The 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics surprisingly didn’t go to a typical physicist but instead to two pioneers in machine learning: John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton. What they did was to use principles from physics to make discoveries in machine learning, which pushed the development of AI. This is a perfect example of joining ideas from different subjects to achieve a breakthrough. ▲
In simple terms, cross-disciplinary learning is about not sticking to just one subject. It means being curious and open to ideas from different fields—whether it’s science, art, history or technology—and using that knowledge to improve our own understanding.
Cross-disciplinary learning is nothing new. We have seen many examples over the centuries. Even the ancient Greeks practised it. They believed that music, maths and astronomy (天文学) were interconnected. This helped them make groundbreaking discoveries.
Great minds like Leonardo da Vinci, Isaac Newton, and Zhang Heng gave us amazing and influential creations because they were inventors, scientists, mathematicians, engineers and more, all at the same time. These inventors used knowledge from many different fields.
As they proved, great achievements often come from thinking beyond the boundaries of a single subject. This is why, nowadays, schools are pushing cross-disciplinary studies. They hope that by drawing from multiple areas, students can contribute to different fields and make a meaningful impact.
Cross-disciplinary learning can help you gain new opinions, find creative solutions and most importantly, better prepare you to deal with the complex challenges of tomorrow. You never know where inspiration might come from. Sometimes the best ideas are found in the most unexpected places. So, go ahead, mix it up, learn from everything, and see how far it takes you!

23.Why does the writer mention great minds in Paragraph 4
A.To show how clever they were. B.To tell how they made inventions.

A.It was first created and practised by ancient Greeks.
B.It helps find out where your inspiration comes from.
C.It focuses only on the study of science and technology.
D.It contributes to thinking beyond the boundaries of a subject.
25.Which of the four students is practising cross-disciplinary learning

In a world where many people are fighting with challenges, charity has become more necessary than ever. 26
It gives us a chance to care about their feelings and take action to support them.
Charity helps solve problems. Some charities offer food to hungry families. Some build schools in poor areas. 27 For example, after earthquakes or floods, charity groups often arrive first to save lives.
Never worry that your actions are too small to matter. Small actions can lead to big differences. A simple act like giving directions for a lost tourist, is part of building a caring world. 28 Anyone can join charity work, no matter his age, job, or social role. Students might collect books for children, and teachers can give free lessons. Even young kids can join by drawing cards for sick people in hospitals. Their smiles show that charity is joyful for helpers too!
29 When people work closely with each other, they may feel a sense of belonging (归属感). Let’s take cleaning a park with others as an example. People not only make a tidier and cleaner environment for visitors, but also get the chance to feel like a family. Last year, my school raised $500 for a children’s hospital by selling handmade crafts. We learned teamwork and kindness at the same time!
Charity also makes us better people. 30 Helping others allows us to better understand their difficulties and build our own patience. Let’s start today. Share your lunch with a friend, help an elderly neighbour, or donate old clothes. Remember that kindness grows when we pass it on.
A.Charity means helping people in need.
B.It builds up our personalities and values.
C.It’s not only the powerful who can do charity.
D.Giving directions for a foreigner is not an easy task.
E.Others are especially helpful to people facing natural disasters.
F.Charity helps people build friendship and brings people closer.
G.Natural disasters leave millions of people homeless and hungry.

Terrible weather events are harming the planet, and experts warn of even greater results to come. The sea ice loss and the Arctic ice melting (融化) caused by climate change have increased much in the last ten years. So they have pushed down the number of polar bears and seals while polar bears depend on sea ice for hunting seals.
According to the data from WMO, temperatures on the Antarctica (南极洲) just hit 18.3℃, which is higher than the record of 17.59℃ in March, 2015. Moreover, temperatures in this area have warmed about 3℃ over the last 50 years. Although such temperatures might be considered pleasant for a picnic or a hiking trip, this is the Antarctica we are talking about. It is home to the most inhospitable (不适宜居住的) environment on the planet because it is supposed to be an extremely cold place. In fact, the average temperature of the continent’s central area is -57℃.
Besides, many places are experiencing the extreme weather. Australia is undergoing its worst drought (干旱) since the 1930s, leaving bush fires burning so long and causing many deaths. Meanwhile in Europe, crops in the northwest are suffering the driest weather in the past 80 years. Recently West Texas in America has also gone through its worst drought in more than 70 years, while floods have hit Eastern and Southern China.
“Climate change is bad for us human beings, which causes direct health problems. I’m afraid there will be more common events like the one that 30,000 to 50,000 persons died in Europe in 2003 due to the heat wave there,” Professor Schwartz said. “It will also cause more air pollution, diseases and lack of clean water and so on.”
54.What brings down the number of polar bears according to this passage
55.What forms of extreme weather are mentioned in the passage
56.Please write another form of extreme weather you know about. What can we do to prevent it

