Diane Hartman’s travel memoir (回忆录), Getting Lost on My Way, tells the story of a woman who found a spiritual home. A children’s librarian, Hartman first discovered her connection with Ireland through music and books. After a chance meeting with John O’Donohue, an Irish author of a book on Celtic spirituality, she finally decided to make her long-dreamed-of trip to Ireland — the first of four journeys to come.
What makes this memoir refreshing is Hartman’s willingness to hug the unexpected. Driving around the country without phone maps or email, she frequently made mistakes — going the wrong way. Yet these mistakes often led to precious personal encounters with bed-and-breakfast hosts and locals she met along the way. Hartman gradually opened herself to relationships that enriched her travels.
The book is filled with references to Irish music and musicians — Luka Bloom, the Waterboys, and the Saw Doctors — that awoke the country’s cultural landscape. Hartman’s journey includes appearances of a poetry publisher, with most of their talks in mild Irish dialect (方言). Alongside descriptions of green hills and fairy forests, she shares encounters with dogs, sheep and donkeys that add warmth to her memoir.
Through her four trips, Hartman’s connection with Ireland deepened. She found herself outgrowing a relationship back home — a sign of emotional growth. The book addresses heavy topics like depression but maintains a positive and lighthearted tone. One clue follows her love of singer Luka Bloom — showing a willingness to take risks. Her final stay at an Irish writer’s home provides a perfect finale: the shy librarian had become a writer herself.
Getting Lost on My Way celebrates what happens when a traveler challenges herself and goes down unfamiliar paths — both on the road and within. It really deserves a read.
24. What inspired Diane Hartman to make her trip to Ireland
A. Her respect for the Celtics. B. Her desire to start a new life.
C. Her dream of living in Ireland. D. Her encounter with an Irish author.
25. How did Hartman’s mistakes affect her travel experience
A. They forced her to use phone maps. B. They made her reevaluate her choice.
C. They cost her a lot of time and energy. D. They resulted in valuable connections with locals.
26. What can we learn about Hartman from the text
A. She travels to escape problems.
B. She prefers to travel with careful plans.
C. She is reserved but grows more open through traveling.
D. She is outgoing and makes international friends easily.
27. What is the text
A. A short novel. B. A news report.
C. A book review. D. A research paper.

Solar and wind power are key to a low-carbon future, but they come with a fundamental problem: they are unstable. Some days are sunny and windy; others are cloudy and calm. To ensure electricity is always available during periods of low production, energy planners must build more wind turbines (涡轮机) and solar panels than are actually needed on fine weather days.
This creates a strange situation. When the weather is favorable, renewable energy systems generate more electricity than the grid (电网) can handle. To avoid overloading the system, operators are forced to cut down production, wasting perfectly clean energy.
A new study from Carnegie Science and Caltech offers an elegant solution: instead of wasting the excess electricity, why not use it to make hydrogen fuel The process, called electrolysis, uses electricity to split water molecules (分子) into hydrogen gas and oxygen gas. The hydrogen can then be stored and used later to generate electricity, power vehicles or supply industrial processes — all without carbon release.
Researchers Tyler Ruggles and Ken Caldeira developed a computer model incorporating decades of historical weather data to test this concept. Their findings were striking: in modeled low-carbon energy systems, there is almost always enough electricity available to produce hydrogen after meeting grid demand. The study suggests that new basic facilities would not need to be built until hydrogen production accounts for over 20 percent of total energy demand.
The potential impact is substantial. By trapping electricity that would otherwise be wasted, green hydrogen production could lower the average cost of electricity while making better use of renewable resources. The key is keeping the cost of electrolysis equipment low.
“One of the biggest challenges of instituting a low-carbon electricity zone has been effectively integrating variable resources like wind and solar,” Ken Caldeira explained. “Our work demonstrates that production of hydrogen could be a major step toward making better use of wind and solar resources.”
28. What problem does renewable energy face according to paragraph 1
A. High cost. B. Instability. C. Low popularity. D. Poor productivity.
29. What does the underlined word “excess” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Limited. B. Extra. C. Stored. D. Rare.
30. What is Ken Caldeira’s attitude towards the new concept
A. Favorable. B. Dismissive. C. Doubtful. D. Cautious.
31. What can be the best title for the text
A. Green Energy Is Greatly Profitable B. Renewable Resources Have Been Found
C. Renewable Energy Will Replace Electricity D. New Finding Eases Green Energy’s Headache
D
Imagine a place where sunlight never reaches, the water pressure could flatten a car, and the temperature swings from near-freezing to extreme hot within meters. This is the world of hydrothermal openings-leaks in the ocean floor where superheated, mineral-rich water erupts into the freezing deep sea.
For decades, scientists believed nothing could live in such severe conditions. But in 1977, a team aboard the submarine Alvin made a shocking discovery: these seemingly lifeless places were actually filled with creatures. Among them were large mussels (贻贝) unlike any seen before.
These mussels presented a puzzle. How could they survive in total darkness, far from the sunlight that powers almost all life on Earth’s surface Through further study, scientists discover how these mussels team up with bacteria to prosper in one of Earth’s most extreme environments. The answer lies inside their bodies.
Unlike most marine animals that must hunt food from the water, these mussels host billions of bacteria within their gills (鳃). The bacteria perform a process, using chemicals from outlet water currents rather than sunlight to produce food for the mussels. It’s a perfect partnership: the mussels provide a safe home for the bacteria and in return the bacteria feed their hosts.
This mutualistic relationship has allowed the mussels to become “double stars” of the deep sea, successfully occupying not only hydrothermal outlets but also another extreme habitat: cold leaks, where methane (甲烷) gas slowly pops up from the seafloor. Remarkably, scientists have found that about 20 percent of the species living at openings and leaks are shared between these two very different environments.
Today, researchers continue to explore these unique ecosystems using advanced submarines like China’s “Fendouzhe”, which has discovered new deep-sea communities in the Mariana Trench. Each dive reveals more about how life has adapted to Earth’s most extreme places-and what these adaptations might teach us about the possibilities of life elsewhere in the universe.
32. What did scientists think the deep sea was like decades ago
A. Purely dark and lifeless. B. Full of diverse creatures.
C. Similar to ocean surface. D. Rich in mineral resources.
33. What sustains the mussels’ survival
A. Bacteria in their gills. B. Food floating in the water.
C. Extreme water pressure. D. Sunlight beneath the surface.
34. Why does the author mention China’s “Fendouzhe”
A. To compare it with Alvin. B. To introduce a new concept.
C. To show ongoing exploration. D. To praise Chinese technology.
35. What is the main focus of the text
A. Deep-sea exploring technology. B. The discovery of methane leaks.
C. Extreme environments on Earth. D. Life’s adaptation in severe habitats.

