Shortly after 11 a.m.on New Year's Day 2024,61-year-old Lynn William Segebart, stopped at a Palm Springs gas station near his Lantana home to buy bottled water for the upcoming workweek. While waiting in the checkout line with a few other customers,he heard sharp screams coming from outside the store. The other people in the station either didn't catch the noise or chose to ignore it,but Segebart immediately set down the water and hurried out to check what happened.
What he saw horrified him:a young man was being hurt by a stranger at the gas pumps. The victim was 21-year-old Enrique Velasquez, who had been refueling his blue car when 43-year-old Jose Juan Miranda,a man he had never met, attacked him with a 6-inch toothed knife, hurting his face and body crazily.Velasquez tried to step back in fear, tripped over the gas pipe and fell to the ground, yet Miranda kept attacking him violently without stopping.
Segebart,a thin man only 5-foot-5 tall, rushed forward without hesitation and grabbed Miranda's right wrist tightly with both hands, despite Miranda being noticeably larger and stronger. With Segebart holding Miranda back firmly, the badly wounded Velasquez, bleeding heavily from his face and body, managed to drag himself away to a safe place.Bystanders, who had stood frozen in shock at first, soon came to help hold Miranda down until the police arrived at the scene a few minutes later.
Velasquez was quickly sent to a local hospital for emergency surgery and survived luckily.Doctors and the police both confirmed that Segebart's quick and brave action saved his life.Segebart, who had never been in a fight in his life, played down his courage, saying any decent (正派的) person would do the same thing.Later,he was honored with the Citizen Hero Award by the local police department.Fully recovered,Velasquez later visited Segebart in person, tearfully calling him his guardian angel and thanking him endlessly for his unselfish help.

A new study has found evidence that horses can smell fear in humans' sweat and that it causes them to feel the same emotion.People have believed for many years that horses can "smell fear," and riders are often told to relax in order to keep their horse calm.Past studies have found that horses pick up human emotions from our facial expressions and voices.Recently,a team of researchers set out to see if horses can discover people's emotions from smell alone.
In the study,30 people were asked to watch video clips of happy scenes while cotton pads (棉片) under their arms collected their sweat. Then, with new pads under their arms, they watched a scary film.
The researchers then divided 43 horses into three groups. The animals wore devices called muzzles (鼻罩) that fit over their nose and mouth. One group was given a muzzle with a pad of happy sweat in it,one group received a pad from the scared people, and the third group had a clean, untouched pad.
The team tested the horses to see how they reacted to unexpected events, such as an umbrella being opened near them or an unfamiliar object being placed in front of them.Horses that wore the "fear" muzzle acted more scared.Their hearts beat faster, they were more likely to be surprised, and they were less likely to be curious about the new object or approach humans.
"The fearful smells from humans make the horses' reactions stronger," lead study author Plotine Jardat told CNN. "The significance is that horses can smell how we feel, even if they can't hear or see us."
The researchers hope that understanding horses' emotions better can help people interact more positively with the animals and improve horse health and happiness.Stressed or scared horses often react with behavior that can be dangerous, such as kicking or running away,so knowing the importance of remaining calm can also keep humans safer around these sensitive creatures.
8.How did researchers collect human sweat in the study?______
A. By letting people watch videos.
B. By asking people to exercise hard.
C. By letting people stay relaxed.
D. By asking people to touch horses.
9.What can be inferred from paragraph 3 and 4?______
A. Happy sweat calmed horses down.
B. Scary sweat made horses more fearful.
C. Untouched pads raised horses' curiosity.
D. Clean pads surprised horses easily.
10.What is the significance of the study?______
A. It helps humans control horses' emotions freely.
B. It helps train horses to avoid dangerous behaviors.
C. It helps horses get used to unfamiliar circumstances.
D. It helps promote positive human-horse interaction.
11.What is the best title of the text?______
A. Horses are sensitive to sounds. B. Horses are emotional creatures.
C. Horses can smell a person's fear. D. Horses behave in different ways.

