(2026 福建漳州二模)My teenage daughter signed up to run a 5K that Saturday morning, and I planned to return to bed after dropping her off.I quickly grabbed some clothes and rushed out of the door with her. When we arrived and I saw the crowd, a thought crossed my mind — I might miss her first event. And past experiences implied that this likelihood was fairly high. There was a strange pull to join her somehow, even though I knew it was unlikely.
I hadn’t been physically active recently and was not dressed for a race.Anyhow, I pretended there had been friends’ encouragement.I found myself registering for the race, telling myself I would just walk it.I tied my sweatshirt around my waist and stuffed my keys in my pocket. When the gun went off, I ran along with everyone else.
I quickly dropped back, and soon became dead last, which made me upset. The crowd vanished (消失) over a hill, and I lost sight of my daughter.Only one other woman remained, who looked about 20 years older than me.We began a series of running and walking. When
she ran again, I couldn’t let her pass me, so I ran too.I managed to pass her, giving me a ray of delight, and later I passed a group of women.
I continued to switch between running and walking until I passed one of my daughter’s classmates, and then another. The course wound through Amish country and Amish children lined the route, watching us.I doubted whether I could make it up the last hill, but I kept picking goals, such as a telephone pole or a mailbox, to run or walk to.I even figured out that if I made my step distance long when I walked, I would cover more ground.
I finally crossed the finish line to find my daughter waiting for me.My face burned red, and my legs hurt, but I was proud of both of us as we posed for a selfie (自拍) wearing our numbers.

(2026 湖北黄冈三模)Signing your kids up for soccer in the fall and lacrosse in the spring may do more for them than build social skills or turn them into athletes.A study by researchers at Michigan State University shows that playing sports can also lead to improved academic performance, particularly for college students.
The study found that playing sports in college improved the grade point averages (GPA) of students and increased the likelihood for them to return for another term.
The researchers did research on almost 1,800 freshmen at MSU.
The students who played sports averaged a 3.25 GPA at the end of their first year, compared to a 3.07 GPA for freshmen who didn’t play sports.
The findings also showed that playing sports was linked to lower odds of students dropping or failing classes their first year.In fact, those who played sports were 40% more likely to return for their sophomore year, and 2.5 times more likely to come back to the university overall.
“At the end of the year, students who played sports dropped or failed a total average of six credits compared to 7.7 credits among non- playing students,” says lead author Kerri Vasold in a university release. The nearly-two credit difference per year for those who play sports has a large effect on the time it takes to graduate.
As for the ideal number of sports and extracurricular activities that seemed to be most beneficial, researchers say the “sweet spot” ranges from four to seven activities over a school year.
“Don’t go crazy.Don’t join 20 teams,” says co-author Jim Pivarnik.“Grab some friends, find a moderate number of activities and get involved in something different. The four-to-seven range seems to be effective and is linked to a higher GPA. ”
Adds Vasold: “There are so many different ways to participate.
And the best part is you don’t have to be an all-star basketball player. You can still join a team. It’s an inclusive environment and helps students do better and creates a new home.”

(2026 湖南常德模拟) A new study gives all of us some extra motivation when it comes to getting outside and exercising: every day you manage to fit in an additional one-hour walk, you could be boosting your lifespan by an extra six hours. That’s the approximate benefit if you’re currently in the 25 percent least active people in the US, according to fitness tracker data analyzed by a team led by researchers from Griffith University in Australia.
If you’re in the top 25 percent, an extra walk isn’t as much of a boost — you’ve already received most of the health benefits from exercise — but the study also highlights and quantifies some of the key benefits of an active life.“If all individuals were as active as the top 25 percent of the population, Americans over the age of 40 could live an extra 5.3 years on average,” write the researchers in their published paper.“It can be any type of exercise to reach that top quartile (四分位 数) but would roughly be the equivalent of just about three hours of walking per day.”
The team analyzed wearable activity data from the National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES) in the US, which recruits 5,000 volunteers a year.To calculate how changes in activity levels can influence mortality (死亡) risk, researchers referenced the NHANES results against a life-table model (where mortality rates are tracked at specific age points) and previous research into exercise and lifespan. In this particular study, data on 824 participants were excluded because they didn’t wear the trackers for long enough.
Suggesting that exercise leads to a longer life is nothing new, but quantifying and simplifying the benefits can grab attention — whether it’s five minutes a day to reduce blood pressure or nine seconds a week to grow muscle. Now there’s a new target to aim for: an extra hour’s walk a day.If you find that too discouraging a prospect, remember that any amount of exercise makes a difference to health and well-being.

(2026 广东广州模拟)Have you ever thought that taking short breaks during a walk could actually help you burn more calories?
Scientists have discovered that short bursts of activity can burn more energy than continuous exercise. For example, several groups of quick walks or stair climbs for just 10 to 30 seconds use 20% to 60% more energy than walking nonstop for the same distance.13. Similar to a car using more fuel when starting a journey, our body works harder at the beginning of any movement. This is because it needs to warm up our muscles and get into a rhythm. These short bursts of activity might not last long, but they require a lot of energy.
  14. As someone who sits most of the day, I used to think exercise meant hours at the gym.But when I tried replacing my afternoon coffee breaks with three 90-second stair climbs, something surprising happened.15. My body adjusted to the activity, and what once felt like a struggle gradually turned into a manageable routine. As this happened, I unexpectedly felt more focused and energized throughout the day. These “exercise snacks” fit well into my busy schedule, proving that working out doesn’t require large blocks of time.
  16. Every stair climb or short walk wakes up the body.Health isn’t built in a day at the gym — it’s made through small, consistent actions.Simply replace one of your usual sitting breaks with just a single minute of walking, and you’ll be amazed at how small actions can reshape your physical vitality.17.
A. Now I see fitness differently.
B. Every step counts, no matter how short it is!
C. This finding matches perfectly with my own experience.
D. This happens because the body needs extra energy to start moving.
E. Actually, short exercise breaks can increase your energy consumption.
F. At first, even 20 seconds left me breathless, but over time, it became easier.
G. The more time and effort you put into exercise, the more calories you will burn.
