  What can a seal teach us about the deep ocean Plenty—as long as it’s wearing satellite-linked devices on its head.Clive McMahon,who works on an elephant seal tagging project at the University of Tasmania in Australia,said that deep-diving seals can provide scientists with a wealth of information on the structure of the ocean floor.
To gather this information,McMahon and his team attached small satellite-linked devices to seals.The devices took measurements of temperature and depth as the seals swam.Since 2004, McMahon’s team has tracked more than 500,000 individual seal dives beneath the East Antarctic continental shelf,which is the edge of a continent that lies under the ocean.
“Given the remote nature of Antarctica and the surrounding Southern Ocean,only a small part of the Antarctic continental shelf was surveyed by ships in the past,” McMahon said.“So the information available about this area is sparse.” But seals are helping scientists fill in the pieces to this puzzle.In July 2023,McMahon and his team published a study about their work with deep-diving seals in a scientific journal.
Information from seal dives is helping scientists understand how the ocean affects Antarctica’s role in global climate.“We found in some regions that more than 25 per cent of previous estimates of the ocean depths were wrong,” said Mark Hindell,who also worked on the study.“We only know this now because the seals were diving hundreds of metres below those depths.In the most extreme cases,they dived more than 1,000 metres (about 3,281 feet) deeper than what we thought was the ‘ocean floor’.”
The data,or information,from the dives also revealed new underwater features,including troughs,which are long,wide and deep sunken areas in the ocean floor.Thanks to the seals,the scientists also found a deep canyon near the Vanderford Glacier,which is a slow-moving river of ice hundreds or thousands of metres deep.

语法知识点拨
一、名词性从句的概念
在复合句中起名词作用的从句叫作名词性从句,包括主语从句、宾语从句、表语从句和同位语从句。
二、引导名词性从句的连接词
从属连词:that、whether、if等。
连接代词:what、which、who、whom、whose、whatever、whichever、whoever、whomever等。
连接副词:how、why、when、where、however、whenever、wherever等。
1.从属连词that的用法
that引导名词性从句,在从句中不作任何成分,没有任何意义,只起连接作用。
It is decided that the meeting has been put off till next Monday.(主语从句,不缺成分、语义完整)
已经决定把会议推迟到下周一。

是否要开会仍然是个问题。

The question whether he should join the team hasn’t been decided.(同位语从句)

(1)whether和if有时可互换,但在下列情况下,只能用whether。
①引导主语从句且位于句首时;
②引导表语从句或同位语从句时;
③引导的从句作介词的宾语时;
④后紧跟or not时。
(2)除了引导名词性从句时,当表示“是否”且后接动词不定式时也用whether,不用if。

  Stephen Warren,study leader at the University of Washington,has been on the case of the green icebergs for more than 30 years.He first took samples from one of these green hunks of ice in 1988,near the Amery Ice Shelf,East Antarctic.Most glacial ice takes on shades of white to brilliant blue.The bluer the ice is,the older it is.Typically,compression (压缩) from accumulating layers of snow pushes air bubbles out of the ice,reducing the scattering of white light.The compressed ice absorbs most of the light except for blue,creating the blue colour seen in the hearts of icebergs and glaciers.
The green ice was similarly bubble-free,and yet it looked green instead of blue.Warren and his team soon found that the green ice came not from glaciers,but from marine ice.That’s the ice from the undersides of floating ice shelves.
At first,the team thought that organic material in the marine ice was causing the green colour.But further research showed that the green marine ice didn’t have a higher-than-usual amount of organic impurities.Now,a new study finds that a different sort of impurity may be the root cause of the green ice.Warren and his colleagues report that the marine ice at the bottom of the Amery Ice Shelf has 500 times more iron than the glacial ice above.
This iron comes from the rocks under the Antarctic Ice Sheet,which are turned into fine powder as glaciers move over them.The icebound iron oxidises (氧化) as it contacts seawater.The resulting iron oxide particles take on a green colour when light scatters through them.When icebergs break off the large ice shelf,they carry this iron-rich ice with them.It’s like taking a package to the post office.The icebergs can deliver this iron into the ocean faraway,and then melt and deliver it to other living things that can use it as a nutrient.

Ⅲ.阅读理解(共4题;每题2.5分,共10分)
  Never has there been a primate as big as Gigantopithecus blacki.Adults of this ancient ape (猿) stood about 10 feet tall and could weigh more than 600 pounds,wandering the thick forests of ancient China during the last Ice Age.
Why this impressive animal went extinct has puzzled scientists since the ape was discovered nearly a century ago.But now,a new analysis suggests that the primate’s unique lifestyle left it vulnerable.
  The new study combines geological dates,pollen records,and clues preserved inside fossil teeth to present a detailed timeline of when,and how,Gigantopithecus blacki went extinct.The results reveal the creature’s decline and ultimate demise in fine detail.
Kira Westaway,lead author of the new study and a geochronologist at Macquarie University in Sydney,worked to come up with more accurate dates for the sediments (沉积物) that Gigantopithecus fossils have been found in.Studies of fossil pollen from the Gigantopithecus sites also allowed researchers to study how the animal’s habitat was changing.Prior to 700,000 years ago,both Gigantopithecus and Pongo weidenreichi, another ancient ape,lived in forests where they ate leaves,fruits,and flowers available much of the year round.Due to the environmental changes,dense forests of pines,birches and chestnut relatives gave way to more open habitats with larger patches of grassland. However,Gigantopithecus had a difficult time finding preferred foods.Meanwhile,Pongo weidenreichi changed its diet to live on fibrous plants that were more readily available.
“It was the response of G.blacki to these changes that sealed its fate,” Westaway says.The giant apes were so big that they had to move on the ground and were limited in how far they could venture,trying to make the most of twigs,bark,and other tough foods that were still accessible.It wasn’t enough.
Yet knowing the ending of the ape’s story hardly closes the case on the giant primate.Did these huge primates follow the same path to extinction,or did the story vary by location This research opens new questions even as it explains the disappearance of Earth’s largest ape.
