Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
(2026 河北开学考试)Growing up, I was one of those energetic kids who never sat still. I was always doing cartwheels, flips, and generally bouncing off the walls whenever I got the chance. At the age of 4, I started in gymnastics and used that as an outlet for my endless energy for several years. I participated in gymnastics until the age of 10, when I had a conversation with my parents that changed the direction of my life forever.
When talking about my early gymnastics career, I failed to mention that I was born with fibular hemimelia (腓侧半肢畸形) — meaning I didn’t have fibulas, ankles, heels, and most of the other bones in my feet. At 18 months old, both of my lower legs were cut off, so I could be fitted with prosthetic (假体的) legs and learn to walk.
Then, as a 10-year-old, my parents sat me down to tell me that at some point I would have to wear prosthetics during gymnastics because I would damage my knees from all of the force I was subjecting them to. I tried gymnastics with my prosthetics and it just didn’t feel right.
At that point, I knew my future wasn’t in gymnastics. But I always felt like I was a mermaid (美人鱼) or a fish when I got into the water, so after moving on from the beam (平衡木) to the pool, I started doing competitive swimming.
Through years of hard training, however, I went from the little girl who wasn’t comfortable doing gymnastics with my prosthetics to a 17- time Paralympic medalist with my eyes squarely set on the next Paralympic Games.
I’m often asked by media or people I come across what advice I have for kids with disabilities or kids that might be going through issues in school. My answer is that it’s important to always be confident, find something you’re really passionate about — whether it’s reading, music, cooking, or sports, and really go for it.

(2026 河南开学考试)There’s an old folk saying: Be careful not to keep an ugly expression on your face, for if the wind changes, your features might set that way, leaving you stuck with that unpleasant look and mood forever. Whoever those “old wives” were, they might have been onto something. It seems that the attitudes we hold and the faces we show to others are closely linked to the kind of person we ultimately become on the inside.
Olga Khazan, a staff writer at The Atlantic, argues that what we perceive as “personality” isn’t fixed or inborn; instead, it’s a mix of habitual behaviors and attitudes. In this sense, personality is subject to reshaping by the will. In Me, But Better, Ms. Khazan describes her attempts to modify elements of her own personality by adjusting the so- called big-five qualities: openness, responsibility, extroversion(外 向), agreeableness and emotional management.
Ms. Khazan’s goal is to transform herself, over the course of one year, from a disagreeable introvert into a sunny, lively extrovert. To fight against overwhelming anxiety, she forces herself to take risks in the free-for-all of improvisational(即兴的) comedy. To overcome a history of being a buzzkill, she sets about throwing parties, writes down funny stories to share, stocks up on board games to keep the mood light, and even practices responding to jokes with genuine laughter instead of a half-hearted smile, determined not to let her usual pessimism dampen the mood. Suffering from the awareness that she has long been an
unreliable friend, she downloads apps that help her meet strangers with whom she might develop a lasting bond. She joins Zoom sessions for anger management. She practices mindfulness. She feeds the homeless.
While exploring “the science and promise of personality change”, as the book’s subtitle has it, the author is humorously open about her sometimes embarrassing efforts to overcome her many shortcomings.
Her straightforwardness has the effect of getting readers on her side. We’re rooting for her and, to be honest, we’re rooting for ourselves, too. If someone overly anxious like Ms. Khazan can become calmer, who among us cannot?

(2026 湖南长沙一模)After writing 50 books, Pakistani American kids’ book author Saadia Faruqi is covering an issue she’s never explored before in her newest title, The Strongest Heart.
“This is the first time I’ve written a book that mainly talks about mental illness and the impacts it has on family life, especially on kids,” says Faruqi. “It’s a topic that’s very close to my heart and the theme is personal to me.”
Published in March, The Strongest Heart follows Mo, a Pakistani American eighth grader, as he struggles to understand his Abbu — “father” in Urdu — who has a very serious mental illness. The book is based on Faruqi’s own rocky relationship with her father, who she believes also had this condition.
Growing up in Karachi, Pakistan, Faruqi says she was afraid of her father’s episodes and often felt confused. The adults never “sat me down and explained anything. Nobody said,‘Hey, don’t be scared.’” She hopes The Strongest Heart, intended for middle schoolers, can offer comfort and strength to young people who live with someone with mental illness at home.
When asked about what she hoped readers would take away from this book, Faruqi said,“I think the title says it all: The Strongest Heart. When things get really bad, somebody tells Mo, ‘The strongest heart is the one that’s still beating.’ I hope that readers take away a message of courage and resilience (坚持不懈). This book is for anybody who faces hardships, who’s not in control of their own life, who’s scared or worried or anxious.”
So far, the book has earned four starred reviews. Kirkus Reviews writes: “The story is engaging, populated with appealing, well- rounded and supporting characters. (2026 广西贵港三模)Do you ever feel as though your parents fail to truly listen to you? When you talk to them, they may give the impression that they’re taking in what you say. 13. This is one challenge you encounter.
As you grow up, you’re becoming more independent and have more questions and opinions. You might start questioning whether your parents truly understand what you’re discussing, which can lead to conflicts.
It’s crucial to respect your parents and grasp why they might hold different
opinions. 14. However, they also need to understand your
perspective and allow you to make your own decisions. After all, in only a few years you’ll probably leave home and have to look after yourself!
Although this situation is common, it remains difficult. Your home should be a place where you can talk openly. Remember, parents are human and can be hurt by your words. Try to remember that in every family there are good times and bad times, but your parents are there for you throughout. Show your appreciation for this, and they’ll see you’re not trying to cause trouble. 15.
Be sensitive! If you need to talk, don’t do it before your parents go to work or bed. Consider your words carefully, keep calm and be open and honest. Don’t compare them to your friends’ parents.
16. Understanding that many other teens face the same issue helps best in handling your feelings.
  17. Remember, there’s no reason why people should automatically understand all your views. The more you engage in conversations with your parents, the better you’ll feel. If you find it difficult to speak with them, seek out another family member, teacher, or the one who can offer support. Stay optimistic, and remember that soon you’ll be making your own choice.
A. It won’t help and could make things worse.
B. In fact they’re often not actually doing so at all.
C. Obviously, it’s important to respect your parents.
D. Keep talking and don’t take yourself too seriously.
E. But that doesn’t mean they’re right on this occasion.
F. Then you’ll beam their trust, and they might become more tolerant.
G. Their priority is to provide you with a secure and structured environment.
