Marathons just weren’t doing it for Preet Chandi. She wanted more.
“I knew for a while I wanted to do something big:I just didn’t know what that was going to be,” Chandi said. “At some point, somebody mentioned Antarctica to me.”Skiing through Antarctica would require Chandi—a 33-year-old British Army officer from England—to learn new skills. After two years of training,Chandi became the first woman of color to complete a solo (单独的) expedition in Antarctica in January 2022.But she went even farther. In 2023,Chandi completed a 70-day,922-mile solo expedition through Antarctica. It is said that her effort set a new record for the longest unassisted polar expedition.
Chandi was never the fastest or strongest athlete growing up,she said. But she liked to see how far she could push her body.Chandi spent years training for the Antarctica trips. But she was out of her element. When she first contacted a company that arranges Antarctic expeditions, they said she lacked the experience to attempt one. She knew she needed to get stronger.A solo trip meant pulling a 220-pound sled (雪橇).She started training by pulling tires(轮胎).She planned a shorter, 40-day expedition to the South Pole and back to prove she could do it, and got the okay. She successfully completed it. She then prepared for the real deal.
On November 14,she set off again. Things were tougher this time. Seasonal changes led to softer snow, which made the sled feel heavier.Winds blew the snow into wavelike hills that tipped the sled, forcing Chandi to stop and flip the 220-pound load back upright. She set out moving 15 hours a day and sleeping five-hour nights. But it wasn’t enough. Amid the difficult conditions,Chandi fell behind her schedule. She started skiing 20 to 24 hours at a time with 7 hours of sleep between. In the end, she had to stop just short of her goal. But she knows she pushed herself to the limit.
After 70 days, she finished her solo expedition and finally returned home satisfied. “I don’t necessarily have any plans at the moment,” Chandi said.“But ... I’m already feeling restless.”
24.What did Chandi do in 2022
A.She trained seriously for the British Army.
B.She walked to the South Pole alone.

25.What does the underlined part “out of her element” in paragraph 3 mean
A.Inexperienced. B.Undetermined.

27.How might people most probably find Chandi’s story

It is William Shakespeare, the great coiner, who is given credit for the word.Coriolanus, one of his characters, compares going into exile (流放) to a “lonely dragon” retiring to his cave.He was talking about a physical state: someone who was lonely was simply alone. Then, thanks to the Romantic poets, the word took on emotional meanings.Loneliness became a condition of the soul. For William Wordsworth, who famously “wandered lonely as a cloud”, the natural world offered an escape from negative feelings of loneliness — a host of flowers could provide “cheerful company”.Today, loneliness is often seen as a serious public-health problem, creating the feeling of disconnection.
In his book Solitude, Netta Weinstein, a psychology professor wonders the rewards of time spent alone. He begins with an account of stories of solitude created by figures such as Michel Montaigne, a writer, and Edward Hopper, a ta then draw on laboratory work, interviews and surveys to clarify how being alone really affects the human mind.
It is common to treat loneliness and solitude as synonyms (同义词), but they are not.The author suggests that what is negatively described as one state can be positively expressed as the other.Loneliness, often perceived as negative, can potentially be transformed into a positive experience of solitude. To this end he emphasizes how being alone can help restore people and offers practical advice. In a noisy world, he argues, people should make time to be alone, away from attention-grabbing motives.
The book’s interviewees mostly regard a lack of company as a contributor to autonomy. But this depends on whether solitude is desirable or not.Enforced solitude, such as that experienced by prisoners, typically leads to nothing but suffering.Elective solitude, by contrast, affords space for self-reflection.It can open the door to “peak experiences” such as wonder, harmony, and happiness. In a highly-connected digital age, however, many readers do not fancy their chances of ever taking a long enough break to have such experiences.
28.How does paragraph 1 introduce the concept of loneliness
A.By tracing its development.
B.By analyzing causes.
C.By making a point to be argued.
D.By sharing a romantic story.
29.What does Netta Weinstein’s book Solitude focus on
A.The various terms of solitude.
B.The societal impact of solitude.
C.The long-standing history of solitude.
D.The psychological benefits of solitude.
ta describes the state of loneliness as .
A.stressful B.essential
C.changeable D.never beneficial
31.What does Netta most probably agree with according to the last paragraph
A.Enforced solitude is a matter of choice.
B.Enforced solitude contributes to autonomy.
C.Elective solitude is rare in the digital world.
D.Elective solitude interrupts peak experiences.

