(2026 湖北宜昌模拟)After graduating from high school, Amelia Earhart spent a vacation in Toronto, Canada, where she spotted wounded soldiers returning from World War Ⅰ. Then, she volunteered as a nurse’s aide, coming to know many wounded pilots. She developed a strong admiration for aviators, spending much of her free time watching the Royal Flying Corps practicing at the airfield nearby.
At a Long Beach air show, Earhart took a plane ride that transformed her life. It was only 10 minutes, but when she landed she knew she had to learn to fly. Working at a variety of jobs, from photographer to truck driver, she earned enough money to take flying lessons. She read everything she could find on flying and spent much of her time at the airfield. She cropped her hair short, in the style of other women aviators. Worried about what the other more experienced pilots might think of her, she even slept in her new leather jacket for three nights to give it a more “worn” look.
Soon, she rose her fame and became the 16th woman to be issued a pilot’s license by The Federation Aeronautique. One day, Earhart received a phone call, asking her, “Would you like to fly the Atlantic?” In a heartbeat, she said yes. She was selected to be the first woman on a transatlantic flight as a passenger.
On 17 June 1928, Earhart took off from Trepassey Harbor in a Fokker named Friendship. Accompanying her on the flight were three other male pilots. Approximately 20 hours and 40 minutes later, they
touched down safely. Earhart later confessed that she felt she “was just baggage, like a sack of potatoes”. Then she added, “Maybe someday I’ll try it alone.”

(2026 湖南湘潭模拟)Colin Wagener, South Australia’s most senior World War Ⅱ veteran (老兵), recently celebrated his incredible 107th birthday, yet he feels as if he hadn’t aged a day past 90.Living on his 24-hectare property in Adelaide Hills, Wagener stays active, riding his motorbike and chopping wood with an electric saw. “All I am doing is slowing down,” he said, recalling an X-ray that revealed his bones to be younger than his age.
Born during World War Ⅰ, Wagener has seen the Great Depression, 25 different prime ministers, and lots of changes in technology. He remembers the day he returned from WWⅡ on Christmas morning in 1945 as one of his most special memories. “After six years at war, I will never forget it ...it was the best Christmas ever,” he shared.
A cherished childhood memory was receiving a motorbike for his 16th birthday, which he rode to school once, impressing his classmates but not the headmaster who was stuck in the horse and buggy days. At 17, he made a car that looked like an MG, fueling a lifelong passion for cars that took him around the world to compete in races.
Wagener is also proud of opening Adelaide’s first motel in 1962, the Princes Highway Motel on Glen Osmond Rd, before many other roadside hotels were built. His quick humor and friendliness have made him popular with customers at Essence Cafe, who sang “happy birthday” and gave him flowers during his interview.
South Australia’s Minister for Veterans Affairs Joe Szakacs planned to visit Wagener to wish him happy birthday in person, saying, “His life is a testament to resilience, hard work, and a love of adventure that continues to inspire those around him.”
Mr Wagener’s life is full of rich experiences, from making his first car to running a motel, and his dedication to his country and community has left an indelible mark on South Australia. His 107th birthday celebrations showed a well-lived life, full of adventure, love, and a strong desire to keep going.

But their laughter froze when they heard the Gestapo pounding on Sendler’s door. Knowing she was minutes from arrest, she threw Janina her most dangerous possession: a glass bottle containing the names of over 2,000 Jewish children she had brought to safety secretly.
This arrest wasn’t the first scenes Sendler had faced in her lifelong struggles. She grew up in a town with many Jewish people, where her father treated poor Jewish patients whom other doctors refused to help. Sendler was angry at the constant discrimination against her Jewish friends.
In 1940, Hitler announced that Jews in Warsaw were to be forced into just over one square mile of land. Bordered by high walls and subject to constant monitoring, families living in the Warsaw Ghetto (犹太区) quickly became starving and sick. Sendler and her
colleagues secured the passes to the ghetto by reason of checking for disease outbreaks. Moved by the scenes where desperate parents struggled to send their children out of the ghetto, Sendler and her associates developed an organized campaign of rescue missions. Children were hidden in dirty clothes, packed into boxes on trains, and carried beneath the Gestapo’s noses in toolboxes and briefcases. To keep track of every child, Sendler kept painstaking records on thin cigarette paper and stored them in glass bottles.
At 3 am on 20 October, the Gestapo burst into Sendler’s apartment and arrested her. Despite months of physical and mental sufferings, Sendler disclosed no information. She was sentenced to death on 20 January 1944, but, fortunately, was rescued by her associates as she walked to her death.
After the war, Sendler reconnected with the children she’d helped escape. Despite all the lives she saved, Sendler remained hesitant to accept praise for her actions, remarking, “I continue to feel uneasy in my conscience (良心) because I did so little.”
