After almost three months, two old Croatian veterans(老兵) succeeded in the historic effort of crossing the Atlantic Ocean in a rowing boat.Martin Cruickshank and Werner Ili successfully rowed to Barbados on Earth Day after 83 days spent on the ocean. Also, the two veterans honoured their country by using an eco-friendly Fenix boat for their journey.
Martin and Werner are veterans who returned from abroad to defend the Croatian homeland in the 1990s and have now completed the historic “Paddle Across the Atlantic” adventure. These two veterans rowed across 5,500 kilometres of the relentless Atlantic Ocean using only a boat and oars(桨).They began their trip on January 15,2022,and ended it on Earth Day.
The two veterans rowed across the Atlantic for days,a route only a few brave rowers had travelled before them. Finally, they set off from the Spanish Canary Islands and planned to get to Martinique in the Caribbean Sea.However, due to unfavourable natural conditions and a strong storm, their boat Fenix landed in Barbados. The veterans showed that love for their country can be a strong force that helps people succeed in very difficult tasks.
“We knew it would not be easy.We expected difficult conditions and exceptional physical effort while rowing, but for the homeland’s glory(光荣),nothing was difficult for us.We did not expect that such a strong storm would completely change our route,so we are proud and grateful that we managed to sail to Barbados alive and with an undamaged boat,” said Werner Ili.
Arriving in Barbados on Earth Day,which marks the importance of caring for the environment, the veterans highlighted the need to protect the ocean.
On Saturday, the President of the Republic,Zoran Milanovi, congratulated Werner Ili and Martin Cruickshank.“In 83 days of travelling across the rough Atlantic, you have shown courage, bravery, and honourable human qualities that you have already proven yourselves in the Homeland War,” said the Croatian President.

Climate change is largely responsible for the mass die-off of our planet’s coral reefs(珊瑚礁),as stress caused by higher water temperatures causes corals to drive away the algae(藻类) living within them. The loss of that life-giving algae isn’t the only problem, however.
Stressed corals are also more likely to be infected by naturally occurring bacteria. In the past, populations of those extremely small living things were kept to manageable levels by sea cucumbers(海参),which feed on seafloor sediment(沉积物).Unfortunately, due to over-harvesting for use in the Asian seafood market, sea cucumbers are now becoming increasingly rare in many regions.
In order to see just how crucial the animals are to coral health,a Georgia Tech team led by Mark Hay and Cody Clements conducted a series of field experiments in the South Pacific Ocean.
Near the island of Moorea in French Polynesia, the scientists left existing sea cucumbers in 10 plots of sandy seabed and removed them from 10 others, then planted five coral groups in each of the plots. Those plots were subsequently inspected on a daily basis for a period of 45 days.It was ultimately found that coral death rate caused by sediment-associated diseases was 15 times greater in the sea-cucumber-less plots.
Hay and Clements now hope that their findings will motivate governments and other groups to implement stricter limits on the harvesting of sea cucumbers, and to begin raising the animals for release onto corals that are in need of protection.Farmed sea cucumbers could potentially also find use in keeping fish farms clean, and possibly even delaying certain diseases.
“If you remove all the sediment eaters in the great fish tank of Earth, you’re going to get a dirty tank eventually,” said Clements.“People have paid lip service to the idea that sea cucumbers could be important for a long time, but we didn’t know the scale of their importance until now.”
5.Why are sea cucumbers important for coral health
A.They directly provide nutrients to corals.
B.They help to reduce disease risk to corals.
C.They produce algae essential for coral life.
D.They drive the harmful algae away from corals.
6.What was the key difference between the two sets of plots in the experiment
A.The presence or absence of sea cucumbers.
B.The types of coral groups planted in them.
C.The quantity of seafloor sediment in each plot.
D.The frequency of inspections over the 45-day period.
7.What did Hay and Clements appeal for
A.A ban on seafood harvesting in the tested region.
B.The establishment of new coral reserves worldwide.
C.The adoption of more sea cucumber conservation practices.
D.Further study on the uses of farmed sea cucumbers in medicine.
8.What do Clements’ words imply in the last paragraph
A.The importance of sea cucumbers was greatly overstated.
B.Sea cucumbers were considered insignificant for a long time.
C.People have already taken measures to protect sea cucumbers.
D.Sea cucumbers play a vital role in keeping marine ecosystem healthy.

