It was around 10 o’clock at night and it was raining cats and dogs in our street. Everyone was
at home, watching TV, reading or sleeping. However, my mom and I had to run back home from
shopping to keep us from getting totally wet.
When we arrived home, I asked my mom to make some hot pancakes. It would be great to
have pancakes during heavy rains. Later, we three sat at the table, having a good conversation as
usual while eating delicious pancakes. Suddenly, we heard a noise from somewhere near my
house. We got worried and went outside to see what happened.
We saw a dog, abandoned(遗弃)by someone near the pipe next to our house. I could hardly
see my other puppets as cute as this dog, shaking and fully wet on that cold rainy night. I felt sorry
for the dog and gave my pancakes and some bread to him. He ate it in just a few seconds. Then we
decided to take him home. We gave him good food and a hot shower, and dried him with our own
towel and named it Charlie.
Ever since that lucky rainy night, Charlie has been with us. Every day, he plays games
happily with us and keeps thieves and unexpected guests out of our home. He loves us as much as
we love him. Whenever I have trouble with others, Charlie, my pet dog, will always be there to
support me.
Now he is our family member. When someone asks how many people there are in my family,
I always say there are four, my mom, my dad, me and Charlie. My pet dog is the best gift I have

We humans can express emotions by telling others how we feel. But what about animals
How can we tell whether they experience emotions and, if they do, which ones Over the past 20
years, researchers have made great progress in this field.
It’s very hard for us to know emotions in animals, because they cannot tell us how they feel.
However, when emotional things happen, they cause changes in many different ways.
The most common reaction of an animal to an event is how it changes its behaviour. Humans
often change facial expressions and gestures depending on whether we experience a pleasant event
or not. Animals show different facial expressions as well. For example, changes in the ear position
or the amount of the white of the eyes can show different levels of pain or fear in animals. It is
important to remember that the facial expressions of animals usually look different than those of
humans—joy might not be shown by a smile, while sadness may not be together with tears.
Another example of animal behaviour that is linked to emotions is vocalizations(发声) ,
which can show stress in many animals. We know this is true for humans, too. Imagine you are
singing a song in front of many people, your voice might get shaky if you are nervous.
Researchers have found that the vocalizations of pigs, goats and cows also change and get less
pleasant when these animals are under stress, for example, when they are isolated from the group.
It seems that animals react to their environments much as humans do. So, we can infer that
animals can feel emotions. This might encourage us to rethink the environments in which we keep
the animals that are under our care— on farms, in zoos or in our houses. If we can better
understand how animals react to their environments, we can improve these environments as well
as human-animal relationships.
32. According to paragraph 3, people can learn how animals feel ______.
A. through their voices B. through their expressions
C. through their environment D. through their sign language
33. The underlined phrase “isolated from” is similar to “______” in meaning.
A. cared for by B. attracted by C. far away from D. included in
34. What can we know according to the research
A. Animal emotions are not as rich as human ones.
B. Changes in animals’ expressions are hard to find.
C. Sounds made by animals are a way of expressing feelings.
D. The living environment of animals has little effect on them.
35. Which of the following is the best title of this passage
A. Do Animals Feel as We Do
B. Are Animals Our Best Friends
C. Do Animals Understand the Environment
D. How Can We Improve Human-animal Relationships

Red Nose Day is a famous charity event that helps children in poor areas. It was started in
1988 by a British group called Comic Relief. The event usually happens in March in
odd-numbered year(s 奇数年). So far, it has raised over 60 million to help kids around the world.
In the UK, people celebrate Red Nose Day every two years. They wear red clothes and funny
red noses, which you can buy at supermarkets. Part of the money from selling red noses goes to
charity. People also host “Red Nose Parties” at home. They will sell tickets to their friends.
Friends come dressed in red, and those who forget must pay a small fine. The ticket money and
fines are all donated to help children in need.
Red Nose Day has inspired(激发)other fun charity events worldwide. For example, Sweden

homeless animals. In the US, there’s “Ugly Christmas Sweater Day” every December. Americans