The UK's first geothermal (地热的) power station has recently started working in Cornwall,England.Geothermal energy is a kind of sustainable energy, just like solar and wind power, which will never be used up.Geothermal Engineering Ltd (GEL),the company that manages the power station, says it can provide electricity for up to 10,000 homes.
Geothermal energy comes from the extreme heat deep under the Earth's surface. To get this heat,GEL drilled the deepest well in the UK.The project took nearly 20 years to prepare and cost about 50 million.
The new power plant injects water three miles down into the well it created, where the temperature is about 200℃.As the water travels through hot rock,it is heated up and then pumped back to the surface. The water, now heated to around 190℃,creates intense pressure from steam. This is used to turn big wheels, which generate electricity. The water is then cooled before being pumped back underground to start again. The power is being sold to energy company Octopus Energy, which will use it to power homes.
Besides electricity, the plant also produces lithium (锂) a valuable metal used to make batteries. It is the UK's first large-scale lithium producer, and GEL says taking lithium from the water here won't produce carbon dioxide,a gas that causes climate change. At first,it will produce 100 tonnes of lithium every year, and GEL plans to increase this gradually to 18,000 tonnes, which is enough to make 250,000 electric vehicle batteries.
Ryan Law,GEL's founder, told the BBC the plant is important for the UK's energy supply. It is not only renewable but also reliable — unlike wind and solar power,it provides electricity 24 hours a day.He also pointed out that the price of its electricity will stay steady, different from fossil fuels whose prices go up and down.GEL plans to build more such plants in Cornwall.
12.What is geothermal energy?______
A. A kind of renewable energy that never runs out.
B. A fossil fuel with unstable and different prices.
C. A metal used to make electric vehicle batteries.
D. A new power station built in Cornwall,England.
13.What is the function of the heated water around 190℃?______
A. To clean the deep well in the new power plant.
B. To cool down the hot rock three miles down.
C. To extract rare metal from underground water.
D. To create steam pressure to produce electricity.
14.What is the disadvantage of the geothermal power station?______
A. It usually produces a large amount of carbon dioxide.
B. Its preparation takes a long time and costs much money.
C. It cannot reuse water in the power-generation cycle.
D. It can only produce electricity and no other products.
15.What is Ryan Law's attitude to the power plant?______
A. Objective B. Unconcerned C. Favorable D. Critical

38. I've loved playing the guitar since I was twelve years old.It has long been my dearest hobby and the best way to relax after heavy schoolwork.Every day after coming home,I would lock myself in my bedroom and practise basic chords and simple songs for hours, losing myself in the soft music. However,my father never seemed to understand or support my passion.Whenever he heard the guitar sound,he would knock at my door gently, reminding me to focus more on my study instead of wasting time on useless entertainment.
Last week,I saved my pocket money and bought a delicate black guitar pick (拨片) printed with my favourite band's logo.I treasured it so much that I always placed it beside my guitar on the desk. One evening, when I returned home from school,I suddenly found my precious pick broken into two pieces. My father was sitting quietly in the living room, reading a newspaper.Without thinking twice,I firmly believed he had destroyed it on purpose out of dislike for my hobby.
Filled with anger and disappointment,I shouted at him bitterly and refused to listen to any of his explanations.I rushed back to my room, slammed the door heavily, and put my guitar away in the corner.During the following three days,we kept silent with each other and avoided talking face to face.Every time I saw the broken pick,I felt sad and wronged.
This afternoon, staying alone in my room,I missed playing the guitar badly, yet my pride stopped me from making up with my father. When I stood up to fetch a storybook from the shelf,a small unexplored box fell out from between the pages.Curious and confused,I stared at it,wondering where it came from and what secret it hid inside.

37.【答案】Dear Toy,
I'm glad to hear your club will hold a Chinese culture activity next month.I strongly recommend the Chinese Paper-cutting Workshop.
Compared with calligraphy,paper-cutting is easier to learn. It only requires paper and scissors, which are cheap and easy to get.Besides, the beautiful patterns like flowers or animals can be finished quickly, bringing participants a strong sense of achievement. What's more,it carries rich cultural meanings and finished works are easy to display.
I believe this workshop will attract more students and make your activity a great success.I hope my suggestion helps and feel free to ask for help if needed.
Yours,
Li Hua
38.【答案】 I sat down on my bed and slowly opened the small box.Inside lay a shining new guitar pick, exactly like my broken one, with a warm note written in my father's familiar handwriting.Reading its gentle words, all my long-held misunderstanding died down completely.I finally realized he had always cared about my love for music, secretly preparing this gift and looking for helpful learning materials online.Strong shame flooded my heart for my rude words and the cold silence I had kept between us for days.
I held the new pick tightly and walked out to my father in the living room.Seeing me approach,he looked a little nervous,as if still worrying about our cold relationship.I lowered my head and said sorry sincerely for my unreasonable behaviour. He smiled softly and patted my shoulder warmly, saying he would always support my passion as long as I kept a good balance between study and hobbies. From then on,soft guitar music often filled our home, carrying the quiet but deep love between father and son.
