For years, I viewed my grandfather’s vineyard (葡萄园) as a chain tying me to a forgotten past. Every summer vacation felt like a sentence. The air smelled of damp earth and pesticide, a sharp contrast to the clean, digital scent of my city life. I counted down the days until my escape, the quiet countryside feeling not peaceful, but empty and slow.
The change began with the arrival of a young agricultural scientist, Miss Li, from the county’s new “Rural Revitalization” project. She brought not just new organic fertilizers, but a tablet full of colorful soil analysis charts. My grandfather listened with polite skepticism, doubting its effectiveness. I was surprised to find myself inspired. I began translating the technical terms on the tablet into our local dialect for grandpa, and explaining his decades of wisdom to Miss Li. A tiny spark (火花) of curiosity lit up where there was once only dullness.
One afternoon, a sudden hailstorm threatened the ripening grapes. Panic seized me — not for myself, but for the vines we had grown. Miss Li showed us satellite weather tracking on her phone, predicting the storm’s path. For the first time, I didn’t see technology as an enemy of this place, but as its friends. A fierce sense of protection, mixed with a new-found awe, warmed me from within. I was no longer just an observer; I got involved.
The autumn harvest was a success of this unlikely partnership. Grandfather placed a heavy hand on my shoulder. “This harvest,” he said, his voice thick with emotion, “has your mark on it.” A profound pride, deep and solid, settled in my chest. I finally understood that my growth wasn’t about escaping this land, but about enriching it. The vineyard was no longer my chain; it had become my canvas. In helping to revive its roots, I had discovered my own.
4. What did the author initially think of his summer at the vineyard
A. A meaningful lesson. B. A suffering burden.
C. An unforgettable memory. D. A peaceful journey.

D. Miss Li used technology to predict the storm’s path.
6. What changed the author’s view of the vineyard
A. Miss Li’s suggestion. B. His grandfather’s persuasion.
C. His role as an observer. D. His engagement in the vineyard.
7. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A. From Chain to Canvas: My Growth in the Vineyard
B. A Summer Escape: From City Life to the Countryside
C. An Exciting Success: the “Rural Revitalization” Project
D. The Lasting Conflict: Traditional Wisdom vs Modern Tech
C
Step inside most modern cars and instead of all the dials and switches you are likely to find a touchscreen. But, though touchscreens provide a convenient way to operate a lot of controls and settings, the latest research shows they can also make drivers less concentrated.
To discover how badly touchscreens distract drivers, Neale Kinnear and his colleagues at the Transport Research Laboratory arranged a series of experiments. They had two groups of 20 drivers. One consisted of regular users of Google’s Android Auto, a popular app which lets drivers interact with their phone through a car’s touchscreen. The others were supporters of Android Auto’s main competitor, Apple Car Play.
Each participant completed three 15-minute journeys along a set virtual route using the laboratory’s driving simulator (模拟装置). On one of these trips they had to carry out tasks using only the touchscreen. These tasks included navigating to a restaurant, playing a particular song, changing radio channels, and making a “hands-free” telephone call. On the second trip they had to do the same, but using only the car’s voice-activated controls instead. The third journey was a control, with no assigned tasks.
Whenever a red bar flashed on the windscreen the researchers measured how long it took a driver to react by pulling the indicator stick to flash the car’s lights. As they expected, drivers using touch controls on the screen took longer to respond to the flashing bar than those using voice controls. Though the difference might be less than a second, at motorway speeds this would result in an increased stopping distance of up to 25 metres.
Dr Kinnear was, however, surprised by the amount of time drivers’ attention was distracted by the series of glances needed to operate the screen. Among the worst outcomes were a mean of 20 seconds of cumulative glances using Android Auto to play a song, and of 16 seconds to set up the route to a restaurant with Car Play. For voice commands those means fell to 4 and 3 seconds respectively.
The researchers believe voice-activation is a safer alternative, but the software is expected to take less time to respond. Andy Peart of Artificial Solutions, a Swedish firm developing AI-assisted voice recognition, agrees.
8. How was the research carried out
A. By analyzing figures. B. By conducting questionnaires.
C. By consulting previous studies. D. By grouping experiment subjects.
9. What did the participants do during the second trip
A. They drove on a real road. B. They received random tasks.
C. They used only the touchscreen. D. They gave their cars voice commands.
10. Which of the following shocked Dr. Kinnear
A. Flashing bars were difficult to notice.
B. Using touchscreens was time-consuming.
C. Pulling the indicator stick required effort.
D. Driving speeds were very different on motorways.
11. What is Andy Peart’s opinion of the voice-activation app
A. It needs to be improved. B. It proves to be perfect.
C. It can never be replaced. D. It’s normally impractical.
D
What does it take to become the best at something The answer may not lie in early childhood excellence or in lifelong dedication. Instead, the path to becoming exceptional at a skill might involve a lot more.
That’s according to recent research published in Science that seeks to reveal what it takes to do extremely well in different performance areas, from sports to chess to classical music. Somewhat contrary to common sense, the study authors learned, people who showed the greatest promise in their field as children rarely went on to reach the peak of their field as adults.
The findings challenge the “10,000-hour rule”, the idea that if someone spends 10,000 hours deliberately practicing a skill, they will master it, says Purdue University psychologist Brooke Macnamara, who co-authored the analysis. The rule, which was popularized in Malcolm Gladwell’s 2008 book Outliers, is based on a 1993 study of top-performing violin students. These students had each accumulated an average of 10,000 hours of practice by age 20. Yet they were not world-class performers, Macnamara points out.
“Compared with their national-class fellows who are very good but not the best, world-class performers often started their field later,” Macnamara explains. These people tend to take part in multiple activities early on and don’t shine in one thing at a particularly young age. “They accumulate less practice in their field and more practice in other fields and then rise to the top relatively late,” she says.
The researchers highlight that the findings aren’t suggesting people don’t need to practice or put in effort to become the cream of the crop. Instead they show that top adult performers tend to be “late bloomers”, Macnamara says.
Boston University researcher Edson Filho, uninvolved in the study, notes that athletes in certain sports, such as gymnastics, hit peak performance far earlier in life than others. And this analysis, he adds, doesn’t get into other factors such as money and coaching that can influence who becomes the cream of the crop.
12. What do we know about the recent research
A. It corresponds with what is widely believed.
B. It explores the length of becoming an expert.
C. It highlights the natural talent in later success.
D. It shows young talents seldom become top-ranked.
13. What sets world-class performers apart from national-class ones
A. Early entry to a certain field. B. Former cross-field experience.
C. Enough practice accumulation. D. Signs of childhood excellence.
14. What does the underlined words “the cream of the crop” in paragraph 5 mean
A. A person of green diet.
B. A person of average level.
C. A person of outstanding ability.
D. A person of self-taught experience.
15. What is Edson Filho’s attitude towards the research findings
A. Supportive. B. Critical. C. Unclear. D. Neutral.

