In the 1990s, being a single father with a different life. path was far from common. There were few people I could look up to, and even fewer I could talk to; I had to find my own way through life’s challenge — raising two children on my own.
Initially, I felt totally at a loss. I didn’t fully understand who. I was, and I wasn’t honest with myself. But when life reached its lowest point, I learned a powerful lesson; Real change begins with self. Only after I truly faced myself did things begin to change.
That honesty wasn’t easy. It took time, mistakes, and difficult choices. I had to adjust. my career to be more present for my kids. Slowly, I began to rebuild — not just as a parent, but as a person willing to live a life that felt true and meaningful.
As I learned to be honest, I also learned to accept who I was. I stopped hiding the weaknesses in my personality and began to face them with bravery. I discovered something important: When you accept yourself, others are more likely to do the same.
Of course, not everyone understands. There were still judgments and misunderstandings. But they didn’t hurt as much as they used to. Honesty and self-acceptance gave me strength. They became my shield, keeping me from negativity.
Now, when people question my story or criticize my book, Out and About Dad, I stay calm. That book isn’t just about my journey — it’s about the power of knowing and accepting yourself. It’s about helping others do the same.
We all face doubts from time to time. What matters most is how we see ourselves. When we begin with self-honesty, acceptance, and courage, we can walk our path with confidence.
24. What did the author do when accepting himself
A. Face his shortcomings bravely. B. Make excuses for his past mistakes.
C. Ask others for understanding. D. Ignore his personality weaknesses.
25. What does the underlined word “shield” mean in paragraph 5
A. A method for attack. B. A desire for confidence.
C. A source of protection. D. A symbol of identity.
26. Why did the author write his book
A. To defend his parenting style. B. To record his personal struggles.
C. To criticize social prejudices. D. To share self-discovery insights.
27. What does the author’s experience show
A. Every cloud has a silver lining. B. Facing yourself honestly builds strength.
C. Knowledge is power. D. Like father, like son.

Suppose you work for a company that values the environment, but you find out that one of its products is harming local water resources and wildlife. This information comes from an internal report not meant to be shared publicly. How likely would you be to speak up, ignore the situation, or take action to fix the problem A recent study explored how people respond to such moral challenges. While some would remain silent, others would take bold steps.
The study used three scenarios (可能发生的情况) involving ethical workplace problems to examine how people said they would act. These scenarios did not measure real behavior but were designed to show what people believe they would do in real life. In addition, the researchers developed eight scales of courage-related personality traits. These included moral courage, physical courage, everyday courage, and self-efficacy in courage — believing one can act courageously when needed.
More than 1,000 adults from around the world took part in the study. Participants answered questions about both their likely actions and their personal traits. The researchers also measured the “Big Five” personality traits: openness, extraversion, agreeableness, emotional stability, and conscientiousness. Risk-taking tendency, or risk propensity, and resilience (快速恢复的能力) were also included as possible predictors of courageous behavior.
Results showed that the same traits predicted both the imagined courageous actions and self-reported traits of courage. People who were open-minded, emotionally stable, outgoing, and resilient were more likely to score high on both types of courage. However, one variable stood out — risk propensity. People who saw themselves as risk-takers scored low on self-reported courage, but high on action-based courage measures.
This finding suggests that while risk-takers may not describe themselves as courageous, they are more likely to act when courage is needed. The authors also point out that courage often benefits others, even when it sometimes involves personal cost. From this view, courage may be part of our evolved drive to help and protect our community. In the end, actions may reveal courage more clearly than words ever could.
28. What does the recent research focus on
A. Courage in action. B. Workplace moral standards.
C. Personality trait measurements. D. Environmental protection strategies.
29. What were the participants asked to do
A. Perform risk-taking tasks. B. Report their emotional states.
C. Evaluate their personality. D. Predict their possible actions.
30. What can be learned about risk takers
A. They perform poorly in resilience tests. B. They need community protection drive.
C. They underestimate their courage. D. They show higher mental stability.
31. What can be inferred about courage in the last paragraph
A. It is acquired after birth. B. It develops at personal costs.
C. It is shown in actual deeds. D. It reflects personality traits.

