True friendship is like sound health;the value of it is seldom known until it is lost.
——Charles Caleb Colton
Just like in any other relationship, arguments and fights are also part of friendship. You will hardly find friends who have never fought with one another.Whatever the reason is,if a person feels that he or she is responsible for creating the differences,it is important that he or she should apologise to his or her friend.
Though you can use the email, text messages or chat online to express your apology, the good old way of saying sorry to your friend through a letter will surely have a great effect on him or her. This will make your friend realise that your efforts to say sorry are genuine (真的) and that you really care for him or her.
Points to remember:
Timing:Write the letter at the proper time.It is not advisable to put it off for too long.
Words:While you are writing the letter, what matters the most is that you truly feel sorry.
Sequence(顺序):Always begin by apologising and saying sorry for your fault. Then explain to him or her your side of the story. In the third and last paragraphs, talk about what his or her friendship means to you and make a promise not to repeat the mistake.
Delivery:You can either post the letter or deliver it personally or through someone else. You can also keep it at a location where your friend will be able to find it easily.
Some people may try to point out the friend’s mistake while writing the letter.Avoid this completely,as it can make matters worse. The letter has to be brief and should only talk about the subject that has led to your apology.Keep patient and do not expect immediate results. In some cases,it may take time for your friend to forgive and forget.

Do you compare yourself to other people Perhaps your best friend receives something you really want,or you’re not allowed to go to a concert but your brother or sister is.Even though comparisons are common and can sometimes be helpful, focusing on your own progress is important for your happiness.
“We often compare ourselves to others who are doing better or not as well as ourselves,” says Dr Jack.“But I suggest comparing who you are now to your past self and your future self. This can make you feel proud of what you’ve achieved and excited about what you might do.Focusing on your own purposes is more worthwhile than always trying to come out on top.”
Comparing yourself to those around you is natural and we often do it without realising it.It can help us to be clear about our achievements and to form friendships with new people who have similar interests. However,it’s important to remember that nobody is perfect in real life. It’s also important to take note of how the comparison is making you feel.“If you begin to feel quite low, focus on your own strengths,” says Jack.In other words, you can ask yourself questions like “What can I do well in ”,which can help you trust yourself.
Maybe here you are wondering “What if all my friends are better than me ”.Dr White says that jealousy (妒忌) is not bad but focusing on bettering your own work can help you feel just as successful. He also mentions that learning to celebrate your friends’ success can not only help to cheer your friends up but also help you feel good.It will encourage you to build each other up.

Good relationships are definitely good sources of happiness in life.We all want happy relationships but if we do not keep that relationship alive,it can also be one of the most upsetting things in life. There are no hard and fast rules in making good relationships,as each of us has different preferences and points of view as to what is a great relationship. The following are some key points in making relationships work.
It is often said that building good relationships is all about communication.Good communication indeed governs (影响) a good relationship—knowing the right thing to say,
when to say it,how to say it,and accepting some things that are better left unsaid.I personally think communication must be broadened because relationships involve more decisions to make. From study to work, from money to entertainment and even in things about yourself or about your friend that you do not know, communication is essential in these aspects of the relationships.
Of course, being with someone is not saying that you totally agree with him or her all the time. You and your friend come from different family backgrounds and are raised in different environments so there may be disagreements here and there. However,it is important to express disagreements without pushing the relationship to end.Again, good communication and learning to compromise at times are essential.
As the relationship lasts longer, you may also discover things about you and your friend that you may not have known before. Therefore, supporting each other in both your “hidden selves” can also make a good relationship.
Love is an important aspect of building relationships and for me,I always believe that love needs open communication, respect, support and understanding each other in making relationships work.

