At the age of 16, I lived with my parents at an institute 18 miles from Durba n with no neighbors around. One day my father needed a ride to town for a conference. I decided then and there that I was never going to lie again. I often think about that episode and wonder, if he had punished me the way we punish our children, whether I would have learned a lesson at all. I don’t think so. I would have suffered the punishment and gone on doing the same thing. But this single action was so powerful that it is still as if it happened yesterday.

Do mosquitoes prefer a certain blood type Maybe—but it’s not just one factor that influences why these winged pests are attracted to us and researchers can’t seem to agree on a definitive answer.
Science reveals that a variety of factors might make you more palatable to mosquitoes, from your skin microbiota (微生物群) and carbon dioxide emitted in your breath to the color of clothing you’re wearing (with colors like red, orange, and black being the most attractive to mosquitoes) . But in the end, much of the variation in mosquito preference comes down to two factors: our natural body odor and genetics.
Only the females bite humans and they do it to get a “blood meal”, deriving proteins from our blood to produce their eggs. To help locate their prey, female mosquitoes use their antennae (触角) and palps, the organs between their antennae, to detect carbon dioxide and odor. That means people who have a high metabolic (代谢) rate and emit more carbon dioxide, including those who are pregnant, working out, or drinking alcohol tend to be more attractive to mosquitoes.
The question of whether mosquitoes prefer a certain blood type is controversial. One theory suggests that blood type may also help determine mosquito preference. If that’s the case, what blood type do mosquitoes like A 2019 study found that the major mosquito vector of dengue virus preferred people with type O blood to those with other blood types.
However, separate research notes that experimental and laboratory data evaluating whether blood type makes one person more (or less) attractive to mosquitoes has fueled a lot of speculation, but the science is contradictory. Instead, the researchers report that the likelihood of being a “mosquito magnet” has more to do with skin odor and microbiota than blood type.

A self- driving taxi operated by a Chinese tech giant recently hit a passer- by crossing against a traffic light in Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province, sparking heated discussions on the challenges and limitations facing autonomous driving technology, especially in complex circumstances.
Zhang Xiang, an auto sector researcher at North China University of Technology, said that the incident in Wuhan indicates that self- driving technology has progressed significantly over the past few years, but it still encounters difficulties under ever- changing road conditions and has some limitations when dealing with unconventional behavior, such as motorists or passers-by violating traffic rules. There are still some obstacles to integrating the self- driving vehicles into the existing road traffic safety management system, as the legal obligations of relevant subjects involving autonomous vehicles have not been clarified under current laws and regulations.
Meanwhile, the commercial application of robotaxis in more cities across the country has raised concerns about employment, as taxi drivers are worried about losing their jobs due to intense competition from driverless ride-hailing vehicles, industry experts said. So far, more than 20 cities nationwide have introduced policies supporting autonomous driving tests, with more than 60 enterprises having obtained self- driving test licenses.
Nevertheless, some believe that people only prefer to experience this emerging technology, and the number of robotaxis on the road is still far smaller than those of taxis. It is also noted that the pressure on taxi drivers mainly comes from fierce competition between private ride-hailing cars and traditional taxis, and that the autonomous driving vehicles will not have a serious impact on the job market or replace human drivers in the short term.
Despite the challenges, the development of self- driving industry will strengthen the intelligent transformation of auto industry and speed the construction of vehicle- road coordination systems, which support the transfer of information from vehicles to roadway networks as a way to improve traffic efficiency.
