Michael and his wife, new residents of a San Francisco apartment, learned about their neighbor Jeff Dunan’s
volunteer work for Bangladesh Relief, an organization that provides food, clothing and essential supplies for
disadvantaged people in northern Bangladesh. Inspired, Michael donated $150 to Dunan’s GoFundMe campaign.
However, a message from his credit card company informed him of an unintended $15,041 charge.
When he saw the five-figure number, he was confused, but he soon realized what had happened. Since
Michael’s credit card number starts with 4 and 1, it was apparent that he had accidentally begun typing his card
number while the cursor (光标) was still in the donation amount box.
Michael planned to call Dunan to explain the mistake. However, before he could, he was flooded with
Facebook messages from Shohag Chandra, the charity’s Bangladesh-based program manager, thanking him for his
incredible generosity. Michael’s heart felt heavy as he paged through photos of people holding thank-you signs
with his name on them. The idea of taking back such a significant donation weighed heavily on him. However,
after receiving the refund, he decided to donate a generous $1,500.
Although Michael had already shared the story with friends and family, he felt a strong need to post it publicly
after learning from Dunan that the organization was in its greatest need of funds. “The least I could do,” Michael
said, “was share my story and hope it might inspire others to support the cause.”
However, Michael had no idea that his story would be shared far and wide. It went on to raise over $120,000
for Bangladesh Relief in just a few weeks-about eight times his mistaken donation. According to Dunan, Michael’s
post inspired contributions from more than 3,700 people. Michael was amazed by the ongoing wave of generosity.
“Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine this,” he said. “It’s amazing what people can achieve when they come
together.”

A. He made a mistake with the donation amount. B. He encountered a system error.
C. He was greatly inspired by Dunan. D. He entered wrong credit card details.
42. Why did Michael feel very sorry according to Paragraph 3
A. The manager sent too many messages. B. He thought his donation was too small.
C. He found the refund process difficult. D. He had to disappoint people who thanked him.
43. Why did Michael put his story online for everyone to see
第 7页/共 16页
A. Dunan asked him to spread the word. B. He wanted to become famous himself.
C. His family and friends told him to do it. D. He learned the group badly needed money.
44. What happened after Michael shared the story online
A. Many people saw it and decided to help.
B. He became very well-known in his own city.
C. It helped his neighbor Jeff start a new helping activity.
D. He and his neighbor Jeff became much better friends.
45. What is the main lesson of the story
A. Actions speak louder than words. B. Many hands make light work.
C. Always prepare for a rainy day. D. Well begun is half done.

In the Hollywood movie The Martian, actor Matt Damon plays an astronaut who grows food on Mars (火星)
to survive alone on the red planet.
After seeing the movie, Washington State University physicist Michael Allen and University of Idaho food
scientist Helen Joyner decided to carry out a case study helping students figure out how to farm on Mars. In the
case study, students had to imagine they were mining on Mars and decide how to feed themselves there before
starting on the journey. They got advice from Allen and Joyner on how to select crops and take the challenges of
growing crops over long periods on Mars. Students used a scoring system to select three foods to plant on Mars.
Allen found the results impressive: among 30 students, “no two people have ever gotten the same answer”, he
said.
Human travelers to Mars will likely have to make use of resources on the planet rather than take everything
they need with them on a spaceship. This means farming their own food on another planet, one that has a very
different ecosystem (生态系统) from Earth’s.
One problem for those who would like to live on Mars is the fact that there can be no farming tools. Like real
astronauts, students taking part in the study cannot take farming tools with them. As Joyner put it to his student
astronauts, “You are starting with nothing.” Besides, students also have to deal with a very limited choice of diet.
“If you had to eat a single food for the rest of your life, could you do it ” Joyner asked.
But Allen believes the case study is about more than farming and eating on the Red Planet. “I’m not teaching
about growing food on Mars,” Allen said. “I’m teaching about living with choices. I’m teaching about problem
solving.”
第 8页/共 16页
46. What gave Michael Allen and Helen Joyner the idea for their case study
A. A famous book about space travel.
B. Their work as university teachers.
C. Planning for a real journey to Mars.
D. A movie about farming on Mars.
47. What did the students have to do in the case study
A. Start their task with all necessary equipment.
B. Experiment with different farming tools.
C. Select three types of food to grow on Mars.
D. Watch the movie The Martian before starting.
48. What might be the difficulties for people living on Mars
A. They have a limited choice of diet.
B. They have a lot of farming tools.
C. They have to take part in the study.
D. They have to select crops on Mars.
49. What does Michael Allen say the students really learn from this study
A. How to grow food in a garden. B. How to think and find answers.
C. More facts about our planet Earth. D. How to find things to eat on Mars.
50. What is the passage mainly about
A. A plan for living alone on Earth. B. The story from a movie about space.
C. A class project on food for Mars. D. The work of two school teachers.

breakthroughs and advancing knowledge.
Take Marie Curie as an example. Despite facing numerous challenges, she persisted in her research on
radioactivity and discovered radium and polonium. Her dedication and courage not only earned her two Nobel
Prizes but also paved the way for future scientific advancements.
Let’s take action now! Let’s be inspired by scientists like Marie Curie and strive to cultivate these qualities in
ourselves. By doing so, we can contribute to the progress of science and make our world a better place.
