When I joined UNICEF China as a volunteer, I couldn’t wait to help solve some big social problems right away. But at first, my job was only to interview the new staff (员工) about their training. I did what I was told to do, but to be honest, I didn’t feel like I was creating the value I imagined.
After a few days, my fellow volunteers and I were asked to make a video for UNICEF China. In doing so, I was able to work with some experienced staff and learn how they understood their job. Thanks to it, I have learned several important lessons.
First, making a big change takes time. Staff with the longest work experience in UNICEF usually make the most difference. Second, the time we have spent is always worth it, no matter how long it is. For example, it might take ages to help build up one school. Once it begins, it can grow and develop further. Moreover, I find that even the smallest thing we do can be valuable.
Later on, the video was completed. It showed what UNICEF China did. In it, some staff were working at the front line (前线), some were doing paperwork in the office and I was interviewing the new staff. I see that everyone is helping in their own ways, no matter how small the act is. Together, we are making a difference to our society and creating a brighter future for our children.

My Volunteering Experience During Summer Vacation
Volunteering is very meaningful and important. It can help others and make us feel happy too.
I still remember one of my volunteering experiences during this summer vacation clearly. I joined a community clean-up. At first, I felt a little shy to work with strangers, but soon we started to clean the park together. We picked up rubbish, swept the ground and even talked with people about protecting the environment. Gradually, I enjoyed the work very much.
Through this experience, I learnt the meaning of teamwork. I also experienced the joy of helping others and realized that even small actions can make a big difference.
