W: Hello, and welcome to Weekend Kitchen. Today s special guest is Adam Tanner, host of the
very popular podcast(播客), The Lazy Chef. How are you today, Adam
M: Great, thanks, Julia. Rather sleepy! You have to get up early to be on morning television,
don t you
W: You do, rather! Did you struggle
M: Just a little! Well, they don t call me “The Lazy Chef” for nothing!
W: Ha-ha! So, how did someone so “ lazy” develop such a passion for cooking
M: Well,I must thank my grandmother for that. She loved cooking, but her meals were always
simple and quick, ready in fifteen minutes or less. If a cookbook called for fancy methods or
hours of preparation, she simply ignored it and did it in her own way!
W: Wow!
M: Well, she had a huge family and a full-time job. She didn t have time to mess about! But she
taught me that healthy food needn t be difficult or expensive to make.
W: Wonderful! So,tell us about the dish you re going to be preparing on today s show

M: I ve promised myself I m going to read more books in the coming year.
W: Oh, really
M: Yeah. I used to read at least three books a week, as a kid! It was my favorite hobby. But
nowadays, I almost never seem to find time.
W: I know what you mean. I used to read a lot more, too. Now I spend all my free time on Weibo
or watching brainless TV shows.
M: For me, it s playing those stupid mobile phone games.
W: I suppose you can t really blame us. Modern life is so stressful and busy. We need to relax.

M: True. But I m not sure those things are really helpful. Many studies suggest a connection
between too much time on social media, or playing video games, and poor mental health.
W: Yeah. I wouldn t be surprised.
M: Meanwhile, reading has been shown to have the opposite effect. One study from t he U ni ve rsi ty
o f S u sse x showed that reading may reduce stress by almost 70%!
W: Wow! Really Perhaps I should borrow your idea for myself. How many books are you aiming

My family recently took a trip to Florida to visit Walt Disney World, where we enjoyed theme
parks, water parks, resorts(旅游胜地), dining, and shopping. We stayed at a lovely beachfront
hotel. One night, I looked out of the window and noticed something strange. Rather than being
white or yellow, all the lights along the beachfront were red. I asked the man at the front desk
about the unusual lighting, and he explained it was used to help protect the area s turtle population.
My dad and I did some research and discovered that light pollution is a serious issue for the world s
sea turtles. When they leave their eggs, baby turtles head toward the brightest light they can see.
Under natural conditions, this would be the light of the moon and stars on the water. However,
bright electric lights often confuse them, guiding them away from the sea and toward busy roads
and hungry, turtle-eating creatures. Female turtles may also be discouraged from laying their eggs
on bright beaches. Scientists discovered that turtles are unable to see red and orange lights well,
making them less likely to affect turtles behavior. Now, “ turtle-safe” lights are used in most
coastal communities in the Gulf of Mexico. I think it is really cool!
