We use the past continuous to talk about actions that were happening at a particular time in the past.

1、过去进行时表示过去某一时刻正在发生的动作，
常与at that time / moment, then, at 9:00 p.m. yesterday等
时间状语连用。
2、过去进行时表示过去某一段时间内持续的动作，
常与all day, those days, the whole morning,
from 7:00 to 9:00, yesterday evening 等时间状语连用。
过去进行时的用法
1 ※过去进行时通常不用来表示多次重复或者习惯性的过去动作。表示这个意思常用一般过去时。
如:I called him three times and finally he answered the phone.
When I was young, I usually went to that park.
2 ※某些动词不用于进行式。如:
①表示思想和感情状态:believe，doubt，feel(认为)，know，(dis)like, love, realize, remember, see (明白),think, understand, want, wish。
②表示感官感觉:feel,hear, see, smell, sound, taste.
③其他:agree,appear, be, depend, disagree, include, matter, mean, need, own, please, promise, satisfy, seem, weigh。
