(2026 江西开学考试)Positioned high above New York’s fish- filled Hudson River, the Bear Mountain Bridge, a 2,255-foot suspension bridge roughly 50 miles north of Manhattan, offers an appealing nesting ground for ospreys, which are masters at flying down into bodies of water to catch fish. The large birds have nests atop the bridge tower. However, this is not their first time on this scenic spot.
“Two years ago at the bridge, the large birds started building nests on top of the tower,” says Craig Gardner, manager of maintenance for the New York State Bridge Authority. “We had to go up to try to encourage them to go someplace else. But last year, before we could get the nests, they laid eggs.”
While the nesting birds are a good indicator of the ecological recovery of the Hudson, the nests can pose some risks to approximately 20,000 vehicles per day which cross the Bear Mountain Bridge. The nest itself is about 250 feet above the roadway, so if a stick, a branch, or even a fish falls out of it, cars and people below are at risk.
The New York State Bridge Authority, which operates and maintains five bridges along the Mid-Hudson River Valley, typically tries to encourage the birds to nest on the lower spots, closer to the river and away from cars. But these birds appear to be seeking out the top spots with impressive views.
The solution: a human-built steel nesting box made especially for the ospreys. Instead of dismantling the nests, workers installed (安 装) a steel box so that the birds could have a safer place to build nests.
The box is similar to a basket with the mesh (细网) inside.
“The birds went back there as soon as we left, rearranging the sticks and establishing their nests,” says Gardner.

(2026 福建福州开学考试)We just got back from a week-long trip through New Mexico where we traveled through desert landscapes, hiked up mountains, and walked through dry creek beds. We experienced nature and wildlife that were vastly distinct from what I’ve seen before.
We’ve lived in Atlanta for 25 years so it was quite a change from our “city in a forest”. My husband and I were joined by our adult son who now lives in San Diego and is a little more familiar with the west. We like to visit national parks and explore interesting ecosystems.
In New Mexico, everything seemed striking and amazing. Starting in Albuquerque, we took a tram up the Sandia Peak in the Sandia Mountains, where we had fantastic views as we watched parasailers float off into the unending sky. We then drove to Abiquiu, the town where artist Georgia O’Keeffe was so inspired. We stayed at a lovely home pretty much in the middle of nowhere. First, we noticed the breathtaking setting. Then we noticed the ants: billions of tiny ants were marching all over the outside of the property. They were carrying off a few of the native bees that had fallen to the ground near the house.
Once we were awakened in the middle of the night by howling that was both strange and musical. We were told about the coyotes (郊狼) that share the area, so we weren’t surprised when we woke up the next morning to some pretty impressive paw prints right outside the back door. On our final morning hike before heading south in the state, we even spotted a large snake curled up on the path, enjoying the warm morning sun. We stayed far out of its way but certainly watched our steps a little more carefully.
We talked about sustainability throughout the trip. In the past several decades, there’s been so much noticeable change in our travel adventures. That will be great to keep the skies cleaner and save energy. And the coyotes and snakes can be left to dance and enjoy in peace.

(2026 山东日照开学考试)What is your ideal garden? Perhaps you’re thinking of beautiful flowers, inviting paths and insects eating the plants. While it sounds odd, insects are integral to holistic gardening, a gardening method that uses native plants to better our local ecosystems.
“As we think about garden design, we often start with the color palette, the amount of sunlight and the soil conditions,” says Mark Konlock, Director of Horticulture at Green Bay Botanical Gardens.
“The holistic approach takes those concepts and adds another layer to provide value for insects and other parts of the ecosystem.” This begins with choosing plants that have evolved in your local conditions.
“With natives, you’re able to reduce the amount of upkeep and have plants that stand extreme conditions, like drought or wet soils,” he explains. “Once those plants are established, you don’t have to water them, fertilize them or use pesticides.” Looking at the big picture, those benefits overflow into the environment. An example is plants that like wet soil; they can be added to a rain garden to filter (过 滤) the groundwater and reduce runoff. And when you don’t use pesticides in the garden, you can focus on letting insects grow.
Of course, tolerating all kinds of insects takes some effort. “We’re used to avoiding insect damage in our gardens, so it takes a bit of retraining our minds to help us see the value of letting those insects eat the plants,” Mark says. Chewing insects serve as prey for other members of the ecosystem, such as birds, and in many species, those that survive the larval stage develop into pollinators (授粉者) that we like to see. As pollinators continue losing habitat, it becomes more vital to assist them, as they’re responsible for one-third of our food supply.

Ⅱ.阅读七选五
(2026 福建模拟)While volunteering at a Bolivian animal reserve, I saw all kinds of monkey bites and scratches. It was common for backpackers to show off their fresh wounds at the end of each day. 13.
One morning, those volunteers with the appropriate big-animal training didn’t wake up for some reason. I happened to be there. 14. After an hour of hard walk through the jungle, one of the team members and I reached the lion’s area. The huge cat growled (咆 哮) at me with a distinct sense of dislike. But that didn’t stop us from continuing our task. We entered the caged area, attached two ropes to the lion’s “collar” and begun to walk him through the jungle.
  15. After only a couple of minutes, he stopped, looked back at me and growled directly into my eyes. I watched helplessly as he jumped 10 feet into the air toward me. In a second, his powerful legs wrapped around my waist and sharp teeth pressed into my forehead.
I heard my team member scream. But I couldn’t move.
16. The scream faded as I began to lose consciousness. Then, all of a sudden, I was released. The animal let me go and stepped backwards.
My team member yelled “stick your palm out toward him”. For some reason, I did. The huge cat stepped back toward me and licked (舔) it. And, that was it. He knew that I knew who was king of the jungle. 17.
A. After that we were friends.
B. But no one had a story like this.
C. But be sure you don’t risk it like I did.
D. So, I agreed to help out with the lion.
E. Completely still, I assumed the worst.
F. The lion, completely unpleased with me, stepped forward unwillingly.
G. Volunteering with animals is a great way to give back while you eco -travel.
