What does “the circle of goodwill” mean
Read and say.
The circle of goodwill
You start with goodwill. Then the goodwill is passed on to others. One day, others may give it back to you. This is called the circle of goodwill.
1.Look at the title of the passage and the pictures, predict what the passage is about.Use the words and expressions to help you.
The passage is about an earthquake and the kindness that followed. After the disaster, soldiers, firemen, doctors and nurses reached out to the survivors, racing against time to help. Inspired by their helping hands, the writer became a nurse after graduation and offered help to others. This kindness created a circle of goodwill.
2.Read the passage and check your answer.
1 It was just before 2:30 pm in my hometown, Wenchuan. I was having a music lesson at school, Suddenly, the ground shook hard and I was thrown to the floor. It was an earthquake! People were shouting all around me. I jumped to my feet and rushed outside.I was shocked to find all the other buildings were reduced to pieces. I was shaking all over with fear. Then, a pair of strong hands reached out to me -I was saved.
2 I can never forget those soldiers, firemen, doctors and nurses. Day and night, they raced against time to save as many people as possible.I was deeply touched by their courage and hard work. So I made up my mind to become one of them. And I did! I graduated from college and became a nurse.
3One day, I heard another hospital needed support. Right away, I signed up to help. I still remembered the warmth of those helping hands 12 years ago. It was time for me to offer mine.
4 The work was by no means easy. The head nurse, Ye Man, gave me a lot of help. For me,she was a patient teacher and a kind friend. However, this wasn’t the beginning of our connection. She had offered a helping hand toWenchuan 12 years ago. Can you imagine my surprise At that time she was my age, and also a new nurse, just like me!
5 Even today, I still feel lucky to have had such an amazing experience in life. Love leads to love, and so creates a circle of goodwill and kindness.

1. What does “jumped to my feet” mean
2. Why did the soldiers, firemen, doctors and nurses “race against time”
3. How do you understand “the circle of goodwill”
It means “stood up quickly”.
It was because many people were hurt and might lose their lives. Therefore, the soldiers, firemen, doctors and nurses had to hurry to help as many people as possible.

参考范文
Jack was very poor. One day, he was preparing for a job interview, but his clothes were so old that he was worried about making a good impression. On the bus, he told a stranger, Ben, about his worry. Before Jack got off, Ben offered his tie and jacket to him. “You may need these more than I do,” Ben said. “Good luck!”
Jack was deeply touched. When he put them on, he looked smart and confident. He did very well in the interview and got the job.
Jack wanted to repay Ben, but he couldn’t find him. Years later, after becoming successful, Jack decided to help others. He offered smart clothes to job interviewees in need. His kindness helped many young people.
Jack’s story tells us that a small act of kindness can change someone’s life. If you help others, you may inspire them to help more people in the future.
