(2022 新高考Ⅰ卷,阅读B)Like most of us, I try to be mindful of food that goes to waste. The arugula (芝麻菜) was to make a nice green salad, rounding out a roast chicken dinner. But I ended up working late. Then friends called with a dinner invitation.I stuck the chicken in the freezer. But as days passed, the arugula went bad.Even worse, I had unthinkingly bought way too much; I could have made six salads with what I threw out.
In a world where nearly 800 million people a year go hungry, “food waste goes against the moral grain,”as Elizabeth Royte writes in this month’s cover story. It’s jaw-dropping how much perfectly good food is thrown away — from “ugly” (but quite eatable) vegetables rejected by grocers to large amounts of uneaten dishes thrown into restaurant garbage cans.
Producing food that no one eats wastes the water, fuel, and other resources used to grow it.That makes food waste an environmental problem. In fact, Royte writes, “if food waste were a country, it would be the third largest producer of greenhouse gases in the world.”
If that’s hard to understand, let’s keep it as simple as the arugula at the back of my refrigerator.Mike Curtin sees my arugula story all the time — but for him, it’s more like 12 boxes of donated strawberries nearing their last days.Curtin is CEO of DC Central Kitchen in Washington, D. C. , which recovers food and turns it into healthy meals.Last year it recovered more than 807,500 pounds of food by taking donations and collecting blemished (有瑕疵的) produce that otherwise would have rotted in fields. And the strawberries? Volunteers will wash, cut, and freeze or dry them for use in meals down the road.
Such methods seem obvious, yet so often we just don’t think.“Everyone can play a part in reducing waste, whether by not purchasing more food than necessary in your weekly shopping or by asking restaurants to not include the side dish you won’t eat,” Curtin says.

(2026 浙江宁波二模)My fingers trembled as I signed the pre- medical application form. The watercolor brushes on my desk stared back at me like abandoned friends.I’m Lora, an 18-year-old who secretly drew brain diagrams on napkins while classmates drew cartoons.“Art feeds the soul but starves the body,” Mom always said. Her words haunted me as my biology textbooks slowly buried my drawing pads.

Then came the school career fair that changed everything.
Dr.Eleanor Whitman from Harvard asked us to list our “hidden skills”.My hand shook as I wrote “observing details” — something I’d learned from painting flower petals.“That’s medical research’s most needed skill!” she exclaimed, sharing how a student turned microbiology notes into textbook illustrations. My lab partner whispered, “Remember our photosynthesis (光合作用) comic?” For the first time, my two worlds didn’t feel so separate.
The real surprise came during hospital volunteering.Watching surgeries, I noticed something — the steady hands of doctors reminded me of my brushwork. When a boy struggled to describe his pain, I drew a fire-breathing dragon on his cast.“You made medicine speak,” the nurse said.Slowly, my drawing pads filled with cells that looked like colored-glass art and X-rays arranged like abstract paintings.
Mr Dawson, our career counselor, helped connect these dots.On his whiteboard, my medical knowledge and art skills overlapped in a bright yellow circle labeled “Medical Illustration”.He showed me job listings I never knew existed — graphic designers for science apps, 3D modelers for anatomy (解剖) classes.“Your ‘impractical’ skill makes you stand out,” he said, pointing to my dragon drawing now used in pain management workshops.
Today, my microscope and paintbrushes share the same desk. The same hands that once hesitated between them now create 3D models of viruses for vaccine (疫苗) education.Sometimes I teach young patients to draw their feelings instead of describing them.My story isn’t about heart and reality canceling each other out — they just multiply possibilities.

(2026 河南省濮阳模拟)Malaria (疟疾) causes more than 600,000 deaths each year, and is just one of numerous deadly human diseases transported by mosquitoes. But what if we could make our blood poisonous to the mosquitoes? While it sounds like science fiction, the idea isn’t as incredible as it might sound.
In a study published in the journal Science Translational Medicine, scientists report that a drug known as nitisinone (尼替西农) can turn human blood so poisonous to mosquitoes that they die within a few hours of feeding on samples from patients who received even a small amount. What’s more, the drug remains effective for up to 16 days.
It’s important to note that nitisinone itself does not protect against malaria infection. However, by killing the mosquitoes before they can lay eggs, the drug might be able to knock down disease-spreading mosquito populations to the point that it breaks the chain of infection.
Like a vaccine that relies on herd immunity (群体免疫) then, the potential isn’t in being individually immune to malaria, but rather working together as a community to prevent an outbreak.
While the researchers caution that such a tool is not intended to fully eradicate diseases that mosquitoes spread, it may prove helpful in working with other strategies, such as malaria prevention drugs, and vaccines themselves. The new tool might prove especially effective in areas where mosquitoes have already developed resistance to other treatments.
The drug is already approved by Food and Drug Administration (FDA), because it’s used to treat rare genetic diseases.Inspired by a poison in the Australian bottlebrush plant, nitisinone was originally intended for use as a weedkiller. It worked by targeting an essential amino acid known as tyrosine.A family of rare genetic disorders occur when the body can’t properly deal with that same amino acid.Researchers found that nitisinone could be an effective treatment, so the US FDA approved it for use in humans in 1992.

