When Gijsbert Cirkel coached his son’s soccer team, he remembered the kids resting under a tree after a game. They put their feet in the air and cried, “Our feet are hot!” Their games had been played on artificial turf (人工草皮), which can get so hot that it burns. To address this problem, Cirkel and his Dutch research team developed a new water storage system that cools the turf by using rainwater evaporation (蒸发).
As a hydrogeologist (水文地质学家), Cirkel studies the water cycle. His team’s new system collects and stores rainwater below a playing field. As this water evaporates, it cools the playing surface, similar to how sweat cools our bodies.Although natural grass is cooler, the new turf system does a better job of keeping the turf temperature down.On a hot June day, regular artificial grass is much hotter than natural grass, while the new turf system is only slightly warmer than the natural grass.
The new turf system looks like a sandwich. The artificial grass goes on top, followed by filler material, with the rainwater storage below it.The team included a waterproof liner and used fiber (纤维) filler instead of rubber to improve performance.Plastic blocks in the storage area have holes for water flow.
The researchers built four small fields in Amsterdam for outdoor tests — two with the new system topped by artificial turf and one with natural grass, while the last one had conventional artificial turf without water storage. The new system stored more rainwater and significantly cooled the surface.
“The new system represents a significant innovation,” says Vasilis Vasilou, a researcher in America. He likes the new idea, even though it doesn’t solve all the problems with artificial turf. For example, artificial grass may contain harmful chemicals that pose risks to players.

Agriculture has experienced great changes in the past few years. The agricultural productivity in China has reached new heights through digital technologies.
Breeding (培育) new and improved plant species is important to the agricultural industry.Phenotypic analysis (表型分析)—the process of measuring and analysing observable plant characteristics, helps to pick out the best types of plants that can adapt to different environments. However, phenotypic analysis is time-consuming in traditional crop breeding.Luckily, digital technologies have now expedited this process. It takes much less time to smartly get data mentioned above with 3D phenotypic analysis measurement technologies like radar.
In a strawberry greenhouse base in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, a single worker can now carry out fertilisation (施肥) and drop watering in over 100 mu of strawberries.Yao, a worker at the greenhouse, said that there’s a smart data collection station based on Agricultural Internet of Things, which could ensure fertiliser and water are put precisely to each single strawberry plant. Moreover, a station is also fixed in the greenhouse to monitor light, humidity and temperature in real time, creating a better environment for strawberries to grow.
How to better store and sell agricultural products is a key issue to farmers once the harvest is done.In Guizhou Province, there are warehouse companies that have introduced smart storage of agricultural products, through a digitalised management system and a quality control system. And Guizhou’s big data platform for agricultural products, covers vast vegetable production bases within the province, realising the capture and smart analysis of sales and price data.
Overall, relying only on labour is no longer how agriculture works, and the advances in technology are leading to a more productive modern agriculture system in China.

Honeybees can’t swim, and when their wings are wet, they can’t fly, either. But Chris Roh and other researchers at the California Institute of Technology found that when bees drop into bodies of water, they can use their wings to produce little waves and slide towards land—like surfers who create and then ride their own waves.
As with many scientific advances—Isaac Newton’s apple or Benjamin Franklin’s lightning bolt—Dr Roh’s experiment began with a walk. One day, when he was passing a pond, he observed a bee on the water’s surface producing waves. He wondered how an insect known for flight could push itself through water.
Dr Roh and his co-worker, Morteza Gharib, used butterfly nets to collect local honeybees and observed their surf-like movements. The researchers used a wire to restrict each bee’s bodily movement, allowing a close examination of their wings. They found that the bee bends its wings, pulling up water and producing a forward force.Bees get trapped on the surface because water is roughly three times heavier than air.But that weight helps to push the bee forward when its wings move quickly up and down. It’s a tough exercise for the bees, which the researchers guess could handle about 10 minutes of the activity.
The researchers said the surf-like movement hasn’t been documented in other insects and most semiaquatic (半水生的) insects use their legs for propulsion, which is known as water-walking.It may have evolved in bees, they predicted.
Dr Roh and Dr Gharib have imagined many practical applications for bees’ surfing. One plan is to use their observations to design robots able to travel across sky and sea.“This could be useful for search and rescues, or for getting samples of the surface of the ocean, if you can’t send a boat or helicopter, ” Dr Gharib said.