Art can often seem inaccessible because it has been stereotyped in popular culture as something that only particularly educated or wealthy people can enjoy. ____16____ Anyone can come to appreciate art with a little bit of time and effort. This article will introduce three practical methods to help you get started.

It is an instrument of war against brutality and darkness.”
____18____
If you’re looking at a painting, knowing what genre it belongs to can be helpful. The established and well-known genres are landscape, portraiture, genre paintings (which are paintings of scenes from ordinary life), history, and still life. Girl with a Pearl Earring (1665) by Johannes Vermeer is considered to be a masterpiece of portraiture.
Make Your Own Meaning.
Part of the fun of viewing art is that you get to come up with your own story about it! Art is very subjective, and artist statements or descriptive brochures can sometimes be misleading. ____19____ There is often not just one right answer. What’s important is that you make a genuine effort to dig meaning from their work.
____20____ So take your time. Let your preference unfold, and let the artwork speak to you. Enjoy the journey.
A. Find out the type of the painting.
B. It’s filled with anti-war symbolism.
C. Identify the genre through the painter’s life.
D. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth.
E. So even if your interpretation of a piece isn’t what the artist intended, it’s okay.
F. The more art you view, the more you will realize that all artworks are equally good.
G. As you view more art, you will develop an understanding of what you like and dislike.

My brother Jack was so smart that he earned a full scholarship to Harvard. I often wished he wasn’t so perfect because it made me feel like I had to work twice as hard just to prove myself to others. On the one hand, his success was a challenge that I enjoyed, but on the other hand, it was a huge amount of pressure that I struggled to cope with.
To balance his record in high school, I felt like I was constantly running on a treadmill (跑步机), devoting every moment to a non-stop race. There was no room for relaxation as I pursued that perfect record. My life seemed to be compressed into a series of endless tasks and deadlines. “I needed an A,” I repeated to myself before the biology test, so that I would maintain my perfect record and secure a place on the honor roll. I studied till the last minute of lunch and rushed to class. I felt a sense of confidence as I glanced over the first page of the test, quickly filling in the answers with a smile. However, as I turned to the last page, my mind went blank. Time ticked by, and soon, the classroom began to empty as students finished their tests and left, except me. “Lara, class ended. I need you to hand in your test,” Mrs. Phloem said, stretching out her hand. Unwillingly, I handed her the test paper.
The next day, I received my test back. I stared at the red mark in shock: 76. Not even a B minus, my mind screamed. Just average. It’s over. No perfect record. I felt an unprecedented (前所未有的) sense of frustration and disappointment. After school, I dragged my heavy feet back home. When I pushed open the door, Jack was sitting on the couch, reading. Seeing his leisurely state, I cried, hard to contain the jealousy (妒忌) and sadness in my heart. Jack immediately noticed the depression on my face. He asked with concern, “What’s wrong, Lara ” Blinded by frustration mixed with a touch of jealousy, I shouted at him, “How I wish you were not so perfect!”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
With a touch of hurt and surprise in his eyes, Jack gently approached me.

【答案】8. D 9. D 10. B 11. A

A. Supportive. B. Critical. C. Unclear. D. Neutral.

【答案】范文
With a touch of hurt and surprise in his eyes, Jack gently approached me. He placed a hand on my shoulder, and asked me again what had happened. I took out my test paper and told him that I would never match up to him in a choked voice. Jack’s smile grew warmer, and he gave my shoulder a reassuring squeeze. “You don’t have to measure up to anyone and your worth isn’t defined by grades or achievements. You’re more than just a number on a test. Remember to be yourself.”
His words blew my depression away and changed my mindset. I was still engaged in endless tasks and deadlines, but I no longer felt fenced in by my brother’s shadow. Realizing that comparison is the thief of joy, I strove for excellence instead of perfection, which is often unattainable and can lead to burnout. I felt a weight lifted off my shoulders as I realized that my value wasn’t tied to a single test score. I felt more confident and less overwhelmed as I know that believing in doing my best will always be the ultimate best score.
