Rao told The Associated Press in an interview from her home that the prize is “nothing that I could have ever imagined. And I’m so grateful and just so excited that we’re really taking a look at the upcoming generation and our generation, since the future is in our hands”.
Time said Rao stood out for creating a global community of young innovators and inspiring them to pursue their goals.Rao insisted that starting out small doesn’t matter,as long as you’re passionate about it.
She told Time contributing editor Angelina Jolie in an interview that her science pursuits started early as a way to improve social conditions. The drinking water crisis in Flint,Michigan, inspired her to develop a way to detect pollutants and send those results to a mobile phone, she said.
“I was like 10 when I told my parents that I wanted to research carbon nanotube (纳米管) sensor technology at the Denver Water quality research lab,and my mum was like,‘A what ’” Rao told Jolie. She said that work “is going to be in our generation’s hands pretty soon.So if no one else is gonna do it,I’m gonna do it.”
In a world where science is increasingly questioned or challenged,Rao insisted that its pursuit is an act of kindness, the best way that a younger generation can better the world.
“We have science in everything we’re involved in,and I think that’s the biggest thing to put out there, that science is cool, innovating is cool, and anybody can be an innovator,”Rao said.“Anybody can do science.”

Students in Melanie Good’s “Physics and Science Fiction” course watched a clip (片段) from the movie Interstellar, showing an astronaut who has returned to Earth and is about to be reunited with his daughter. The students had just spent an hour learning about Einstein’s theory of special relativity.
They knew that, because this astronaut had shot off at enormous speeds and explored near enormous gravitational fields in search of other worlds, his clock would run more slowly than his daughter’s, stuck back on Earth. The astronaut was now 124 Earth years old, but he looked exactly like a 48-year-old, while his daughter was now elderly.
One student raised her hand. She understood how the time on two clocks could pass at different speeds, but why didn’t bodies still age at the same rate Good, who is a lecturer from the Department of Physics & Astronomy in the University of Pittsburgh, took some time to eventually convince the student that relativity’s predictions were accurate.
“I try to teach the physics first and then tie it into the sci-fi,” Good explained after class. While the course attracts mostly humanities majors trying to fulfill a science credit, it doesn’t shy away from the toughest concepts in physics.
The trouble with using this kind of fiction as a teaching tool, she allowed, is that no single science fiction work gets everything right. However, she said,“It’s OK to suspend disbelief. It’s science fiction.Interstellar, for instance, does a pretty good job as an aid to teaching Einstein.”
Gurudey Dutt, an associate professor in Physics & Astronomy, taught the course prior to this semester.“Science fiction is probably what inspired me to get into science in the first place,” he said; perhaps it will inspire others.Bad examples can even be instructive for students, he noted, such as examining the absurdity of Superman flying around the world in the opposite direction of its rotation (转动),to turn back time.
Good said her class this semester also emphasizes the scientific method and how it can be a fruitful approach to academic inquiry in general.
28.Why did Good ask her students to watch a movie in class
A.To offer them a break from study.
B.To analyze the reasonability of fiction stories.
C.To illustrate the actual use of the theory of special relativity.
D. To use science fiction as a medium to discuss scientific concepts.
29.Why did the author mention one student’s question in paragraph 3
A.To highlight the student’s strong desire to learn.
B.To explain how science fiction is related to physics education.
C.To demonstrate the difficulty of teaching complex scientific ideas.
D.To emphasize the importance of students asking questions in class.
30.What is the problem of Good’s way of teaching
A.Lack of scientific accuracy in some science fiction works.
B.The difficulty of attracting science majors to a physics course.
C.The challenge of finding a science fiction work regarding physics.
D.Inability to cover all physics concepts mentioned in science fiction works.
31.What is Dutt’s attitude toward some bad scientific examples in science fiction
A.They are sources of amusement.
B.They are too absurd to be referenced.
C.They have the potential to inspire the study of science.
D.They may be science phenomena yet to be explained.

