The Programme called PISA carried out a survey of students’ ability to work together in groups. They found
that students who do well in tests by themselves may also be better at working with other people. This finding is
true in many countries. Students in Japan, South Korea, Finland and Canada, whose test scores are high, also do
well in working together to solve problems. Learning to cooperate and compete is important.
But this is not right for every country. Chinese students with high scores show just average (一般的)
collaborative (协作的) skills. “One reason might be that Chinese parents and teachers pay too much attention to
grades,” said Zhao Zhongxin. “Students have a lot of exam pressure and they think of school as a place for
competition.”
“However, collaborative skills are very important for preparing students for today’s society,” he added.
“Luckily, more Chinese parents and teachers are realizing the importance of this and are thinking of ways to help

students improve these skills.”
Another interesting finding from the PISA survey was that girls are better than boys at working together. It
said girls show more active attitudes (态度), which means they are more willing to listen to others’ opinions. PISA
also found that the classroom environment influences how well students collaborate. In classes where there are a lot
of activities that need communication, such as class discussions, students have a better attitude towards
collaborating.
