●Playing hide and seek
Hide and seek was popular all over China in ancient times. There were two ways to play: keeping a child s eyes closed when others ran around to make fun of him or her; or more commonly, some children hid and one child tried to find them.

Why do people play games? Because they are fun, and a lot more besides. Following the rules, planning your next move, acting as a team member—these are all “game” ideas that you will have throughout your life.
Think about some games, such as rope jumping and hide and seek. They are fun. But more importantly, they translate life into exciting play that teaches children some rules to follow the rest of their lives, such as taking turns and teamwork.
Many children s games have a practical side: they prepare children for future work by training basic abilities. For example, some Saudi Arabian children play a game called bones. It can exercise their hands and eyes, a key skill for many jobs later in life.
Just as children s games teach lifelong skills, sports carry these ideas further and become a force that unites communities and even nations.
Many sports encourage national or local pride. The Olympic Games, the most famous games of all, bring athletes around the world together to take part in the friendly competition. People who watch the games wave flags, knowing that a gold medal is a win for a whole country, not just the athlete. For countries experiencing natural disasters(灾难) or war, an Olympic win can mean so much.
Sports are also a unifying force that brings people together. People across the world play soccer—some for fun and some for a living. One Californian soccer player has discovered a way to spread hope through soccer. He set up an organisation to provide poor children with not only soccer balls but also a hopeful future.

DIY, which means “Do It Yourself”, is quite popular in the UK. Lots of stores and supermarkets sell DIY things. TV programmes show people how to DIY.
British people like DIY. There is a saying in the UK: “An Englishman s home is his castle.” A huge number of people spend their holidays making their homes into beautiful “castles”. If there is anything that needs fixing around their homes, such as painting the walls or putting in a new shower, they will do the jobs themselves. They share DIY experiences with their friends.
More and more people have discovered the joy of DIY. Sometimes, people also DIY for saving money. With the economic downturn(经济滑 坡) at present, many people cannot afford a big house. They are looking for ways to make their houses better without spending a lot of money. It is not surprising that DIY is so popular.
DIY can be difficult. There is a huge market for DIY furniture which people need to put together themselves with a few basic tools. However, people often find it not easy to assemble(组装) a piece of furniture because they can t understand the instructions. Sometimes the instructions are simple and clear, but the furniture itself is difficult to assemble. One thing is for sure, although most DIY projects are started with the best intentions, many of them may not get finished.
DIY can also be dangerous. For example, anything electrical should be done by a professional worker. Unluckily, many people don t care about this warning and put themselves in danger. It is reported that in just one year over 230,000 people were hurt while doing DIY in the UK, including 41,000 who fell off ladders.
Therefore, DIY can bring us fun and help us save money, but it is not always as easy as it is thought to be if we bite off(咬掉) more than we can chew. Maybe factories should make products that are easier and safer for us to DIY.
