Natural Disasters
Big waves, massive eruptions and icy winds—these are just a few things that happen naturally and can quickly turn into disasters!Understanding disasters can help us stay safe and prepared.
Let’s learn about some common natural disasters!
Volcanic Eruptions
Think about a mountain with an opening at the top through which hot lava(岩浆),gases and ash burst. That’s a volcanic eruption!People living close to volcanoes must always be prepared in case of an eruption. In this way can they get away from flowing hot lava.Interestingly, volcanic eruptions can gradually form new land when they happen under the sea.
Tsunamis
Have you ever seen huge waves Imagine waves reaching dozens of metres high—that is how big tsunami waves can be!These waves are caused by underwater earthquakes. The waves are so fast and strong that they can sweep away people and buildings.
Blizzards
A blizzard is a snowstorm that includes low temperatures, strong winds and heavy snowfall. These dangerous conditions often lead to car accidents and can cause pedestrians to get lost.Additionally, the extreme cold also puts people at risk of frostbite (冻伤) or hypothermia (体温过低).
Droughts
When it does not rain for a very long time,it can cause a drought. In some areas, the soil becomes very dry and even the plants struggle to survive without water. This is awful because all living things—from crops to wildlife and humans—depend on water for survival.
There are many natural disasters on Earth and learning about them means we can be prepared when they occur.

The China International Search and Rescue Team (CISAR) was set up in 2001 and is now made up of several hundred rescue workers and about 20 police dogs. The team brings help and hope to those whose lives are changed by a storm, flood, earthquake,or any other natural disasters.
After long and careful training, the team went on its first international rescue tasks in 2003.That year, the Chinese team helped save lives after earthquakes in Algeria (阿尔及利亚) and Iran.It was the first time that a Chinese team had worked outside China whose members won high praise for bravery and skill.
Since then, the CISAR has completed many tasks. The list of people to whom help has been given is long. The team treated more than 3,000 people who were wounded in the 2006 earthquake in Indonesia, helped 2,500 wounded people after the earthquake that hit Haiti (海地) in 2010,and spent several months giving aid to over 25,000 people suffering from the 2010 floods in Pakistan. On 26 April 2015,a group of 62 people from CISAR went to Nepal after the 8.1-magnitude earthquake that happened there.
Rescue workers are trained to find people, treat wounds, and hand out food, water, and other supplies. They have to be able to do difficult work under very dangerous conditions. After a disaster, there is usually no electricity or water, and there may be diseases and other dangers.Rescue workers get to save lives, but they must also bury the dead. That means they have to be strong in both body and mind.
Rescue workers must have big hearts, too. It takes a lot of love and courage to risk one’s own life to save someone else’s.The members of the CISAR have plenty of both and are always ready to go wherever help is needed.

As an important part of our daily lives, music is increasingly being used in medical treatment.Music has proven very useful in cancer treatment, pain management and even post-stroke recovery.Researchers have been making great progress in using music to help patients with dementia (痴呆).It reduces patients’ anxiety and pain, lifts their spirits, and improves their cognitive (认知的) function in daily activities.
So why does music have such a powerful effect on people with dementia Several years ago, researchers discovered that when people listened to music, many areas of the brain took part in processing it.Research has also shown music might help the brain and its connections grow strong again. It is believed that music could help people with dementia by fixing or strengthening impaired neural (神经的) connections and cells.
It’s not just any music that has a great effect on the brain, though.Familiar and favourite music has been shown to have the biggest influence on the way we feel, and it is closely connected with memory and emotions. This is because listening to our favourite songs helps to produce feel-good hormones (荷尔蒙) that give us a sense of pleasure. After listening to favourite music, people with dementia experienced less pain and anxiety, and their general feelings improved.
Other researchers have even begun testing the effects of music training programmes to improve cognitive function for people with dementia. Results have been promising so far, with adults in the study showing improved condition, compared to those who took part in just physical exercise.
So,music is likely to continue to be a useful medical treatment for people with dementia. But based on current evidence,it’s important that the music comes from the patient’s own music collection and is used together with other medical treatments like medication.

