Traditional Chinese arts and crafts (工艺) have a long and rich history, showing the great skills
and unique beauty of ancient Chinese civilization. The four art forms below are important works
from old times and are celebrated both in China and around the world.
Cloisonné
Known as jing tai lan in Chinese, cloisonné is named after the Jingtai Emperor of the Ming
Dynasty, during whose rule mass production of such articles began. The crafts were brought from
Persia to Yunnan during the Yuan Dynasty and improved in the Ming Dynasty by combining with
traditional crafts, forming the new jing tai lan.
Jade objects (玉器)
Jade objects of the Liangzhu Culture are found mainly in Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Anhui near the
lower Yangtze River. The discovery of the largest “king of congs” in 1986 was a surprise. It is 8.8
centimeters long, 17.6 centimeters in width and weighs 6.5 kilograms, unearthed from an old tomb
on Mount Fanshan, Zhejiang.
Blue and white china
Before the Song Dynasty, Chinese china was basically blue or white. This changed in the Yuan
Dynasty, when the world-famous blue and white china was produced. Most materials came from
Yunnan, Zhejiang and Jiangxi, and the rest were from foreign countries.
Animal-shaped bronzes (青铜器)
During the Shang Dynasty, bronze containers were often crafted in imaginative animal forms to
draw the viewer’s attention. A well-known example is a wine container from Fu Hao’s tomb in
Anyang, Henan. It has a head like a horse, a wing on each side of its body and a dragon on the back.

On a peaceful afternoon in her French workshop, Hua Yong, an artist specializing in wood
crafting, found herself watching water boil. Without thinking, she reached for her phone and
checked the screen again. At that moment, she realized how much modern life is controlled by
speed. “We are completely caught up by the quick speed of life,” she said. “It’s becoming harder to
find time to relax.”
Hua Yong, the 2024 winner of the Hand of Wisdom prize, a China-France crafts exchange
program, spent two months in Paris last year, which allowed her to think deeply about creation. She
started trying simple shapes with straight lines and angles, practicing them repeatedly to create
visual (视觉的) effects that seemed to go beyond time and space. “I thought about how to make
something new from nothing, and used traditional Chinese skills to bring these ideas to life,” she
said.
“Wood crafting requires a lot of time,” she said. Her show Changing the World in Silence at
Yishu8, a place for art in Beijing, was the most meaningful part of a year’s deep thought. Running
until mid-June, the exhibition had 25 pieces of artwork, 11 of which were made after her stay in
Paris. Among the works was a vortex-shaped table, which drew the viewer’s mind into another
world. “We hope all the artworks here quietly stay with the viewers, giving their minds a short
break and a moment of relaxation,” described Hua.
“She has long worked with traditional Chinese materials and kept thinking,” said Su Dan, the
art leader of Hand of Wisdom, who has witnessed Hua’s growth since her return. “Works made in
such deep thought become perfect models of designing ideas: They may last only for a short time in
our daily life, but remain forever in our minds.”

In recent years, 3D printers have mostly been used to create small, specialized items (物品).
This includes parts for automobiles, airplanes and medical devices. Many consumer products can
also be 3D-printed as well, from clothes to foods. Now, an increasing number of start-up (新创办的)
companies are using 3D printing to build entire homes. Since the technology is still developing, not
many have yet been built. However, the top companies plan to greatly increase production in the
coming years.
The start-up company Icon, based in Austin, Texas, made news in 2018 by completing the first
permitted 3D-printed home in the US. At the time, it said the home had been built in just a day.
Since then, the company says it has been developing new technologies in robotics, software and
manufacturing materials. It designed its own 3D printer and said the robot-powered machine could
create buildings up to 185 square meters. The printing process uses a cement-based mixture that
Icon says is stronger and saves more money than traditional building materials.
Up to now, Icon has completed 24 3D-printed homes in the US and Mexico. Among them was
a community of 3D-printed homes in a poor neighborhood in Mexico. The company has also
completed a series of buildings for homeless people in Austin. And it says it plans to open America’
s first housing development of 3D-printed homes this summer.
A New York company, SQ4D, also uses 3D printing technology to build homes. In February,
第 3页/共 10页
the company showed off a 130-square-meter model home to demonstrate (证明) its printer’s
abilities. SQ4D plans to sell its homes starting at $299, 000. The company has even started listing
the homes on the Internet selling site Zillow. Kirk Andersen is SQ4D's director of operations. He
told Reuters the 3D printer will permit buyers to easily create their own home design, room by
room.
While 3D printing as a home-building method is just getting started, Andersen said others in
the construction industry need to get prepared for big changes. “This is the beginning. This is just
scratching the surface,” he said.
8. What can we learn about 3D printing technology from Paragraph 1
A. It has been perfect already.
B. It enjoys the highest status (地位 n.).
C. It is being used for building homes.
D. It helps produce some large and unique items.
9. What feature do 3D-printed homes have when compared with traditional building methods
A. They’re more comfortable. B. They’re more environment-friendly.
C. They’re more complex (复杂的 adj.). D. They’re less expensive.
10. What is the main idea of the text
A. The development of smart homes. B. The importance of 3D printers.
C. 3D printing in building homes. D. Construction industry’s future.
11. In which section of a newspaper may this text appear
A. Technology. B. Health. C. Education. D. Environment.

Snow leopards (雪豹), found in the mountainous regions of 12 Asian countries, including
Russia, Nepal, and China, are facing population decline due to historical hunting and habitat
damage. But a new study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences,
shows that their genetic makeup could also be influencing their falling population.
These snow leopards are highly adapted to extreme cold and mountainous environments. But
there aren’t many snow leopards left: Population is about 4,500 to 7,500. And because of this small
population size, they are classified as “vulnerable” species on the International Union for
Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species.
“Because their habitat isn’t so suitable for living, human population growth didn’t really affect
snow leopards very much, but climate change will,” says Dmitri Petrov, one of the study’s authors.
“Humans don’t need to show up in their mountains to build or start farming. The climate changes,
and it affects everyone and everything, even in such far areas.”
第 4页/共 10页
For this study, researchers made whole-DNA sequencing data (全基因组测序数据) for 37
snow leopards. The study found that many of these snow leopards share the same DNA. However,
low genetic difference can cause a problem for their survival. Snow leopards that have similar DNA
are more easily affected by environmental changes, disease, and hunters, which increases their risk
of dying out overall in a changing environment.
The study also showed that fewer snow leopards had potentially harmful DNA. Over time,
snow leopards were able to “clear out” bad genes, allowing the population to remain relatively
healthy. However, researchers say that isn’t enough to protect them against climate change, and
hope that this study can inform future protection efforts. If climate change starts getting much
worse, then snow leopards might be dying out relatively easily, simply because climate change has
a bad influence on their living space and the total population is so small.
12. What does the author want to tell us in paragraph 1
A. The joint efforts to protect snow leopards.
B. The newly built habitats for snow leopards.
C. The new-found cause of snow leopard decrease.
D. The new recovery of snow leopard populations.
13. What does the underlined word “vulnerable” in paragraph 2 mean
A. easily hurt. B. Difficult to find. C. Highly spread. D. likely to survive.
14. What is the primary future threat to snow leopards according to Petrov
A. The loss of their habitat.
B. The effect of climate change.
C. The interaction with human beings.
D. The competition with other species.
15. What is the author’s attitude to the future of snow leopards
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Concerned. D. Unclear.