Insects are disappearing at an alarming rate worldwide, but why Agricultural intensification tops the list of proposed reasons, but there are many other, interconnected drivers that have an impact, according to new research led by Binghamton University, State University of New York.
To understand the scientific community’s views more broadly, the researchers analyzed more than 175 scientific reviews, which included over 500 hypotheses (假设) on different drivers of insect decline. Using this information, they created an interconnected network of 3,000 possible links, including everything from beekeeping to urban sprawl. “The idea was to read them and extract what people say are ‘causal pathways’,” said Christopher Halsch, a post-doctoral researcher at Binghamton and lead author of the paper.
After examining the massive-list of possible links, the researchers found the most cited driver for insect decline to be agricultural intensification, via. issues like land-use change and insecticides (杀虫剂). But it’s more complicated than ranking drivers, as systems are interconnected and impact one another. For example, climate might be a driver for insect decline, but there are individual drivers under the umbrella of climate, like extreme precipitation (降水), fire, and temperature, which themselves can impact other drivers.
Still, many ideas are overlooked. “None of the papers mentioned natural disasters,” said Eliza Grames, Assistant Professor of Biological Sciences, who was part of a recent study showing a 20% loss of butterflies in the U. S. “No papers looked at human disturbance, or the effects of war on insects, or railroads. So there are these big areas that we know in general are threats to biodiversity, but the insect decline literature is really just focused on a few big stressors, as opposed to getting into the more specific ones.”
The researchers identified biases (偏见) in recent literature, most notably those generated from a focus on “charismatic” insects like bees and butterflies. “If we focus too much on bees and butterflies and their conservation, we will miss a lot of other species, most of them in fact,” said Halsch.
32. How was the research carried out
A. By conducting field experiments globally.
B. By surveying public opinions on insects.
C. By tracking insect populations over decades.
D. By analyzing existing scientific reviews.
33. What is the most frequently mentioned cause of insect decline
A. Intense farming. B. Climate change.
C. Natural disaster. D. Urban expansion.
34. What does Grames imply about current insect decline studies
A. They cover potential threats comprehensively.
B. They focus narrowly on limited major factors.
C. They prioritize less significant insects.
D. They emphasize human-related drivers.
35. What attitude does Halsch hold towards the current focus on “charismatic” insects
A. Critical. B. Favorable. C. Tolerant. D. Unclear.

Andrew lived alone with his five children. To make a living, he worked as a pizza delivery man at BBQC Pizza. Thankfully, his elderly neighbor was kind enough to watch the kids while he was away, so he didn’t have to pay for a nanny. Still, the bills were piling up most months.
One day, on his way to deliver pizzas, he spotted smoke rising from a house. The house was on a completely different route from his delivery location, but he couldn’t just turn a blind eye to it. So he turned his motorcycle around and stopped right in front of the home.
Andrew quickly took out his phone and dialed 911 to report the incident. A few people had come out of their houses by then, but no one dared to approach the house because the fire had already reached the front porch.
When Andrew was waiting for the firefighters, he saw a woman in a wheelchair trapped inside the burning house. Andrew knew he was late for his deliveries and would probably be fired, but he had no time to lose. Because he had been trained for the situation before, he went into the burning house, using his jacket to cover himself. “Are you crazy You’ll die!” someone yelled at him, but he didn’t listen. He burst into the house through the front door, and a few moments later, he came out with the older woman.
Thankfully, the firefighters arrived by then and put off the fire. Andrew’s right hand was burned while saving the woman. The doctors treated Andrew’s wound, and while sitting in the ambulance, he checked his phone. He saw dozen of calls from his boss Mr. Morse and several messages lashing (怒斥) out at him for his failed deliveries.
Andrew sighed and he knew there was nothing he could do to save his job at this point. He sent messages to Mr. Morse and his customers, apologizing for the failed deliveries. After that, he turned off his phone and went home.