Dogs have been humans’ best friends for thousands of years, and their ability to understand us goes far beyond just following orders.Dogs are really good at understanding how humans feel. They’ve learnt to pick up on words and facial expressions of humans.A study has shown that dogs can actually smell human stress and respond to it in ways that suggest a close relationship with us humans. This interesting discovery throws light on how deeply close our lives have become with our dog friends.
So,can dogs really smell stress The answer is yes!Researchers at the University of Bristol did a study in which they found that dogs can sense stress through a chemical called cortisol (皮质醇) in our sweat. This ability allows them to respond emotionally to human stress.
In the study,18 volunteers and their dogs took part. These volunteers went through public speaking and took tests of solving difficult math problems without any preparation.Their stress made more cortisol appear in their sweat. When the dogs smelled this stressed sweat, they felt less curious and showed less interest in the food bowls,as if they had thought there was no food in those bowls. It seems that dogs can really feel the stress of humans and their own feelings can be affected, too. This shows that humans and dogs have a very deep connection, where emotions can spread between us like a wave.
Then how did dogs develop such ability to sense stress Well,it might be because sensing stress helped dogs survive in the past.If they could tell when another member of their group was stressed, they knew they might be at risk.As the researcher said,“Being able to sense stress from another member of their group was likely beneficial.”

I lived in the State of Texas, where sudden storms often happen every year.Last Sunday, there was no dirt in the air, only bright spring sunshine and a clear blue sky. After lunch,Papa headed out to the field to check on the cattle while Mama started to prepare dinner.Everything seemed peaceful.Faye and I played happily in the yard. The heat had been building since dawn.Suddenly the temperature dropped—it felt cold.
Then Mama shouted from the house,“Iris, you and Faye get inside, real quick now!” I looked to the west and saw a huge black cloud of dust, like thick smoke from a railway engine’s chimney. All the birds flew away. The stop lights nearby weren’t working because of a power failure.
“Faye,go with Mama!” I shouted.“I’ll warn Papa.”
Faye ran towards the house. The storm hit so fast that I hardly saw her climb the steps. In a short time, the day turned into night.I screamed for Papa, hoping my voice would lead him back. But I couldn’t hear or see him at all.
Some house roofs were blown off,and small trees down.I thought a terrible storm was on the way and the scene was the worst I’ve seen in several years. The dirt and sand stung (刺痛) my face like a thousand bees.I needed to get to shelter.Covering my face with one hand,I made my way towards the car and opened the door.Dirt flew in with me as I pulled the door closed.Papa was still out somewhere! I needed to help him find the car.
I searched the dashboard (仪表板) and found the switch for the front lights. They made some rays, but would Papa see them in the thick darkness I pushed the horn (喇叭) again and again, hoping Papa would hear it.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Paragraph 1:
Suddenly,Papa’s face appeared at the window.
Paragraph 2:
Papa shut off the car’s lights and I worried the dirt would bury us. 核心素养提升(Unit 6)

第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Natural Disasters

  One possible version:
Suddenly,Papa’s face appeared at the window. My heart jumped with surprise and relief. He opened the door and climbed onto the seat next to me.He coughed, wiped his eyes with dirty hands, and then pulled me into his arms. “Oh,Iris, you’re safe.” I hugged Papa and cried.I could feel the tears streaming down my dirty cheeks.Papa looked into my face,“Your mother and Faye ” I said,“They are in the house.” Papa nodded,“Good. We’ll wait out the storm here.”
Papa shut off the car’s lights and I worried the dirt would bury us.Luckily, the wind died down and the dust .Papa kicked against the door, opening it far enough to let us out, removing the dust. We went home as Mama .“Mama!” I shouted and ran into her arms.“Oh,my precious Iris!” Mama cried.“You and Papa are safe!”“I’m safe thanks to Iris,” Papa said,“The car’s horn led me to shelter.”“I’m so proud of you,” Mama said to me.I cried even more, with tears of joy because my family had survived the horrible
