfortable. Although we felt a little tired, we were full of joy and pride. We knew our small effort could make our city more beautiful.
Besides cleaning parks, I also go to the old people’s home once a month. I chat with the lonely old people, help them wash clothes and tell them interesting stories. Most of the old people there live alone and they really need care and company. Every time we leave, they always thank us with warm smiles.
Volunteering teaches me a lot. It makes me learn to care about others instead of only thinking of myself. It also improves my communication skills and makes me more outgoing. I believe volunteering is a meaningful thing. I will keep on doing volunteer work and call on more classmates to join us to pass on warmth and kindness to our society.

Volunteering at our school’s book corner is a great experience. It not only helps keep the corner tidy but also lets us share the joy of reading with others.
First, we need to sort the books every Monday morning. Some students put books back in the wrong places after reading. 41 This makes it easier for everyone to find their favorite books quickly.
Then, we help younger students choose suitable books. Little kids often don’t know which books are good for them. 42 For example, we may suggest storybooks with beautiful pictures for first-graders.
Sometimes, we hold small reading activities. Last month, we organized a“story-sharing hour”. 43 Many students joined and said they had fun listening to others talk about their favorite stories.
Volunteering here also teaches us important skills. We learn to work with our teammates. 44 When we face problems, like too many books to sort, we help each other finish the work faster.
45 It makes us feel happy to see others enjoy the book corner because of our help. If you have free time, why not join us as a volunteer
A.We talk to them and know their interests first.
B.Working together makes the job much easier.
C.We put them back in the correct shelves based on their categories (类别).
D.Everyone brought a book they loved and shared its story.
E.The book corner is a popular place for students during break time.
F.Most importantly, volunteering here brings us a lot of happiness.

广州将举办马拉松赛并正在招募志愿者。请你阅读下面短文,提取关键信息(每个回答不超过5个词),为同学们介绍马拉松志愿者的工作内容与社会责任。
In a marathon, have you ever seen some special runners holding signs with different finish times They are marathon pacers (马拉松配速员), also known as “rabbits”. They are usually experienced volunteers who guide a group of runners at a set speed.
Their work is to help others finish the race within their goal time. Usually, there are about 12 pacers in a marathon. Each of them leads a different pace group. Many runners achieve their best finish times with pacers’ help.
Pacers play an important part in a marathon. Firstly, they help runners save energy and avoid slowing down. For example, if you go out too fast in the first half of the race, you will run out of energy quickly and slow down in the second half. With a pacer, you don’t have to think too hard about your pace. You just need to keep up with your pacer. Besides, during the hardest part of the race, pacers support runners by encouraging them.
It’s meaningful but hard to be a pacer. Take Li Jun as an example. He began his marathon journey in 2015. Then he became an active runner. Before he became a pacer, he had not only achieved many good results but also got rich experience in running. In 2018, he became a pacer for the first time, leading a group of runners towards a goal time of 3 hours and 30 minutes. “I want to help others achieve goals.” Li Jun said. Since then, he has continued to serve as a pacer in many marathons.
Pacers are the real heroes of the marathon. They teach us that with courage and support, everyone can overcome (克服) challenges and reach their dreams.
66.What are marathon pacers also called

Dear friends,
I am happy to be here to share what we’ve done with you.
To improve good manners, we always listen carefully in class and obey traffic rules outside school. We also encourage each other to greet teachers and classmates with a warm smile every day. For volunteer work, we introduced a charity to help the poor and organized activities like cleaning parks. These activities not only make our school and community cleaner, but also teach us the importance of teamwork. We also found ways to help people in need.
Through these tiny actions, I feel proud and happy. Let’s join together to make our world better!
