Are you good at remembering what you’ve learned at school Is it an easy process for all people No one’s memory is perfect. Even the smartest people forget things. This does not mean a person has a bad memory. It means he is not using his mind to his advantages.
The brain has short-term memory and long-term memory. When we learn something new, it stays in our memory for around 20-30 seconds. This is our short-term memory. It can hold a small amount of information. If we repeat it and use it often, this information can move from short-term memory to long-term memory, which is the place where memories are stored for a long time.
The skill for remembering is moving information from short-term to long-term memory. No one knows exactly how this happens. But one thing is for sure-practising, or making repetition of information, is one of the most popular methods of remembering. And scientists say that long-term memory will never fill up completely with memories in one’s lifetime.
Then why do we forget things Forgetting things that are not important helps our brain to remember things that are important. Our brain is always “cleaning out” useless information to make room for something more useful.
If you are interested in improving your memory, there are lots of simple things you can do, like eating healthily, sleeping well and exercising daily. Besides, it’s also important to challenge your brain. You can play mind games, learn a musical instrument or study a new language. All you need to do is to keep your brain healthy and active.

C.Listening or speaking. D.Practising or repeating.
7.The last paragraph mainly talks about ________.
A.the ways to eat healthily B.the ways to improve our memory
C.the reasons for playing mind games D.the reasons for studying a new language
8.From the passage, we know ________.
A.forgetting things makes our brains active
B.the smartest person has a perfect memory

D.new information stays in our memory for 20 minutes
Trees can provide many benefits for humans including cleaning the air and providing us with oxygen, shade, food, medicines, and beauty. They can help us to relax and destress, lower our heart rates and blood pressure and improve our mood.
Being outside and connecting with nature, especially hugging a tree, has been shown to be especially good for our mental health. The “Biophilia Hypothesis” (亲生命假说) is often given as a reason why being in nature is good for us. It was pointed out by US scientist Edward Wilson in 1984. He said that humans are born to love being around other living things. Humans’ love for nature is “in our DNA”. This idea helps to explain why people prefer natural, green views to city views. It’s also one of the reasons why people love cute pets.
A study in 2021 reported that tree-hugging can increase oxytocin (催产素). It’s a hormone responsible for feelings. The higher the level of oxytocin is, the calmer and happier you may be. One of the primary ways that oxytocin productions increased is through touch. Hugging trees for only 21 seconds can lead to an increase in oxytocin. Another hormone called cortisol (皮质醇) is a marker of stress. The brain produces more cortisol when the person is anxious, angry, or very sad. Hugging trees helps cut cortisol production, which makes us feel better.
Many animals are well-known for their tree-hugging nature, such as the sloths, giant pandas and koalas. Similar to dogs and kangaroos, koalas do not sweat. For them, hugging trees is a great way of keeping cool without losing water through panting (喘气). In hot weather, koalas loved to hug tree trunks that were cooler than the surrounding air. In higher temperatures, koalas also spread their bodies to increase surface area for the transfer of heat and could cool themselves down by as much as 68%.
If you have never hugged a tree, we hope that you are up for doing so. It’s an amazing way to connect with the natural world and get back to the roots that a lot of us humans seem to have forgotten. Although the activity is helpful to us, it’s important to keep in mind that we shouldn’t hurt nature while doing it.
9.Which of the following can be explained by the “Biophilia Hypothesis”

B.People prefer to live in the busy cities.
C.People like doing exercises in the sports center.
D.People love visiting theme parks in their spare time.
10.How might people feel with a lower hormone oxytocin
A.They might feel worried but patient. B.They might feel calm and happy.

Hilary Smith belonged to a good family. But by the age of twenty, he had spent all the money the good old family had. He then had some trouble with the bank and was put in prison. He escaped from the prison and ran to Australia at once.
Hilary did not like Australia, and Australia did not like Hilary. What he could do seemed to be one of two things: die or work. Then he remembered that he was not alone in the world. He had an aunt.
She was his father’s only sister, but his father used to say she brought no glory (荣耀) to the family. Hilary, of course, tried to discover what she had done. It seemed that she had failed to marry a nobleman. Instead, she had chosen a husband who was connected with “trade”. Of course, as soon as she became “Mrs. Parks”, her brother considered her dead. Later on, Mr. Parks died and left her a lot of money. But that did not bring her back to life in her brother’s opinion.
Hilary discovered his aunt’s address. Luckily she remained faithful and loyal to him even after she fell ill. So Hilary’s star shone again, and soon he moved into her house and lived as comfortably as a sailor who had just reached harbor. He had only about a six-pence in his pocket.
One thing was soon clear: his aunt was seriously ill, and nothing could cure her illness. Hilary was very worried. Fate had found a home for him, and was now going to throw him out of it. There was only one thing that could save him: her will (遗嘱).
“Will ”she said, “yes, I have made one. That was when I was a girl and had not much money. I left all my money to some religious people. ”
“Didn’t you make another will when you were married ”Hilary asked.
His aunt shook her head. “No, ” she said in a low voice. “There was no need. When I finally had a lot of money I found I had no relations. ”
On the next day he went to the public library and examined a book of law. It told him what he already believed. When a woman is married, an earlier will loses its value. A new will must be made. If no new will is made, the money goes to the nearest relation. Hilary knew that he was his aunt’s only relation. His future was bright.
After a few months had passed, Hilary’s problems became serious. He badly needed money. He had expensive tastes, and owed a lot of money to shopkeepers. They believed in him because his aunt was rich, but the debt was terrible.
Unluckily his aunt did not want to discuss money matters at all. In the end they had a quarrel about the small amount of ten pounds. Hilary was not very angry. He began to wonder about a new problem. Was it kind to want his aunt to live any longer Was it not better for her to die now While he was considering what to do, his aunt told him that she was going to send for her lawyer. So she was going to make a new will, Hilary thought. She might leave all her money to someone else. Soon he reached a clear decision. He must do a great kindness to the poor old woman.
One night when the old servant who had been nursing his aunt went off, he doubled the amount of some medicine. The total amount was too great and it could just put her to sleep forever.
“Thank you, ”his aunt took the glass from his hand with a grateful look. “I want, more than anything, to sleep, and never to wake up again. Is that what you wish, Hilary Don’t blame (责怪) me if I have some doubts about what you intended to do. Sick people get these ideas, you know. One thing I ought to explain to you. Mr. Parks never married me. He already had a wife and couldn’t marry again. That made your foolish father very angry with me…Well, if I am alive tomorrow I shall make another will in your favor (赞成). If I die tonight, you’ll get nothing…. No, Hilary, don’t try to take the glass away. If you do that, I shall know, and I don’t want to know. Goodnight, Hilary. ”