(2026 广东广州三模)The UK government finds itself at a crossroads, with tech companies urging it to loosen copyright laws. These firms argue that by giving AI systems unrestricted access to online content — free from the need to pay or seek permission — the nation could unlock economic growth. For a country eager to compete in the global tech race dominated by the US and China, the appeal is undeniable.Yet, this path may come at a cost.
Tech companies have long viewed copyright as a barrier.A few years ago, the Intellectual Property Office suggested an exception for data mining, claiming it would draw tech investment.Though the proposal was not adopted, the idea stays. The current government’s consultation on AI and copyright is too favorable to big tech.
Existing law clearly safeguards the rights of original works, from art to journalism, against unauthorized copying. The principle that original material cannot be ripped off and that creative people have rights over their work is widely understood and accepted. However, big tech often bypasses these rules, much like how US social media giants built their empires on content created by others.Creative individuals and smaller businesses are struggling to keep pace, most in danger of being left behind.
While the promise of technological advancement is hard to resist, the UK must weigh its options carefully.Artists such as Elton McCartney and Paul Clemence have been vocal in their defense of human creativity, and the House of Lords has taken steps to ensure that licenses for copyrighted material are actively sought.Ministers, dazzled (眩晕) by the prospect of new data centers and a seat at the AI table, should pause to reconsider their priorities. After all, big tech should not be given more rights over others’ work than the rest of society.

  14. This means bringing older and younger people together to help each other out. After all, older people are a huge untapped resource — many are retired doctors, engineers, teachers, or business owners with a wealth of experience.Young people, on the other hand, have their own strengths, especially when it comes to using modern technology.By sharing their time and skills, both sides gain something meaningful — older adults feel more connected and useful, while young people get support, guidance, and often a fresh perspective on life.15.
In some programs, retired volunteers visit primary schools to listen to kids read and give them one-on-one support.Similar programs also exist in secondary schools and even universities.Other projects send children or teenagers into retirement homes regularly — to teach digital skills, entertain the residents, or simply keep them company and hear their stories.16. These students may live rent-free in exchange for helping with chores and offering support, or they pay less rent while checking in regularly and having friendly chats with their older housemates.
These intergenerational projects have made a real difference.By connecting people from different age groups and backgrounds, they help build trust, mutual respect, and lasting friendships.17.
A. It’s a truly win-win for everyone involved.
B. These are important for a connected society.
C. At the same time, many young people face their own struggles.

(2026 广东佛山二模)Wildfires are getting worse across the world.Twenty-one years of satellite data shows severe fires have more than doubled in frequency since 2003 and the six most extreme years since records began have come since 2017, causing more deaths and destruction.
One European Union (EU) pilot program, the Life Landscape Fire Project (LLFP), is now using hungry mountain goats to prevent wildfires before they start. It involves a combination of controlled fires and hungry goats grazing (吃草) to reduce plant cover that can dry up in summer and fuel the rapid spread of fires.Controlled fires help burn older plants that goats don’t eat, allowing fresh green vegetation to grow which grazers like goats and cows do eat.The experimental project pays shepherds (牧羊人) to guide their goats to areas where they want the plant cover reduced, and they also build shelters and watering areas to attract free grazers to the desired spots. That’s how mountain goats and cows become mobile fire prevention units.
LLFP Director Andre Mota oversees this EU-funded project.“We are in one of the most affected regions by wildfires, historically speaking,” said Mota.“Last September we had a wildfire with extreme behavior that burned almost everything in its path. But our parcels managed to keep green.” A video from Mota showed that one half of the mountain was black and burned and the other green, the parts which controlled fires and hungry goats had made unlikely to burn.“We believe this proves that, when scaled up from a pilot project to a full solution, it works,” he added.
The sound of goat bells rings out as the goats move peacefully on their way, offering hope in a region directly in the path of climate chaos.