Jeffrey Hall,a teacher of Communications from the University of Kansas (KU),has used his research to define (明确) the exact amount of time necessary to make friends with someone. He’s also found how long it will take to deepen a relationship. His new study found that it takes around 50 hours of time together to go from being someone’s acquaintance (泛泛之交) to casual (感情不深的) friend. It takes about 90 hours to go from being casual friends to friends, and more than 200 hours before considering someone as a close friend or best friend.
But it isn’t spending just any kind of time together that deepens a friendship—hours spent working together, for example, don’t count as much as hours spent getting to know someone by hanging out, joking around, playing video games and doing more playful activities. The study explains that these kinds of activities help us to form a deeper connection with someone.“We have to put that time in,” Hall said.“You can’t make a friend without any effort.”
The results of the study come from analysis of 355 responses to an online survey from adults who said they had moved in the last six months and were looking for new friends in their new homes.Survey participants were asked about new relationships as well as hours spent together and activities they did. They were then asked to rate their resulting relationships according to one of four stages: acquaintances, casual friends, friends and close friends.
The main conclusion that Hall came to is that making close friends takes serious effort. So if you want to have some close friends, you have to know that spending more time with someone is the most important thing.

One of the most common mistakes in communication is trying to do too much.
36. There’s no value in delivering any kind of communication, whether written, spoken, formal, or informal, if the message doesn’t come across clearly.Being clear and brief — while maintaining interest and including everything your listeners need to know — is a high-level communication skill.
Here are some tips worth following in order to communicate more effectively.
●Keep your audience in mind.
Your audience will naturally be more interested and engaged when you tailor your communication to their interests.37. This will engage their desire to understand and interact with the information.
●Don’t use ten words when one will do.
Even the most engaged and committed audience will eventually get bored.Keeping your message simple and clear will make it easier for people to understand.38. However, they’re hearing it for the first time.Keep it simple.
●39.
If you’ve ever worked as an instructor, manager, trainer or coach, you’ll know that there are few better ways to learn new information than to teach it.Ask the audience to contribute their ideas or to take a role in explaining new concepts and policies to others.Allow them to lead discussions and meetings to develop their communication skills.
●Consider the best method to deliver your message.
If the information you’re communicating isn’t urgent, consider sending an email.Written communication will give your audience more time to review it, think it over and follow up with questions.40.
Building effective communication skills takes time, but the effects are worth the efforts.
[A]Be patient.
[B]Get the audience involved.
[C]The best messages are often simple.
[D]Speak directly to what matters to them.
E.You may be surprised by what your listeners offer.
F.It will also give them a handy record to refer back to.
G.As the speaker, you already know what you’re going to say.

It was a stormy night in July. The wind was strong, and the rain poured down. The thunder crashed overhead, and the lightning split the sky, casting horrible shadows.Alan was on his way home from his workplace — a garage, where you can get your car repaired. But now, he was held up at the bus station, his heart filled with anxiety. The bus to his home had been cancelled due to some reason. He had no idea how he was going to get home.
Alan tried to stop a passing taxi but failed. His clothes were completely wet, and his hair was sticking to his face.Carrying a bag of tools, Alan crazily looked around for any sign of hope, but the station was almost deserted.
Just when Alan was on the edge of total despair (绝望), he heard a kind voice.“Hey, do you need a ride ” Alan turned to see a man in an old taxi.Alan’s eyes lit up.
Alan jumped into the taxi and told the man where he would like to go.Then he tried to strike up a conversation by complaining about the bad weather to the driver. He added that the driver was a saviour (救星) for him.Smiling, the driver introduced himself as Chris and Alan introduced himself, too. Then Chris started the car.
But their journey was far from smooth. The roads were flooded in multiple areas, and Chris’ car struggled to move forward. At one point, they encountered a fallen tree blocking the road.Chris had to find another route, but every detour (绕路) seemed to lead to more problems. To make matters worse, the car suddenly started making strange noises and came to a sudden stop.
“Oh, my God! I’m sorry.I’m afraid we’ve got into a big trouble,” Chris said to Alan.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
True friendship is like sound health;the value of it is seldom known until it is lost.