The cabins were broken and dirty. Finally, I found some food, a bottle of wine and some water and went back onto the deck.
I drank the water and gave Hands the wine. As he drank it, the colour returned to his face. “At present, I am controlling this ship, Mr Hands,” I said. “You need to treat me as your captain.”

So give me some food and drinks, and something to tie up my wound. Then I’ll tell you how to sail the ship. That’s fair, isn’t it ”
“I want to get to North Inlets.” I said. Israel Hands agreed to give me help, and in three minutes, the Hispaniola was sailing easily along the coast of Treasure Island. I then found a scarf to help Hands tie up the knife wound in his leg. After eating and drinking, he sat up and looked better.

I quickly climbed up the ropes and prepared both my guns. Hands climbed slowly and painfully after me, his knife in his mouth.
“One more move, Mr Hands,” I said, “and I’ll kill you!” Suddenly, one of his hands went back, and a knife flew through the air. I felt a sharp pain. But both of my guns fired, and fell into the sea together with Israel Hands. —Selected from Treasure Island

The Beginning of Summer falls on May 5th this year. It’s the first solar term after spring and also the seventh solar term of the twenty-four ones. By the Beginning of Summer, everything begins to grow fast. The Beginning of Summer means farewell to spring, and the entering into summer. So it is also called “the end of spring”.
In ancient China, people divided the Beginning of Summer into three periods.
The first period: the frogs begin to sing. In early summer, frogs begin to sing and look for food in the fields and ponds. With the voice of the frogs, the taste of summer is strong.
The second period: the earthworms come out. As the temperature in the ground continues to rise, earthworms climb from the underground to the surface to breathe fresh air.

High temperatures in summer are easy to cause mood problems, and diet therapy can play an important role. So people also eat a special kind of rice which is also called “colorful rice”. There are red beans, green beans, black beans, green beans and soybeans in the colorful rice. The ancients cooked the colorful rice to balance the five elements, which means producing good harvests and good health.

Thirty years ago, China started to build its own navigation satellite system (卫星导航系统), Beidou. It took its name from the Bigger Dipper stars, which are the guiding light for people around the world.
In 1994, China began making the Beidou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), so it wouldn’t have to use navigation systems from other countries. It’s a lot safer this way. In 2020, after over 20 years of hard work, Beidou completed its global network. The achievement placed China among the group of countries with their own global navigation network. The US, Russia and the European Union are the other three.
Beidou does not just show where you are. It’s also the first to let you send texts where there’s no phone signal (信号) or Internet. It has now been widely used in international rescue (救援) operations. “It can be of great help in earthquakes, when ground signals are completely cut off, ” Chen Suzhen, head of the Blue Sky Rescue Team in Xiamen, told CGTN.
On April 25, 2015, an earthquake hit Nepal. Lack of proper contact among international rescue teams created main problems in rescue operations. “Luckily, our team had BDS. With the short message service, I suggested that we should go to the remote areas where the situation was far worse. The BDS helped us a lot during the rescue. If every country uses the BDS, our future rescue operations will be far more effective,” Chen told CGTN.
With 5G technology now in wide use, the “5G + BDS” will be widely applied in conditions that require fast speed, precise (精确的) location and navigation services. For example, the BDS can even help farmers in China by providing precise information for planting and monitoring, making farming smarter.
The GPS and the BDS use the same way to find out position. We can see each satellite as the center of a ball, and its radius is the distance to the position. When there are three satellites, the position can be the two points where three balls pared with the GPS, the BDS provides navigation signals on multiple frequencies (多频信号) to improve service.
The BDS is more than a system. It shows China’s power in science and technology. Now over 120 countries are using it. Wherever you are, Beidou is there to help you find your way.
29.The following sentence would best be placed at the beginning of ________.
With its powerful performance, BDS is able to provide a series of services to meet different requirements.
A.Paragraph 3 B.Paragraph 4 C.Paragraph 5 D.Paragraph 6
30.Which of the following sentence has the closest meaning to “radius”
A.Half of the straight line between the centre of the two satellites.
B.Half of the straight line between the centre of the ball and your position.
C.A straight line between the centre of the ball and any point on its surface.
D.A straight line between the centre of the satellite and the centre of the earth.
31.What can we learn about BDS
A.It was praised highly by foreigners during the rescue.
B.It is used to help farmers plant crops in a modern way.
C.It can help send messages when phone is out of power.
D.It was widely used to meet different requirements in 2020.
32.The writing purpose of this passage is ________.
A.to describe the history of Beidou system
B.to explain the contributions of Beidou system
C.to show how to find the way by Beidou system
D.to introduce a kind of navigation satellite system