In December 2017,the Republic of Palau carried out the Palau Pledge (承诺),which requires international visitors to sign a pledge stamp in their passports that promises the children of Palau that they will “walk lightly” and “preserve and protect” the islands.
Now,the archipelago (群岛) has gone further by launching a new programme called Ol’au Palau, a world-first set of rules established to encourage travellers to treat the island nation gently and respectfully and make sustainable decisions. And those who follow the rules will win points and be rewarded with unique experiences that are normally reserved for Palauans and their close friends.
Guests can then use their points to unlock cultural and nature-based experiences, such as taking an unmarked hike, swimming in a secret cave, sharing a meal with locals or fishing in an undisturbed lake. Ol’au Palau rewards can be tailored to what the responsible visitor is interested in.
The idea for this programme came about in 2015, by which time tourism had reached 150,000 visitors annually—more than seven times the country’s population—many of whom didn’t understand the fragile (脆弱的) ecosystem. While Palauan culture values hospitality, locals could see how a number of under-educated visitors were messing up their breathtaking islands. To solve this, Palau needed a way to educate travellers and have them earn the privilege (优惠待遇) of being a trusted friend, and Ol’au Palau was born.
As an economy that relies heavily on tourism, Palau is making efforts to introduce the world to its remote white-sand beaches and wildlife-rich dive spots. For example, the country recently established the world’s first National Marine Sanctuary which bans any type of fishing (including commercial fishing) in 500,000 sq km of ocean, making it an ideal spot to see one of 135 species of sharks and rays.“The coral reefs(珊瑚礁) are beautiful,” said resident Scottancien Arni.“The diving has been amazing with lots of sharks and great manta ray encounters at German Channel.”
32.What do the Palau Pledge and Ol’au Palau have in common
A.They aim to promote responsible tourism.
B.They require tourists to offer financial support.
C. They have strict regulations about protecting children.
D.They offer international visitors fascinating experiences.
33.What can those who have won enough points in Palau do next
A.Take courses on the country’s culture.
B.Work on preserving the remote islands.
C.Receive an amount of money as a reward.
D.Enjoy special scenic spots tailored for them.
34.What happened in Palau in the years before 2015
A.More educational opportunities were offered to locals.
B.Many programmes were built to spread Palauan culture.
C.The number of visitors to the country was declining.
D.Some tourists were damaging the environment.
35.What does the author want to say by mentioning the National Marine Sanctuary
A.Palau has made great contributions to sustainable tourism.
B.Palauans’ daily lives are closely connected with the ocean.
C.Travellers now rarely have the chance to fish in Palau.
D.Palau has changed the way travellers travel.

I was eight years old and wasn’t aware of all the arrangements being made for our journey as a family to London in 1950.My mother was in great pain and wished to visit specialists in London. My father reluctantly had to sell our property in Queensland. The day before we boarded the ship, Father unwillingly said goodbye to his five-year-old cattle dog, Spider, who was loved by us all.Father’s friend Sandy was to be his guardian while we were overseas, as he had been getting to know Spider for many weeks.
Six weeks later, an airletter arrived from Sandy, giving my father the news that Spider had run away just two weeks after we had sailed.Sandy had advertised constantly on ABC and other regional newspapers.Despite many “sightings”, the dog was never found. It seems Spider just kept running and searching for us.As he was a cattle dog, my father thought he would be shot or dingo-trapped, because of his appearance. But our family thought that Father held a secret hope that Spider was still alive.
We sailed back to Australia two years later and reestablished our home.My father immediately began his own search for Spider. One cold winter’s Saturday morning eight months after our return, my father had a call from an elderly lady living on her own on the outskirts of the town.As she told my father on the telephone, it was “just glimpses of a dingo-type dog in the shadows” of her disused tennis court. That was enough for my father to interrupt my homework.
We set off in his blue and black Jensen car which he had brought back from England. It was hardly the right vehicle for the rough roads we travelled that day.Five and a half hours later, we found the run-down old property.Sadly, she told my father that the “dingo dog” hadn’t been around for a few days.My father had a strange look in his eyes.He put two fingers to his lips and did his special whistle for Spider.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。

Good morning and (18) welcome to today’s program!(17) Feel English too difficult You can get some advice today.Firstly, find a regular and practical study program, like listening to some English study programs before breakfast.(19) This idea may sound useless to you who took English for quite a few years but didn’t become good speakers of the language. As a matter of fact,I don’t mean that you can become fluent speakers with just a few minutes here. However, following a regular course of study can be helpful. Also, small steps, step by step, are the key.For example, planning to learn five new words a day and learning to use them actively are far better than learning 45 and forgetting them the next day.Thirdly, speaking without fear is important.(20) The fastest way to learn something is to do it again and again until you get it OK.Don’t let fear stop you from getting what you want.

(2025·潍坊高二下联考)

Suddenly there was a sound in the bush.Out of the growth flew this battered dog right into my father’s arms.Spider had leaped over the tennis court fence with great force and certainty. My father’s eyes shone, and the old lady and I stood there with tears in our eyes.He kept licking my father’s face and making choking noises. He smelt dreadful. We wrapped him in an old blanket and I held him on my lap on the way back.He never once took his eyes off my father as we drove home.Every so often I received a lick of gratefulness.
Once home we had the task of getting all the prickles (刺) off him. Before he was put in a tin tub, we gently cleaned him up with soap.Spider stood stoically through all this as my father also examined his teeth and ears.Spider spent the rest of his days—years—on the front porch, content and satisfied, always in wait for my sister and me coming home from school where he would give us a lot of licks to make sure we were all right. He then waited for my father by the garage door.We never left him anywhere alone again.
