(2026 安徽芜湖模拟)While Sharfuz Shifat was working at the Meliora LaunchPad in his sophomore year, he had the vision of making an efficient social media network for people to work on their ideas.“The world would be a better place if you could easily find people who have the same interests, vision and complementary (互补的) skills to build something,” he said.
He then reached out to Carolyn Zelicof, Andrew Nyaisonga and Sandesh Paudel. With their team assembled (聚集), the four co- founders were now ready to realize their vision. They developed CrossRoads Create, a social media app, which aims to provide a stage to assemble teams for projects. The app currently has a landing page where you can sign up to become a first user and provide feedback on the product.Site visitors are met with the logo and the motto: “Where ideas meet action.”
Minimizing cost was one of the main challenges of the development process. The two engineers, Nyaisonga and Paudel, were able to develop the platform without overhead costs (间接成本) while keeping large-use in mind.Nyaisonga explained: “There is an easier way to do something, but it might not be cheap. So, we had to choose the harder way for some things.”
Juggling schoolwork, job applications, and the app development was another thrown their way.“But when you’re really passionate about it, you can do it.Not everyone has to drop out of college to build a startup.” Shifat said.
curveball
Wanting to make the platform as accessible to users as possible, the team decided that the platform would be free to use.CrossRoads Create will be launched soon, and the founders have been busy preparing their launch strategy, promoting their product through heavy use of social media marketing campaigns, maintaining their landing page.“We are all much invested in this idea, and we are all really excited to see where this goes,” Zelicof said.

(2026 湖南永州一模)If the shark emoji on your phone is structurally correct, thank Emily Simpson. As a “content strategist”, she made it her mission to ensure that emoji, the universal lingo of our digital age, shows marine life as nature intended.
Simpson has pushed for key emoji redesigns: Apple redesigned the squid (鱿鱼) emoji, removing a tube that was oddly placed in the face and the oyster (牡蛎) emoji, relocating its pearl. She’s the reason the tail on Google’s fierce shark has a big upper lobe (叶), not the two even lobes of its original design. The two eyes on Google’s octopus (章 鱼) are right where they belong — not in the center of its face, as initially shown, but on either side of its head.
“Emojis can open up a whole world of conversations with people who might not live next to the ocean. An emoji is a great way that people can share our culture and our values through these tiny, little, silly pictures on our phones.” said Simpson.Since emojis first appeared in the 1990s, Tech companies have been constantly seeking new and improved characters. But before a proposed code can be included into an operating system, it must be approved by the emoji master, the Unicode Consortium, but it doesn’t govern accuracy. That falls to volunteers like Simpson.
Her official job is to develop and direct creative concepts for the aquarium (水族馆) on Monterey’s Cannery Row.She describes herself as “a judge of Internet culture”.Her efforts are not all victorious, though.Simpson urged herself to relax its pufferfish, but her advice was disregarded.Expanded and pointed, “the poor creature remains stressed out!” she said.Similarly, the octopus on all platforms is missing several arms.
“Our team really enjoyed cooperating with the Monterey Bay Aquarium on marine emoji. When designing emojis, realness is key.” said Jennifer Daniel, the creative director for Google’s Android emoji.Simpson is proud that a lobster, crab, shrimp and oyster now stay in the “Animals & Nature” category, not classified as “Food”.“It helps to build empathy,” she said, “if they’re not just something tasty on our dinner plate.”