A team of researchers at the University of Minnesota,Twin Cities has uncovered a way to handle objects using ultrasound waves (超声波),opening the door to contactless movement in industries like manufacturing (制造业) and robotics without the need for an internal power source.
While it’s been demonstrated before that light and sound waves can handle objects, the objects have always been smaller than the wavelength of sound or light. The University of Minnesota team has developed a method that can move larger objects using the principles of metamaterial (超材料) physics.
Metamaterials are materials that are artificially engineered to interact with waves, like light and sound. By placing a metamaterial pattern on the surface of an object, the researchers were able to use sound to move it in a certain direction without physically touching it, not too dissimilar from technology in science fiction stories like Star Trek.
“Contactless handling is a hot area of research, but this research suggests another method for contactless actuation (开动) that offers advantages other methods may not have,” said Matthew Stein, first author of the paper.“Also, outside of the applications that this research enables, expanding upon our knowledge of physics is just a very exciting thing to do in general!”
While this study is more of a demonstration of the concept, the researchers aim to test out higher frequencies of waves and different materials and object sizes in the future.
“In a lot of fields of science and engineering, robotics especially, there is the need to move things, to transfer (转换) a signal into some sort of controlled motion,” Ognjen Ilic, senior author of the study, said. “Often this is done through physical rope or having to carry some source of energy to be able to perform a task. I think we’re charting in a new direction here and showing that without physical contact,we can move objects, and that motion can be controlled simply by programming what is on the surface of that object. This gives us a new mechanism to contactlessly actuate things.”
32.What has the team of researchers developed
A.A way to use light waves to open the door.
B.A method for contactless movement in robotics.
C.An internal power source for manufacturing industries.
D.A technique to move larger objects using ultrasound waves.
33.Why does the author compare the method to technology in Star Trek
A.To suggest that futuristic technology can be realized.
B.To make a humorous reference to popular science fiction.
C.To imply that this method is not grounded in real science.
D.To question the practical applications of the research findings.
34.What can we expect of the research in the future
A.It will explore lower frequencies of waves.
B.It will test different applications of metamaterials.
C.It will investigate the use of physical contact in actuation.
D.It will study the interaction between light and sound waves.
35.What does Ognjen Ilic mainly talk about in the last paragraph
A.The challenges of working with metamaterials.
B.The limitations of traditional robotic technology.
C.The significance of the contactless actuation method.
D.The importance of studying robotics and engineering.

I begged my mom to let me make cookies by myself.Even though I had never attempted baking before, I was nine years old and my friend Emmie had been baking cupcakes by herself for a year.I was determined to prove that I could make it.
My brother, Caleb, laughed at the idea of me cooking alone, calling it a disaster.Having a big brother can be annoying.Despite his laughing, my mom agreed to let me try.She reminded me to take my time and be careful because I’d had some messy spills before I was nine.
I raced to the kitchen and went to work.I cracked eggs and put a cold stick of butter into the bowl.I turned on the mixer at medium speed—and whoa.Whoa.Whoa! What a disaster! I had to wipe butter off my face, then off the table and floor.
Caleb made fun of me again, calling me a mess.I chased him away with a spoon and turned back to the mixing bowl.I started again with softer butter.Referring to the recipe, I poured everything needed into the bowl and mixed it.After that, I put round batter (面糊) onto the cookie sheet and put it into the oven (烤箱).Within a minute, a fantastic smell filled the kitchen—the smell of cookie success!
I was going to prove that I was responsible. No more eye-rolling from my brother. No more “You’re too young” from my parents.I was grown up and in control.
I stared into the oven, and my heart sank. The neat, little balls had melted (融化) and overflowed to the edges of the cookie sheet.I pulled the pan out just as Caleb wandered back into the kitchen.
“What in the world ” He started to laugh.“Cookie soup ”
“You just be quiet,” I whispered, trying not to cry.“Just leave me alone.”
“How’s it going in there ” Dad called from the living room.
Caleb raised his eyebrows and bit his lip.I responded that everything was fine, pouring the melted batter into the bowl quickly.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。

W:This is your first attempt at poetry Did you ever try it before Did you take any classes in poetry
M:Well,my only real experience was writing business plans.Other than that,I have zero experience, where writing is concerned.I have always had a good grasp of the English language, thanks to my mum who started me reading when I was very little.
W:Your mum really plays an important part in your career. So what is the hardest thing about creating your work
M:Finding the perfect words to fit what I wanted to say. There’s always a word or two that I might still write if given the chance.
W:Will there be more collections of poetry from Darcy
M:There will be more of something,I suppose, but maybe not poetry.I really don’t see myself as a poet.(9) Rather,I see what I wrote as a kind of writing that might inspire people in some way.

W:Pretty good.
M:(13) Last time I saw you,you were planning to go to law school, weren’t you
W:Yes,I was,but as it turned out,I changed my mind.
M:Oh,really What changed your mind
W:(14) Well, the simple reason is that doctors are badly needed in my hometown at the moment,so I have decided to go to medical school instead.
M:Medical school That’s wonderful.
W:And how about you Do you still intend to study business
M:No,I have also changed my mind.(15) I’m studying Chinese now.
W:I didn’t know that.Why
M:Well,in my opinion, language is indeed a powerful tool.If I master the Chinese language well,I’m sure I will have more choices in the future.
W:I see.That sounds a wise decision.

I picked up the directions, wondering what had gone wrong. It was then that I realized I had forgotten to add the flour! The batter had been too runny, causing the cookies to spread out.I quickly mixed in the flour and spooned the batter onto a new cookie sheet. This time, I watched carefully as they rose and browned in the oven. The sweet aroma filled the kitchen, and my heart beat with excitement.I couldn’t wait to show my family what I had accomplished.Caleb sneaked in and raised his eyebrows, but this time, I just smiled confidently.
I brought a plate of cookies into the living room for my parents. They looked surprised and delighted.“These are...yours ” Mom asked, taking a cautious bite.“They’re...amazing!” She smiled, and Dad nodded in agreement.Caleb sat on the couch, a cookie in his hand, and his face betrayed a hint of pride.“I told you she could do it,” he said with a grin.I beamed, feeling a sense of accomplishment wash over me.I had proved myself, not just to my family but to myself. From that day on, no one doubted my baking skills again.