1.At last, the poor woman ________ that the company couldn’t afford ________ her work.
A.told; paying for B.was told; paying C.told; to pay D.was told; to pay for
pay for为…… the poor man与选项核心词tell之间为被动关系,根据“couldn’t”可知,第一空需一般过去时的被动语态,其结构为was/were done,主语为名词单数,需was,tell的过去分词为told;afford to do sth.“负担得起做某事”,故空处需动词不定式to pay for。故选D。
2.The photos you just found are ________ old that I almost forget where they ________.
A.so; have taken B.so; were taken C.such; have taken D.such; were taken
考查so…that… 根据“The photos you just found are…forget where they…”
3.The patient ________ immediately after the accident and sent to the hospital.
A.operated B.operated on C.was operated D.was operated on
4.She is one of the most ________ women in the country.
A.influential B.influence C.influenced D.influencing
【答案】A
5.Our parents provide us ________ food and love. We should be thankful.
A.for B.with C.to D.on
for为了;with向、给;to朝、向;on在……上面。“provide sb. with sth.” 应填with。
6.________ is important for us to help those who are less fortunate.
A.This B.That C.There D.It
This这个;That那个;There那里;It它。该句是固定句式It is +形容词+for sb to do sth,表示“对某人来说做某事是……的”,该结构中It作形式主语,真正的主语是句末的不定式短语to help those who are less fortunate, this、that和there都不能充当该结构的形式主语,因此正确选项为It。
7.— When will the new community centre open to the public
— Not until all the safety checks ______.
A.complete B.will complete C.are completed D.will be completed
complete完成;will complete会完成(一般将来时);are completed被完成(一般现在时的被动语态);will be completed会被完成(一般将来时的被动语态)。 这里“all the safety checks”(所有的安全检查)和“complete”(完成)之间是被动关系,所以要用一般现在时的被动语态“am/is/are + 过去分词”,“checks”是复数,所以用“are completed”。
8.—Let’s go to play soccer, Jack.
—I’m afraid not. I will need one more hour before my project ________.
A.finished B.is finished C.will finish D.will be finished
9.—Do you think Brazil will beat Japan in the next match
—Yes, they have better players, so they ________ to win.
A.are hoped B.expected C.are expected D.were hoped
are hoped被希望;expected期望(过去式);are expected被期望;were hoped被希望(过去式)。“hope”不能用于“sb. be hoped to do”结构;“expect”可以用于“sb. be expected to do”表示“某人被期待做某事”。根据“they have better players, so they…to win”可知,此处表示“被期望获胜”,主语“they”指巴西队,与“期望”之间是被动关系,且时态为一般现在时,用“are expected”。故选C。
10.All we need ________ enough support to carry ________ with our plan.
A.is; on B.is; / C.are; on D.are; /
【答案】A
根据“All we need…enough support to carry…with our plan”可知,“all we need”中“all”指代抽象名词“support(支持)”,视为单数,故谓语用“is”;“carry on with sth.” 故选A。

A.It was first created and practised by ancient Greeks.
B.It helps find out where your inspiration comes from.
C.It focuses only on the study of science and technology.

54.根据第一段中“The sea ice loss and the Arctic ice melting (融化) caused by climate change have increased much in the last ten years. So they have pushed down the number of polar bears and seals while polar bears depend on sea ice for hunting seals.” Climate change./The sea ice loss and the Arctic ice melting.
55.根据第三段中“Besides, many places are experiencing the extreme weather. Australia is undergoing its worst drought (干旱) since the 1930s, leaving bush fires burning so long and causing many deaths.…Recently West Texas in America has also gone through its worst drought in more than 70 years, while floods have hit Eastern and Southern China.” Droughts and floods.
