(2026 湖北恩施开学考试)People have made huge changes to South Florida’s landscape over the last 100 years. Those changes made life easier for farmers and helped people build cities and towns, as well as roads connecting them. That was progress for people.
But the changes influenced how water flows through the Everglades. As a result, the vast wetlands that once covered about 4, 000 square miles of South Florida have been greatly reduced. Habitats in
the Everglades changed, which put stresses on the plants and animals there, thus changing the whole ecosystem. What’s worse, climate changes — more severe weather and rising sea levels add to the problems.
The Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) aims to fix some of the problems about water flow through South Florida. The plan will allow for longer periods during which fresh water can slowly flow over the landscape. It will also create shorter periods when the wetlands dry, which is win-win for everyone. The plants and animals have a better chance of survival.
But the plan won’t put everything back the way it was. “We’re never going to turn back the clock 100 years. That is definitely impossible because many people living in South Florida have changed the landscape. But what we’re looking to do is restore natural patterns of water flow over the Everglades and preserve the ecosystem,” Yvette Cano at Everglades National Park said.
All of the individual projects are important. It takes time to realize these types of large-scale efforts. It is not something that’s going to happen overnight. But all of the components will work together to result in a healthier ecosystem and show the next generation the value of restoring and sustaining the Everglades.

(2025 河北衡水二模)Big changes can come in tiny details. A publisher has discovered that changing the design and font (字体) in books saves millions of pages and thousands of trees. The design team at Harper Collins examined how they could make their books environmentally friendly while preserving readability.
It all started in 2015 when Zondervan, their division, explored ways to save pages when printing a classic book. The classic is a huge book, consisting of 2,500 pages. To save pages, the division developed a new typeface called NIV Comfort Print that is compact (紧 凑) and comfortable to read. The use of Zondervan’s compact font reduced the classic’s length by 350 pages and saved 100 million pages of paper. If these pages were stacked up (堆积), this would be the size of four Empire State Buildings.
Harper Collins wanted to apply this solution to their fiction and non- fiction books. After they asked designers to come up with ideas, the designers created 50 versions of a 600-page book by using easy-to- read fonts and redesigned pages where there was less white space.
During these tests, they focused on fonts that were more compact, coming up with a list of 15 preferred eco-friendly fonts. They also considered white space on the page and created clever designs to make the books more compact without readers even perceiving the difference.
Designers also considered the heaviness of the font so the ink would not bleed through the page.
Their new designs save ink, paper, printing costs, and trees while preserving the reader’s positive experience. “It was simply a different approach. Now, our designers are constantly questioning how we do things and thinking about ways to make things more sustainable,” says Tracey Menzies, who works at Harper Collins.
Questioning how we do things to make them more sustainable applies to all, especially those who work at an office with a printer. Be it at home, at school or at work, sustainable solutions can go a long way. And one need not be a publisher to adopt these changes.
