The next time you’re feeling depressed or angry at the world, ask yourself if you’ve really been dealt a poor hand — or if, just maybe, you were expecting too much. That’s one message that can be drawn from a recent study on entitlement, a personality trait characterized by exaggerated feelings of deservingness and superiority. Entitlement may lead to constant disappointment, say researchers from Case Western Reserve University.
The authors reached these conclusions after analyzing more than 170 academic papers. They found that people who possess high levels. of entitlement consistently fall victim to a three-part cycle: First, they don’t always get everything they think they deserve, leaving them constantly vulnerable to unmet expectations. Those unmet expectations are then perceived as injustices, leading to emotions like anger and sadness. Finally, to justify those emotions, entitled people reassure themselves of their own specialness. This helps them feel better temporarily, but ultimately starts the process all over again.
At extreme levels, entitled people repeatedly expose themselves to the risk of feeling frustrated and disappointed with life. They also tend to suffer from poor relationships, interpersonal conflicts, and depression, says co-author Julie Exline, PhD, a professor of psychological sciences at Case Western Reserve. “So much of entitlement is about competition — being better or more deserving than other people, ”she told . “It really sets in opposition to society, and it can be very isolating. ”
“It’s not easy for true narcissists (自恋者) to see themselves for what they are, or to change their way of thinking.” Exline says. But she does believe that, for many well-intentioned people, feelings of entitlement can be controlled. “Conditioning yourself to think about other people and what they deserve — and also being willing to admit your own faults and weaknesses — can help you feel more connected to others, ” she says.
We should be also aware that not all feelings of entitlement are wrong or bad: We shouldn’t just lower our standards or stop expecting things we truly do deserve, just so we can be happier. But if you do notice that you’ve developed an overblown sense of self — and it’s causing you to be annoyed or not get along with others — you can definitely try to do something about it.
8.What causes entitled people to be trapped in a three-part cycle
A.Consistent negative emotions. B.A strong sense of self-awareness.
C.Constant self-pity and helplessness. D.Unrealistic expectations and frustration.
9.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about
A.The reason for entitlement. B.The benefits of competition.
C.The negative effects of entitlement. D.The importance of connecting with others.
10.What might be Exline’s suggestion for entitled people
A.Change your mindset to one of competitiveness.
B.Focus on your own achievements and superiority.
C.Prioritize personal goals over considering others’ needs.
D.Place yourself into others’ position and reflect on yourself.
11.Which word best describes the author’s attitude to entitlement
A.Balanced. B.Critical. C.Supportive. D.Tolerant.
A new study published in the journal Science Advances finds that AI enhances creativity by boosting the novelty of story ideas as well as the “usefulness” of stories - their ability to engage the target audience and potential for publication. It finds that AI “professionalizes” stories, making them more enjoyable, more likely to have plot twists, better written and less boring.
The researchers assigned the 300 study participants to three groups: one group was allowed no AI help, a second group could use ChatGPT to provide a single three-sentence starting idea, and writers in the third group could choose from up to five AI-generated ideas for their inspiration.
They then organized 600 people to judge how good the stories were, assessing them for novelty - whether the stories did something new or unexpected - and “usefulness” - how appropriate they were for the target audience, and whether the ideas could be developed and potentially published.
They found that writers with the most access to AI experienced the greatest gains to their creativity, their stories scoring 9% higher for novelty compared with stories written without AI. Writers who used up to five AI-generated ideas also scored higher for emotional characteristics, producing stories that were better written, more enjoyable, less boring and funnier.
The researchers evaluated the writers’ creativity using a Divergent Association Task (DAT) and found that more creative writers - those with the highest DAT scores - benefited least from generative AI ideas. Conversely, less creative writers saw a greater increase in creativity.
The researchers also calculated how similar the stories were to each other. They found a 10.7% increase in similarity between writers whose stories used one generative AI-idea, compared with the group that didn’t use AI.
Anil Doshi, Assistant Professor at the UCL School of Management said, “While these results point to an increase in individual creativity, there is a risk of losing collective novelty. If the publishing industry were to embrace more generative AI-inspired stories, our findings suggest that the stories would become less unique and more similar to each other.”
12.Which aspect of the AI-assisted stories were assessed in the study
A.Universality and availability. B.Originality and practicality.
C.Creativity and specialization. D.Similarity and integrity.
13.What might the underlined word “Conversely” in paragraph 5 probably mean
A.Sure enough. B.In conclusion. C.On the contrary. D.As a result.
14.What is Anil Doshi’s attitude towards AI-inspired stories
A.Objective. B.Indifferent. C.Favorable. D.Ambiguous.
15.What can be a suitable title for the passage
A.AI Is Being Used to Create Novel Stories
B.AI Is Becoming a Threat to Human Writers
C.AI Can Help to Improve People’s Writing Skills
D.AI Can Boost the Creativity of Stories but Pays a Price

I liked things going according to my plans. But lately there had been lots of troubles in my life. My daughter Gabby had a disease, making it difficult for me to focus on my job. One day, I went for a walk on the beach. It was something I’d been too busy to do before. As I slowly walked, looking at the blue sky and sea, my mood gradually lightened.
On my way home, I came across an art supply store. Attracted by the beautiful decorations, I walked inside. I hadn’t painted since I was a child, and I had already forgotten what most of the tools were for. Therefore, I decided to leave after a while. Just then, a young man approached and asked whether I needed any help. I wanted to say no and get out of the store. But soon I changed my mind and replied, “I would like to paint, but I don’t know what to buy.”
“My dad is an artist. I can show you everything you need,” the young man offered. He carefully picked out a set of paints and recommended brushes and other necessary things. “Have fun!” he added before I left. “I expect you to show me a painting the next time you come in here.”
I smiled weakly. Not likely, I thought. Yet that night, after Gabby went to sleep, I set up the easel (画架) and the tools in the dining room and decided to give it a try. What should I paint I closed my eyes. Suddenly, I could imagine the blueness of the sky connected with the deeper, darker shades (色调) of the sea. I took a deep breath and began to draw.
I kept painting for the next few weeks. Whenever I felt stressed, I painted, and then I could forget all my troubles. I used my phone to take pictures of my paintings, so I could carry that feeling of peace with me. One afternoon, when I ran out of canvases (画布), I returned to the store to get some more.

46.Dear fellow students,
With the development of modern industry, the environment is becoming increasingly worse. It’s high time that we should take measures, or we would have nowhere to live. We students can protect our environment by living a low-carbon life.
Firstly, do turn off lights and other switches when not using them to save electricity. What’s more, if we go out, we should walk, ride or take public transport instead of driving. Finally, reusing paper and bottles in our daily life is also highly recommended.
Let’s make joint efforts to create a green and harmonious environment. I strongly believe that better world owes to the commitment and dedication of everyone.
47.Paragraph 1: The young man who had helped me before recognized me. “You’re back! ” he greeted me warmly and asked about my painting progress. You’ve really captured something special.” Encouraged by his words, I shared how painting had become my comfort during difficult times. He listened patiently, offering tips on new techniques and materials I could try. As I left the store with fresh supplies, I felt a sense of relaxation and confidence.
Paragraph 2: As my interest in painting grew, my daughter began to ask if she could join me. Her eager request filled me with joy and hope. I gladly agreed and set up a small easel for her beside mine. Painting together became our special family time, full of creativity and laughter. As we mixed colors and created images, I cheerfully noticed a positive change in Gabby’s mood. She seemed more energetic, even on days when her treatments were tough. I gradually realized that although life hadn’t gone according to my original plans, it had also brought some pleasant surprises.