B(2025·河南信阳模拟)
Every year, tens of thousands of people around the world apply for research jobs armed with postgraduate qualifications and specialised knowledge, only for their carefully crafted applications to seemingly disappear into a digital blank. At the same time, recruiters(招聘者) report that they are unable to find appropriate candidates for open positions.
One key cause of this mismatch is the perception that someone with science qualifications is fully qualified for research work. The reality is that, often,a PhD or a first postdoctoral post is corresponding to an entry-level qualification, with the holder needing further advice, guidance, mentoring and experience before they can work independently.
Shifting generational priorities also play a part. For example, most current early-career scientists are millennials(千禧一代),born between the early 1980s and mid-1990s.They are often digitally skilled and bring with them a strong cooperative nature and a desire to see their work have a societal impact. They also tend to value work-life balance and career flexibility, which might not always agree with the priorities of the scientists interviewing them for jobs.
Meanwhile, employers report that candidates often lack creative thinking,problem-solving and communication skills and qualities such as persistence, passion and determination.
Addressing these challenges requires a multifaceted approach.Universities and other research training institutions can do more to expand the focus of PhD training beyond the academic track. This means providing advice and guidance about what career paths and job opportunities might be available for researchers in companies, the public sector and non-governmental organisations.Employers need to consider the benefits of structured training for early-career researchers,as a way to boost critical thinking and analytical skills. This could be done by reproducing the training schemes commonly used by large technology, consulting, finance and legal firms.
The path forward requires jobseekers and recruiters to understand each other better.Candidates would benefit from learning why recruiters are dissatisfied with the competence of applicants.Institutions, for their part, must see themselves as architects of scientific careers. This means acknowledging that professional preparation isn’t a distraction from research excellence—it is an essential component of it.
5.Why do postgraduates fail to find satisfying jobs
A.Inadequate academic preparation.
B.Limited job information sources.
C.Absence of proper job-seeking skills.
D.Misjudgment of qualification suitability.
6.Which priority of millennials affect their job seeking
A.High cooperation ability.
B.Emphasis on digital tech use.
C.Pursuit of work-life balance.
D.Freedom for mind and body.
7.What training should be given to PhD researchers
A.Career-related advice.
B.General skill building.
C.Financial management tips.
D.Academic-focused guidance.
8.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A.Role of institutions in research.
B.Importance of skill development.
C.Discontent of recruiters with applicants.
D.Significance of understanding each other.

“I know I can’t change a person or the choices they make. However, having the capacity to make a difference in the life of not one,but many,is something I desire to,” says 19-year-old Amatulah Vahanwalla.
Evidently, she walks the talk.It all began in November 2015,when Amatulah and Niharika Jaju,Class Ⅺ students, were discussing their community service project.Niharika told Amatulah about her first hair donation experience at the age of nine and that she was eager to do it again. This set off a chain of brainstorming sessions, and they came up with a hair donation drive—Hair for Happiness (HH).The proceeds of the campaign go to the Little Prince Trust (LPT),a British non-profit that helps create wigs made from real hair for children suffering from hair loss due to illness.“Painstaking research goes into finding physical treatments for serious diseases. However,it makes me sad that people who are suffering are treated like numbers on a graph, nothing more and nothing less,” says Niharika.
Motivation for helping a child regain self-esteem helped them overcome obstacles.Initially, all the hair donation organisations only accepted longer strands (12 to 13 inches) of untreated hair.“But the Little Princess Trust had a minimum requirement of seven inches of hair to make wigs and donate wigs,” says Amatulah. This opened up a bigger door for cooperation.
However, another struggle was to find enough donors.Through promotions in schools, departments,as well as salons like Cracle, and reaching out to volunteer hairstylists, they eventually made it.Since the initiative was consistent with their social responsibility goals, some companies provided funds by covering the cost for larger drives.
“I think the moment I finally realised the significance of our creation was when we crossed 100 donations,” says Niharika. This, when they assumed it would take a “miracle to reach even 10 donations”.
4.What upset Niharika according to paragraph 2
A.The lack of hair donors.
B.The ignorance of human-centred care.
C.The imbalance of medical resources.
D.The overemphasis on medical treatment.
5.What fostered the partnership between HH and LPT
A.LPT’s less demanding conditions.
B.LPT’s established reputation.
C.HH’s pressing need for hair.
D.HH’s constant innovation.
6.Why did some companies sponsor the project
A.To enhance corporate image.
B.To strengthen bonds between schools.
C.To spread awareness of charity.

While volunteering at a Bolivian animal reserve,I saw all kinds of monkey bites and scratches. It was common for backpackers to show off their fresh wounds at the end of each day. 8
One morning, those volunteers with the appropriate big-animal training didn’t wake up for some reason.I happened to be there. 9 After an hour of hard walk through the jungle, one of the team members and I reached the lion’s area. The huge cat growled(咆哮) at me with a distinct sense of dislike. But that didn’t stop us from continuing our task.We entered the caged area, attached two ropes to the lion’s “collar” and began to walk him through the jungle.
10 After only a couple of minutes,he stopped, looked back at me and growled directly into my eyes.I watched helplessly as it jumped 10 feet into the air toward me.In a second, his powerful legs wrapped around my waist and sharp teeth pressed into my forehead.
I heard my team member scream. But I couldn’t move. 11 The scream faded as I began to lose consciousness. Then, all of a sudden,I was released. The animal let me go and stepped backwards.
My team member yelled “stick your palm out toward him”.For some reason,I did.The huge cat stepped back toward me and licked(舔) it.And,that was it.He knew that I knew, who was king of the jungle. 12
A.After that we were friends.
B.But no one had a story like this.
C.But be sure you don’t risk it like I did.
D.So,I agreed to help out with the lion.
E.Completely still,I assumed the worst.
