On a very hot day,an old couple set out for the hospital.On their return from hospital,the husband didn’t feel well.He managed to pull the car over to a stop at the roadside before he passed out (昏倒),leaving his terrified wife fearing for his life as he had a heart disease.
The woman,86,checked her phone to call for help,only to find the battery had died.Desperate for assistance,she got out of the car and began waving wildly at passers-by for help.For a while it seemed like no one was going to come to their rescue and then,almost out of nowhere,Shaun Smith approached them.
The 31-year-old had spotted the woman trying to flag someone down and decided to see what was wrong.He pulled over behind their car.Knowing what had happened to the old man,Shaun moved him into his own vehicle so he could use the air conditioning to cool him down.Shaun then called for an ambulance,but emergency services told them it would take up to four hours to get to them.
Knowing it could be dangerous for the old man,Shaun offered to drive them home and the ambulance would meet them there.The paramedics (医务人员) finally arrived and checked the old man over and he was feeling much better.They noted that if Shaun hadn’t stopped to help,things could have been much worse.
A post about Shaun’s heroic deeds has gone viral online,getting over 84,000 likes and more than 3,700 comments.The response to this has been overwhelming,said Shaun.He added,“To me,it was not really a big deal.And it feels like it has inspired a lot of people.It would be nice if people heard the story and then it made them think twice before driving past someone who’s in need.”

Even at 80,Mei Jingtian continues to watch over the Great Wall.
Living in a village near the Great Wall,Mei has a deep love for it.He still remembers that he usually ran and played hide-and-seek with his friends on this impressive structure when he was a child.However,when he returned to the village after working outside for years,he was surprised by the damage to the ancient wall.“Some villagers even took bricks from it to build their houses,” Mei said.
To help protect the wonder,Mei volunteered to walk along the wall each day to check its condition,encouraging other villagers to join him.“Of course,it might be dangerous to hike in the mountains by myself,so I always tap the grassy ground along the way with a wooden stick,scaring wild animals away,” Mei said.
In 2006,as head of the village,Mei helped set up a local volunteer protection group.Realising the importance of heritage protection,more and more villagers returned the bricks they had taken,and about 80 per cent of them joined as volunteers.To ensure that the volunteers could carry out their duties effectively,Mei arranged training programmes on basic protection and safety measures.Together,they conducted daily check-ups to track the condition of the Great Wall and reported any damage.
Encouraged by her father,Mei’s daughter followed him and officially became a Great Wall protector in 2019.“When I was a child,my father always told me his stories and talked about the history of the Great Wall,” Mei’s daughter said.“It is also my responsibility to protect the cultural heritage.”
The past ten years have seen Mei’s preservation efforts for the Great Wall.“It is my biggest wish to see heritage well-preserved and open to visitors,encouraging more people to join us in protecting the Great Wall,” Mei says.

I had just delivered a memorable speech,and I was about to learn how the judges decided my performance.The audience leaned forward and a period of silence fell across the room.I felt the drum roll in my heart.

I reworked my speech for the following year,but again I did not place.
I couldn’t accept the fact that I failed twice in something that I had worked so hard on,until I thought about many famous persons I knew.Never mind the lost prize money and praise—through learning stories from them,I discovered that I can fail successfully.
