①Do you know about pets’ feelings When is your dog happy A new app called Happy Pets can tell you the answer.
②The app can analyse (分析) the faces of cats and dogs. Then it can tell you what kind your pet is and how it is feeling. It can show you some feelings—happiness, anger, sadness and fear.
③Scientists in Australia made the app. The key to the app is facial recognition (人脸识别), a common use of AI. We can unlock our mobile phones with it. But this is the first time this technology has been applied to animals.
④How does the app work First, it analyses a picture of an animal. Then, it analyses the face of your pet. Is it a dog or a cat Next comes the most important thing—finding out the feeling of the animal. For example, if a dog shouts at you with its wagging (来回摇摆的) tail, it means the dog is happy enough and it loves you. If a dog closes its eyes and mouth while moving its ears back, this means the dog is afraid. When a dog is quiet and lies on the ground, it may feel sick or unhappy. To get this skill, the app “saw” and “read” a lot of example pictures before.
⑤Can the app tell us the feeling of pets exactly The scientists are sure about it. They also find that cats are more difficult to read than dogs. In the future maybe the app will analyse different sounds pets make.

What will our homes be like in the future Technology is changing our lives, and smart homes are becoming more and more popular.
In a smart home, many devices (装置) can be controlled by a central system. For example, you can use your smartphone to turn on the lights before you arrive home. You can also set the smart thermostat (恒温器) to adjust the temperature according to your daily schedule. This way, your home will always be at a comfortable temperature when you are there, and it can save energy when you are away.
Smart homes can also make our lives safer. Some smart homes have cameras and sensors. If a stranger comes near your home, the cameras will send a message to your phone. You can see what’s happening even when you are far away. Smart locks can also make it easier for you to enter your home. You don’t need to carry keys any more. You can open the door with a code or your fingerprint.
Moreover, smart homes are convenient for daily life. In the kitchen, smart devices can help you cook. A smart oven can cook your food according to the recipe you choose on your phone. A smart fridge can tell you what food you need to buy when something is running out.
However, smart homes also have some problems. For example, they can be quite expensive to set up. You need to buy many smart devices, and the installation (安装) may also cost a lot. Also, if there is a problem with the system, all the devices may not work properly. And there are also concerns about privacy (隐私). Most students like junk food because it is tasty. Whether it should be allowed in schools or not is still a question. It is important to look at it reasonably. 37
38 If a child forgets to carry a lunch bag, he or she will go hungry for most of the day. Here, junk food helps him or her to have something to eat. Moreover, it’s possible for students to save a lot of time.
Sometimes having junk food instead of a part of one’s main diet is considered to be OK. It doesn’t have a big influence (影响) on a person’s health if someone only eats it from time to time.
39 Some of them can’t be broken down in the body. If someone eats too much junk food, it will lead to obesity (肥胖) and other health problems like heart trouble, high blood pressure and so on.
Usually, children have snacks between classes. There is a sudden increase of sugar, so they get a lot of energy and become too active. 40 This causes low energy levels and lack of concentration (注意力). It has a bad influence on a student’s performance during classes.
In all, it’s important that parents and schools should provide their kids with healthy and balanced food and make them know the disadvantages of junk food. 41
A.But I think junk food also has some advantages.
B.Most junk food is quite cheap, tasty and easy to take.
C.So they will make healthier choices for themselves.
D.However, too much oil, salt and sugar in junk food are harmful to human bodies.
E.Junk food in schools has its good points and bad points.
F.But when classes begin, the effects (作用) of the snacks begin to reduce, and they become slow.

What did people do to communicate in ancient times Here are some very interesting answers to this question.
Alphorns (阿尔卑斯长号角) were once used to communicate in the mountains in Switzerland. They are very long and they are very heavy too. So, alphorns are hard work to blow. Then why did they use them Well, they make a loud sound which travels much farther than the human voice. Herdsmen (牧民) used them to call cows in the distance for milking. At sunset, alphorns were also used to send a message down to villagers that all was well. These days, they’re mostly used as musical instruments.
The people of La Gomera, an island in Europe, have their own special way of sending messages from mountain to mountain. They use a whistled (口哨的) language called el silbo, which comes from their language Spanish. Whistling can be heard within five kilometres, which means it can be used across much greater distances than shouting. El silbo can be used for all kinds of messages, including greetings and announcements. El silbo is used a lot less than it used to be, but primary school students in La Gomera have to learn it.
Did you know it’s also possible to send messages without making a noise This is called visual communication, and it includes the use of flags and even smoke. Long ago, soldiers along the Great Wall of China used smoke as a warning. If they noticed the enemy from their signal (信号) tower, they lit a smoky fire. When soldiers in other towers saw the smoke signal, they lit fires too. In this way, messages about the enemy’s arrival could travel as far as 800 kilometres in just a few hours.
