A Teenager‘s Volunteer Story
My name is Li Wei, and I’m 14 years old. Last year, I started volunteering at the Sunshine Nursing Home. It has changed my life in many ways.
At first, I was nervous. I didn‘t know what to say to the old people. I thought they might be bored or unfriendly. But I was wrong. They were very kind and full of stories.
Every Sunday, I go there to help with different things. Sometimes I read newspapers to them. They can’t see very clearly, so they really enjoy listening to the news. Sometimes I help them write letters to their families. Many of them miss their children and grandchildren.
I‘ve become good friends with Mrs. Zhang. She is 82 years old. She used to be a teacher. She tells me interesting stories about her young days. I also teach her how to use video calls so she can see her grandchildren. Last month, she successfully made a video call to her daughter in Shanghai. Her face lit up with joy.
Volunteering has taught me to be patient and grateful. I used to complain about small things, but now I realise how lucky I am. I also feel happy because I can bring smiles to others.
I encourage all young people to try volunteering. You don’t need special skills — just a kind heart.
True or False:
Li Wei started volunteering at a hospital last year.
Li Wei reads newspapers to the old people because they can‘t see very clearly.
Mrs. Zhang used to be a doctor before she retired.
Volunteering has taught Li Wei to be patient and grateful.

The Power of Volunteering
Have you ever helped someone without expecting anything in return If not, now is a good time to try. Studies show that helping others not only helps the people in need but also makes the helpers happier and healthier.
A 2025 study from the University of Oxford followed 2,000 volunteers for two years. The study found that those who volunteered at least two hours per week reported 25% higher levels of happiness than those who did not volunteer. They also had lower rates of depression and anxiety.
When you volunteer, your brain produces chemicals that make you feel good. This feeling of joy is sometimes called the “helper‘s high”. A 2024 brain scan study showed that the same areas of the brain light up when we give to others as when we receive rewards for ourselves.
Volunteering also helps you learn new skills. When you help at a charity event, you learn how to organise events, work in a team, and solve problems. These skills will be useful in your future studies and work. A 2025 survey of employers found that 85% said volunteer experience makes a job candidate more attractive.
Volunteering also helps you build social ties. You meet people from different backgrounds. You make new friends who share the same values. This can help you feel less lonely and more connected to your community.
So why not start today You don’t need to do big things. Even one hour a week can make a difference.
What did the 2025 University of Oxford study find
A. Volunteers reported 25% higher levels of happiness.
B. Volunteering has no effect on happiness.
C. Only adults can benefit from volunteering.
D. Volunteering two hours per day is required.
What happens in your brain when you help others
A. Nothing special. B. You feel tired.
C. Your brain shuts down. D. Your brain produces chemicals that make you feel good.
What percentage of employers said volunteer experience makes a job candidate more attractive
A. 25% B. 50% C. 75% D. 85%
What is the writer‘s advice at the end of the passage
A. Only volunteer if you have time.
B. Start with small acts of volunteering.
C. You must volunteer every day.
D. Only adults should volunteer.

The Inspiring Story of Zhang Guimei
Zhang Guimei is one of China’s most inspiring educators. For over 40 years, she has devoted her life to helping girls in poor mountain areas receive an education.
In 2008, Zhang founded the Huaping Girls‘ High School in Lijiang, Yunnan Province. It was the first free public high school for girls in China. Most of the students came from poor families and would not have been able to attend school otherwise.
The school was not easy to build. Zhang had to travel around begging for donations. Many people thought she was crazy. But she never gave up. In 2024, the school celebrated its 16th anniversary. Over the years, more than 2,000 girls have graduated from the school. Nearly all of them went on to attend college.
Zhang works tirelessly every day. She gets up at 5:00 am and goes to sleep after midnight. She suffers from more than 20 different illnesses, but she refuses to stop working. “I want to change the fate of these girls,” she says.
Zhang‘s story has inspired millions of people across China. In 2020, she was named “Role Model of the Times”. In 2025, a film about her life was released, showing her dedication to education to an even wider audience.
Thanks to her efforts, many girls who would have been forced to drop out of school now have the chance to pursue their dreams. Zhang shows us that one person can make a huge difference in the world.