However, how do we handle the time we have saved Certainly not relax,or so it seems. We are so used to constant activity that we find it 50 to sit down and do nothing or even just one thing at a time.Perhaps the days are long gone when we might listen 51 to a story on the radio, letting imagination take us into another world.
There was a time 52 some people’s lives were devoted simply to the cultivation (耕作) of the 53 or the care of cattle. No multi-tasking (多重任务处理) there;their lives went on at a much gentler pace, and in a familiar pattern. There is much that we might envy about a way of life like this.Yet before we do so,we must think of the hard tasks our ancestors 54 .Modern machines have 55 people from that primitive existence.

第二节(满分25分)
  阅读下面的材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段话,使之构成一篇完整的
短文。
It was our turn to open our presents this particular Christmas morning. The living room was already covered with torn wrapping paper.Obviously, the children could hardly wait to discover the hidden treasures, which they had expected for nearly a month. Now we adults sat around the room with our presents at our feet, slowly removing the paper, trying to maintain our dignity in front of the children.
My wife,Brenda, and her family have a tradition of getting each other gag (恶作剧) gifts. This always makes me a bit uneasy at Christmas or on my birthday, never knowing what form of embarrassment lies waiting for me under the thin borders (边界) of the wrapping paper.
Recently,my six-year-old daughter Christy seemed to busy herself with something while I was playing computer video flight games. Now she was standing directly in front of me.The excitement of the moment just beamed (眉开眼笑) across her face.It was everything she could do to keep herself from helping me rip the paper from each present. Finally,I came to the last gift and with my natural ability,I concluded that this had to be the gag gift. With everyone looking on,I decided to go ahead and get it over with—just let them have their laugh—and I tore the paper and there it was...a toy airplane about two inches long. Our holiday guests started giggling to themselves as I looked up to my wife with an unpleasant smile on my face and blurted out,“A toy airplane Are you kidding me ”
Brenda gave me the look—that look always tells me I have just said something wrong and should have given it a second thought.I had failed to look at the name tag (标签) before I opened the present to see whom it was from.As I picked up the paper from the floor and read the name tag,my heart sank.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Paragraph 1:
On the tag were the letters that read,“To Dad,Love Christy”.
Paragraph 2:
Staring at the gift,I suddenly thought of a way to lift her up.
[情节构建]
情节线 情感线
Who I,my wife Brenda,my daughter Christy 高兴 尴尬 不开心 后悔 弥补
When On a Christmas morning
Where In the living room
What I received a “gag gift” and felt unhappy.
Conflict & Clue Conflict:①My wife,Brenda, and her family have a tradition of getting each other gag (恶作剧) gifts. ②As I picked up the paper from the floor and read the name tag,my heart sank. Clue:On the tag were the letters that read,“To Dad,Love Christy”.
Theme The mutual love between father and daughter
Para.1 On the tag were the letters that read,“To Dad,Love Christy”. Q1:When I saw the name tag,how was my feeling Q2:Why did I get so agonised Q3:What did I do when I found I misunderstood my daughter
Para.2 Staring at the gift,I suddenly thought of a way to lift her up. Q1:How did I deal with the toy plane Q2:When my daughter saw me playing with the toy plane, what did she do
  One possible version:
On the tag were the letters that read,“To Dad,Love Christy”.I felt so agonised and I saw her joy was replaced by a look of total embarrassment and humiliation. She must be praying that nobody would discover whom the gift came from. And it wasn’t a simple present because she knew I was fascinated with planes.I quickly knelt down and embraced Christy tightly, willing to give anything to take back those words.I explained I had thought it was from other people, but since it was a present from her that made it different. However, nothing said could remove the hurt in her heart.
Staring at the gift,I suddenly thought of a way to lift her up.I took that toy airplane in my hand and began making vivid airplane noises.I drove it taxiing along the “runway” and constantly accelerated it,which made it soon in the air.I put so much excitement into the toy airplane that other children wanted a turn to play with it.And I just like a little selfish kid said,“No,this is mine!” It wasn’t long before Christy believed it was really a charming gift and smiled again. Now,I keep the little plane as a reminder of my girl’s love and also, the power of words.

Modern inventions have speeded up people’s lives amazingly.Motor cars 41 160 kilometres in more than an hour, aircraft cross the world within a day, 42 computers operate at lightning speed.Indeed, this love of 43 seems never-ending.Every year motor cars are produced which go even faster and each new computer boasts (吹嘘) of 44 precious seconds in handling tasks.
All this saves time, but 45 a cost. When we lose or gain half a day in speeding across the world in an airplane, our bodies tell us so.We get the uncomfortable feeling known as jet lag (时差反应).Our bodies feel that they have been 46 behind in another time zone.Again, spending too long on 47 results in painful wrists and fingers.Mobile phones also have their dangers, according to some scientists;too much use may transmit (传播) harmful 48 into our brains,a consequence we do not like to 49 about.
