Journey to the West
by Wu Cheng’en
Journey to the West is a famous Chinese fantasy. Tang Sanzang travels from China to India to get special books. He has three partners with magical powers: the smart and strong Monkey King, the funny and lazy Zhu Bajie, and the quiet Sha Wujing. On their way, they face many dangers. The story shows us how to be brave, keep going, and do good things.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (1997) by J. K. Rowling (1965– ) is a fantasy novel about a young boy who goes to a special school for magic. Rowling wrote much of the book in a café in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was rejected(拒收) by several publishers(出版社) before finally being published. There are seven novels in the Harry Potter series. So far, they have sold over 600 million copies worldwide, making them the best-selling book series of all time.
The Time Machine
The Time Machine (1895) by H. G. Wells (1866–1946) is a science fiction novella (a short novel) about a scientist who invents a machine that takes him to the year 802,701. The book popularised the idea of time travel, which is still a popular theme(主题) today. Wells is regarded as(被视为) the “father of science fiction”, writing more than 50 novels and dozens of short stories, including The Invisible Man (1897) and The War of the Worlds (1898).
The Final Problem
The Final Problem (1893) by Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) is a short story featuring the detective Sherlock Holmes. Holmes has great skills of reasoning and deduction(推理), solving many crimes(犯罪) with his friend Dr Watson. He appears(出现) in four novels and 56 short stories. The character was very popular at the time and still is to this day. Doyle’s stories have been published many times in different languages and adapted into TV shows and films.
The Three-Body Problem
The Three-Body Problem is a famous Chinese sci-fi novel by Liu Cixin. It begins when a secret project sends a signal(信号) into space. An alien civilisation on a planet receives it and decides to come to Earth. As the aliens get closer, humans face a huge crisis(危机). Scientists around the world work together to understand the aliens and save humanity(人类). The story is full of mystery, science, and big ideas about the universe(宇宙). It makes you think: are we alone in space, and what happens if we're not
Around the World in Eighty Days
Around the World in Eighty Days (1872) by Jules Verne (1828–1905) is an adventure novel, where the main character, Phileas Fogg, attempts to(尝试) circumnavigate(环绕航行) the world in 80 days to win a bet. The journey is undertaken by train, steamer(汽船), and even elephant! The novel was a great success, following the other successes of Journey to the Centre of the Earth (1864) and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870). Verne also wrote plays, short stories, and many other works, and is also considered the “father of science fiction”.

Can you name the different types of novel
A novel is a made-up story that is usually long and a bit complex(复杂的). It uses imagination(想象) to talk about people’s lives, often through a series of events. There is also a non-fiction type of novel, which tells the stories of real people and true events, while using the dramatic(戏剧化的) storytelling methods. There are many types of novels.
Adventure: centred around exciting experiences, often involving exploration, danger, and physical action. The focus is usually a journey or quest filled with challenges(挑战) in different settings.
Fantasy: features magical or supernatural elements(元素) not found in the real world. Often, it features creatures and magic powers, and is also often centred around quests or journeys.
Mystery: focuses on crimes or unexplained events, often featuring a detective or someone trying to uncover(揭露) the truth.
Science fiction: commonly called “sci-fi”, this imagines future worlds and features advanced technology, space exploration(探索), time travel, or scientific discoveries.
Other common types of novels include romance, thriller, horror, historical, crime, and children’s.
