Instead of boring grammar worksheets (语法活页练习册), Class 8 students got an exciting task. The task asked them to plan a one-day trip to the City Museum and make a simple English guidebook. Their teacher Mr. Smith called it a “Project-Based Learning” (PBL) challenge. He said it would help them use English in real life.
At first, the students were worried. “How do we start ” asked Chen Yu, who was a quiet student. Mr. Smith smiled, “Work together and find the way yourselves.”
The teacher divided the class into three groups. The research group looked for information about the dinosaur (恐龙) show on the website. The design group drew simple pictures to make the guidebook nice. The language group wrote clear introductions and checked the English many times for foreign visitors.
They had some small problems and argued with each other at first. With Mr. Smith’s help, they learned to talk nicely and make peace finally. When they showed their guidebooks to the museum director, Mr. Li, he was surprised. “These are better than our official (官方的) ones!” he said.

When mountains, rivers and something else block the view, you may wonder whether there is still a road ahead. Be positive. Chinese people will use two common sayings to tell you that there is always a road ahead.
One of the sayings comes from a book called Civilian Mottos from Ancient China (《增广贤文》). It was published around the late 16th century. It says, “When a chariot (马车) arrives in front of a mountain, there's always a road there; when a boat floats towards a bridge, it will naturally go, straight.”
The meaning here is that when you drive a chariot to a mountain, there must be a road you can take to go forward, and water currents (水流) will naturally straighten a boat when it goes to pass under a bridge. In more common language: Don’t worry about what’s going to happen in the future because things will work themselves out.
The second saying is two lines from a poem written by Lu You, a great Southern Song Dynasty historian and poet. The two lines are translated as, “Mountains multiply, streams (小溪) double back and I doubt if there’s any road; willows cluster darkly, blossoms shine, and another village suddenly appears ahead.” In easier language: Don’t lose hope, and there’s always a way.
These popular expressions are often used to offer comfort and encouragement to people in difficult times and to encourage people to face the world calmly. There is a Western saying that follows the same idea, “When God closes one door, he opens a window.”