Strategies to Help You When You Don’t Feel Heard
Feeling unheard — whether in personal relationships, the workplace, or social settings — can be deeply disheartening. Over time, it may lead to anxiety, frustration, and even emotional withdrawal. While you can’t control whether others truly listen to you, there are healthy ways to respond and reframe the situation. ___36___
Reflect on your communication style. Before assuming others aren’t listening, take a moment to examine how you’re expressing yourself. Are your messages clear and well-timed Intense emotions or unclear statements can sometimes make it harder for others to engage. ___37___ For example, saying “I feel ignored when my ideas aren’t acknowledged” — opens up a conversation more effectively than blaming language.
___38___ Sometimes, the issue isn’t that you’re not important — it’s that the other person is emotionally unavailable, distracted (分心的), or simply lacks active listening skills. Recognizing this doesn’t justify the behavior, but it helps you avoid taking things personally. This awareness helps you avoid personalizing their behavior while maintaining empathy, which is essential for preserving meaningful connections even when they’re occupied.
Set clear, healthy boundaries. If a relationship consistently leaves you feeling dismissed or invisible, it’s time to establish emotional boundaries. Doing so protects your dignity and prevents emotional tiredness. ___39___ Remember that you deserve to be in spaces where your voice matters — being heard is more important than being loud.
Seek validation from within. While it’s natural to seek for external recognition, acknowledging your own thoughts and feelings builds resilience (抗挫力) and reduces dependency on others’ approval. ___40___ This practice helps you recognize your worth regardless of how others respond to you.
A. Understand the other person’s capacity.
B. Using “I” statements instead of “You” to blame.
C. Don’t hesitate to share your honest opinions with others.
D. Here are grounded tips to help you face these challenging times.
E. Below are some effective methods to build relationships with others.
F. Consider seeking out spaces where your voice is genuinely valued and respected.
G. Keeping a journal to process your thoughts helps you stand firm in your own view.

I was driving home late Thursday night after picking up some groceries when my headlights caught something unusual on Oats Road. At first, I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me — a group of dark shapes were moving slowly along the road. As I got closer, I realized with disbelief that they were cows. About fifteen of them, to be exact, were wandering along the road as if they owned the place, their tails moving lazily in the cool night air.
I pulled over and watched as the cows wandered onto the main road, calmly walking in and out of traffic. The cars on the road all slowed down, drivers leaning out of windows with phones raised to record the incredible scene. Some cows stopped to chew on the grass by the roadside, completely uninterrupted by the flashing headlights and the sound of the cars. It was complete chaos, yet strangely peaceful — the cows seemed to be enjoying their midnight meal. More and more cars came to a stop on the road, lining up as far as the eye could see.
Within 10 minutes, police cars arrived, their emergency lights painting the scene in red and blue. Officers stepped out cautiously, unsure how to handle the situation. They used their cars to block traffic to prevent the cows from being hurt by the hurrying drivers accidentally. At the same time, more and more cars were stopped by this. The police officers then tried waving their arms to guide the animals away from the road. But the cows simply ignored them, continuing their slow, enjoyable walk wherever they pleased. The police officers even tried to use some grass along the road to attract the cows away from the road, but it was no use.
Some drivers in a hurry became impatient and a little annoyed while some drivers just slowed down and enjoyed the peaceful and unusual night scene. Of course some drivers wanted to help and posted the pictures on their social media, hoping the cows’ owner may get wind of it and come to help.
Just when it seemed hopeless, the sound of a barking dog cut through the night.

A pickup truck pulled up and a farmer jumped out with two dogs. “Sorry, officers—they’re mine,” he called out, a mixture of embarrassment and relief in his voice. The dogs leaped out, their barking instantly drawing the cows’ attention. Within moments, the well-trained animals began circling the cows, gently leading them back toward the truck. The cows, which had ignored police lights and instructions, now moved under the dogs’ guidance. Officers stood back, watching with amusement as the farmer directed the operation. One cow hesitated near the roadside, but a sharp bark from the nearest dog sent it going back to join the others.
The cows all left the road and the farmer apologized for the trouble. One of the police officers laughed. “At least they had a designated driver,” he joked. Other drivers said it was understandable and left in unusual calm. As the police cars pulled away and traffic returned to normal, I smiled. Tonight, the cows had been the unlikely stars of a midnight drama. And thankfully, everyone, humans and animals alike, returned home safely.
