Life in China’s space station has become more enjoyable with a new kitchen! Astronauts recently used a special oven to cook delicious meals for the first time.
Astronaut Wu Fei prepared chicken wings, placing them in the smart oven. About half an hour later, hot and tasty New Orleans-style chicken wings were ready. He and his partners also baked black pepper steaks. The six astronauts happily shared the homemade food.
This space oven is much better than ovens on Earth. It has special safe designs, such as exact temperature control and a strong air cleaning system. This keeps baking safe and without smoke, which follows the station’s strict air quality rules.
Cooking marks big progress for the astronauts’ life support (支持) system. They now have over 190 different kinds of food to choose from. They can also bake things like cakes and nuts. Researchers keep making space food more delicious and healthier.

The Forerunner of Animation: Shadow Puppet Plays
Shadow puppet plays are a traditional form of storytelling in China, and many people see them as the forerunner of modern animation. The oldest shadow puppet plays in China date back over 1,000 years. In these plays, light and shadows are used to tell stories on a screen, making them one of the earliest forms of moving images. They have had a huge influence on modern film-making and animation.
Shadow puppets were first made of paper, but later people began to use leather, which is why they are called pi ying (leather shadows) in Chinese. Leather puppets last longer, and each puppet is cut into the shape of people, animals or objects, then painted in different colours and put on sticks. Some puppets even have movable arms, legs, fingers or eyes.
To perform a shadow puppet play, puppeteers stand behind a white screen, while the audience sits in front. The screen is lit up, and the puppeteers hold the puppets close to the screen so their shadows can be seen clearly. They move the puppets around and do the voices of different characters. The puppets talk and move just like characters in an animated film, and the audience often holds their breath during exciting moments.
Today, many young people do not often attend shadow puppet plays, but artists like Wang Weifang are trying to save this art form. They add new elements to traditional plays, such as modern dance moves, and even use digital images and new lighting to create special effects. Their work makes the old art form feel new again, and keeps the audience’s eyes fixed on the screen.
18.Why are shadow puppet plays called the “forerunner of animation”
A.Because they use digital technology to make moving images.
B.Because they are the earliest form of moving images and influenced modern animation.
C.Because they were created by the same people who made animated films.
D.Because they use colourful leather puppets that look like cartoon characters.
19.What is one advantage of using leather to make shadow puppets
A.Leather puppets are cheaper to make than paper ones.
B.Leather puppets are easier to cut into different shapes.
C.Leather puppets last for a longer time than paper ones.
D.Leather puppets can move on their own without sticks.
20.How do puppeteers perform shadow puppet plays
A.They sit in front of the screen and move the puppets with their hands.
B.They stand behind the screen, hold puppets close to it, and move them while doing voices.
C.They use computers to project the puppets’ shadows onto the screen.
D.They paint the puppets on the screen and move them with their fingers.
21.What are modern puppeteers doing to save shadow puppet plays
A.They are making all the puppets with paper instead of leather.
B.They are only performing the oldest traditional plays without changes.
C.They are adding new elements like modern dance moves and using digital technology.
D.They are teaching young people to make shadow puppets in schools.

What We Can Do to Protect Animals in Danger
It is not easy for many animal species to survive these days. More and more people are living on the Earth, and human activities are harming the environment. Some people are cruel to animals—they kill them for their fur, tusks or meat. It is wrong of them to do so.
Luckily, more people are learning to care about animals. It is important for us to take action to protect them. Here are some easy things we can do:
First, it is helpful to learn about animals in danger in our area. We can read books or watch videos to know their living habits and problems.
Second, it is wrong to buy products made from endangered animals. We should refuse to use them.
Third, it is right to report illegal hunting to the police. Even small actions can make a big difference.
Fourth, it is necessary to protect the homes of animals. We can plant trees and keep the environment clean.
Finally, it is kind to help injured animals. If we see a hurt bird or a lost cat, we can take it to an animal centre.
It is never too late to help animals. We are old enough to do something for them. Let’s work together to make the world a better place for both humans and animals.
34.What is the main problem for animals in danger according to the passage
A.There are too many animals in the wild.
B.Human activities are harming their living environment.
C.They have no food to eat in the forest.
D.They are not strong enough to fight against humans.
35.Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a way to protect animals
A.Learning about endangered animals.
B.Buying products made from endangered animals.
C.Reporting illegal hunting.
D.Protecting the homes of animals.
36.Why is it wrong of people to kill animals for their fur or tusks
A.Because it is cruel and harms the animal species.
B.Because the fur and tusks are not useful.
C.Because the animals are too strong to kill.
D.Because the police do not care about this.
37.What can we learn from the passage
A.Only adults can help protect animals in danger.
B.Small actions cannot make a difference to animals.
C.It is important for us to take action to protect animals.
D.Animals do not need our help to survive in the wild.
